Riot at Olympiadorf during demolition party

Burning down the house

The Demolition Party meant as a fond farewell to the Olympiadorf originally erected for participants of the 1972 Olympics turned into a riot on Saturday when drunken gate-crashers began tearing doors off the deserted bungalows and breaking windows, finally setting fire to two of them.

It started out as an intimate meeting of former dwellers, twenty crates of beer, sixteen beer tables, tranquility - until shortly after 10pm. Then more guests arrived, probably alerted via a grapevine snowball system, some bringing their own beer, most already drunk.

The two security guards and the students responsible for the party tried to de-escalate the situation but had to call in the police. By the time they arrived, the first bungalow was in flames. The policemen were able to extinguish the fire, but another one started, reinforcements were called in. 2000 guests were evacuated by the 150 officers, a helicopter lit the scene with its floodlight.

No one attacked the police and firefighters although 180 “aggressive and uncooperative“ persons were ID-ed. Six people were taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries sustained in fistfights. By 3am order had been restored, the scene of the conflagration was fenced in on Sunday, cleaners began their daunting task.

Some of the bungalows still in use were damaged as well. “Those guys were no students, says one of the organizers. “It was a mob. The students themselves are too fond of their village to destroy it. “Maybe Destruction Party was the wrong motto, he adds.

i know some people who alledgedly may have possibly been there. not students...

I was there. It was a little boring and reminded me of everything I hated about university: music I hated, bad sound systems, the race to get drunk (although they did have a foam party which I never had at uni). So I left. Now I wish I'd stayed since it sounds like things got lots more exciting.

Are they tearing down all apartments out there? Including the one where the 1972 Munich Massacre took place?
MonksTown
OK, they mostly went to relatively privledged students, but why are they destroying even more of Munichs low cost housing stock?

@ jamie: No, these are the bungalows snuggled at the foot of the high-risers and the rows of lower houses. Connollystrasse won't be touched. A friend of mine lived there for a while, people would ring the bell and ask if they could tour the apartment. One woman said that it was very comforting to see children playing at the site of the atrocities, it gave her hope for the future.
EDIT: @ MonksTown - They will be rebuilt, more modern, a bit smaller but 1000-odd instead of 800-ish.

I read that the reason they are being demolished is that it would cost too much to renovate them. I guess that means the renovation would cost more than building new ones.

Like GreenTea just said. It is just too expensive to renovate them. They are in a very deplorable state. Have you ever been inside one of those lately? They have to move everybody out once ever two years to kill the bugs!! They will continue to be dorms for students, but with better conditions. I think apart from the barbaric behaviour from last night, it all is a good innitiative.
By 2009 the new student housing project should be ready.
