Gifts to take back home from Saxony - Germany

Ideas on what to buy for friends and family
astor
My 3 month stint is about up, and I have some gifts to get for family and friends back home...for some of the gifts, I'd like to bring back things that are truly "Sächsisch".

Any ideas? I know some of you have been here for a while, and maybe have brought gifts back home.

Also for Saxon Wine, where is a good place to get it? I know it's not widely known...

Thanks!
Deccie
Go and do a tour of SCHLOSS WACKERBARTH in Radebeul, it is a great half day out. You can also just go there and buy wine in the shop or online too.

Otherwise just go to Karstadt, there are plenty of local wines there.

The last time I went back home, I took back some wine and a huge array of chocolates. In my opinion, the chocolate in Germany is much much better than the chocolate you normally get in Canada... Of course you can get some good imported chocolates in Canada. Other than that, I really have no clue what you can get here that you can't get in North America.

in the wine place in radebeul the have a very nice rose champane. I think that is nice but the baccus and riesling are nice too

The Vicar's top tip...Erzgebirge - Wooden figures. My family really liked the smoking figures. Or erm,...

I'll always used to pull off the logos of discarded Trabants. They made excellent souvenirs.

From the GDR museum I got a check point charly sign which went down extremely well as a present. I also put one sign on the inside of my garden gate.

Buy on-line here.

Räuchermännchen are typical Saxon and make good souveniers.

Nice idea.

Räuchermänner for sure, but also the Christmas Pyramiden (think helicopter meets a wooden wedding-cake-like contraption that spins like a merry-go-round under candle power). Any football playing friends might appreciate a Dynamo jersey).

I was soooo surprised to see these things in Cali and Chicago at friends' houses. They love that stuff!

That's also an excellent idea. Any kind of wood-worky stuff from the Erzgebirge is good for souveneirs- but it depends on how easy the stuff is to actually get home without breaking. unsure.gif

How about something a little more extravagant ? biggrin.gif

Would they let that through customs? unsure.gif

Depending on your budget, of course...How about a nice new BMW built in Saxony

Hey where to find those trabi t-shirts and other ddr memorabilia in Dresden?
Sudhi
Just off Pragerstrasse and right behind Karstadt, there is a shop specializing in such memorabilia.
