I know this is going to make me look a dumb ass, but here goes...
Me and my best mate want to come over to this years
Oktoberfest to join in all the Bavarian frivoloties - seen it small scale, now we want to see it big time. Only problem is... wait for it... he doesn't drink beer !!!
Him - "Are there other drinks available?"
Me - "There's wine"
Him - "I don't like wine either. What about Smirnoff Ice or Schnapps?"
To which I have no answer having never been before. Please tell me there are alternatives cos I'm really looking forward to a weekend of lots of beer and more sausages than an open day at Walls.
Or should I just get new friends?

In most tents he can drink water, Apfelschorle (apple drink) or possibly Spezi (kind of a cola/orange mixture). Some also do non-alcoholic beers. You'll not get any spirits in any of the tents. Drink beer in all, wine/sekt in a couple or drink soft drinks. That's pretty much the height of it. He could risk bringing a bottle of something or other in with him but if he gets busted then he'll be out on his ear. Bags are often checked on the way in and security keep a watchful eye all over the place. They'll be the scary looking blokes in leather gloves and 18 hole Doc Martins.
But you really should get some new friends

I would suggest he get dunk in advance of you getting there.
Once he's already drunk then it's so much easier to convince him to try a beer when he's there.

Take the easy route sister -- DUMP HIM.
No wait, do the next best thing first-- train him to be a beer drinker. I would give him only one chance and only one mass of beer at any beergarden to convert. If he still wouldn't bend, then Dump him.
Just kidding. Like others mentioned, there is wasser, spezi, schorle etc to drink but the only things iI care for is golden nectar and chicken.

The only problem with ordering non-alcoholic drinks in the tents (apart from the obvious one) is that waitresses tend not to want to bring them because it spoils their rhythm as they ferry 20 mass at a time from taps to tables. A big tip the first time before it gets really hectic might help. Or just drink beer. That's what it's about after all.

Tell him to drop an E before you go to the fest.
My 2 pence like.

yeah good idea! He'll sweat his ass off and die from heat exhaustion in a tent.

Correct, thanks for that!
Anyone taking an E before going to the Wies'n would have to think about the temperature and drink a LOT of mineral water!
Have fun but play safe is a good motto!

Okay. He's coming to a beer fest but doesn't want to drink beer. But he does drink, so therefore it's just a personal taste issue, not a alcohol issue. I'd say let him deal with the service himself to try and get something else. No Smirnoff Ices or fruity cocktails will be available.
Keydeck, hate to say it, but you're wrong, you can get spirits in some of the tents. But you can't get it at the tables, you have to go to a small, inconspicuous window, often located near the toilets and get a short there. However, it's not much fun to try and spend your entire Wies'n visit there and is better for a "one more for the road/ditch" on your way out.

WHAT, WRONG!!! Es kann nicht sein!!!
That's it, I'm hanging up my Munich hat and heading off to another country to live. Oh no wait, I did that already.

I don't drink at all when at home, though I intend to have at least one or two beers during Oktoberfest, but I'd like to know what other drinks can be purchased in the tents, non alcoholic as I'm not a fan of wine.
Is apfelsaftschorle common? coke? still mineral water anything like that?

Is anybody else scared by the idea of living through an evening at the wiesn
sober?

PS When I read
alternatives to beer I was of course thinking of other recreational drugs. Don't think anything but alcohol will do the trick. It's a big fat sacrifical offering to the god of boozers, you wouldn't want to offend, would you?
PS 2 Should you go, and have a good time on water or soft drinks, tell me how you did it!

LMAO as a non drinker I've spent many an office party/night out completely sober, it means that I can remember absolutely everything that everyone else does, good blackmail material

Reality is an illusion, caused by lack of alcohol.
Ive done every oktoberfest sober. Sure I'll have a sip here and there but never even been tipsy. Its in a word, hilarious. Dont bother ordering water, they'll never bring it to you. Stick with the apfelschorle or the spezis. The bad part about the spezis is that they can give you a caffeine hangover, depending on how long you're at the fest and how many you drink. My first ofest I was awake for freaking ever since I was hopped up on cola
ps: also if your NOT drinking alcohol, be a big tipper. They make most of their money from drunken tourists so a sober penny pincher is not likely to get much in the way of service.

I must admit i've always been nonplussed and confused by people who actually make the effort to travel all the way to Munich to attend a BEER fest and remain teetotal
If you already live here then fair enough, enjoy the fair or the atmosphere or even the ridiculous antics of your fellow attendees but to make the special effort to get here and then abstain ?

Travelling all the way to Munich to attend Oktoberfest and not drink also strikes me as silly, but to each their own. Another drink you can get in some, not all, tents is alcohol free beer. Then you at least get the big glass filled with liquid of the right colour, so you can play the part quite well. I'm afraid I don't know which tents carry a "bleifrei" version though.

I don't drink beer at Oktoberfest either and it's still fun to go. I believe there's some kind of wine tent if you don't want to drink beer.

I have been invited to said O'fest, I do feel obliged to go, but on the otherhand I hate the event and am avoiding alcohol. What can one do if one doesnt want beer.. Is there anything to drink or do I just sit around like a lemon???

Spezi and water are, I think, served in most tents.
