Damn... hunting butt is not even in the Urban Dictionary. But harpoon is... this gives a whole new set of possibilities. But, then why need to borrow a harpoon?

I have been speaking German all my life and my mother used to say some off the wall things, but I have NEVER heard this expression before. I'm flummoxed.

Maybe he means cigarette butts, in that case it'd be "Gibt mir die Harpunen, wir gehen auf Kippenjagd". Replace the Kippen with rump and Bob's yer Blubberhumper.

The first thought I had when reading the OP was: Someone´s trying to make up a fake german saying for some kind of comedy.
I imagined some actor wearing "Lederhosen" saying the german version with a fake german accent and an english subtitle explaining it as "...harpoons...butts".
Maybe I shouldnt watch movies like "American Pie" or "Beerfest".

Is there a German word for some kind of protective cover for your harpoon, so it doesn't get too badly damaged during whaling?

There would be a german word for a protective cover, where you put your weapon, when you are not using it. But I wouldnt bring that up. Because of it´s connotation it would make everything even more confusing.

I still think we need Neitz to explain the usage of this arcane phrase. Then we can find the optimal translation. ???
