Experiences with Deutsche Bahn car sharing

Have you used this DB service? How was it?

Does anyone use DB Car Sharing? I am a Bahncard 100 customer and can register for this service for free. I wonder if it is worth it? Only occasionally I need car. Like now I'm starting to move apartment in the evenings after work and I need a mode of transport for this job.

I've been browsing their website www.dbcarsharing.de and seem to understand the gist of it. They have a price calculator. I can hire a Komfort Klasse car like a Passat for 4 hours between 08:00 and 20:00 and mileage calculation of 40 km for the grand total of 34,32 euro. If I use any class of car after 20:00, it would only cost me 13.80 euro for 4 hours.

Is there a catch I'm missing? How does filling the car up with petrol work? Is petrol included in the rental? I haven't figured that part out yet from the website.

Would I get a better deal by hiring from SIXT or some other rental company? Maybe not, just looked prices on the web and are only on per day basis and would only beat it over a longer term.

my German teacher used this service and she says it is good for short term rentals (few hours!) but sometimes thre can be problems with car availability.

The price includes petrol as far as I'm aware, and as you mention the big advantage is that you can hire a car for just a couple of hours, making it cheaper than a normal car-hire company. Generally speaking, the DB Carsharing site is a central site for local cooperatives that run the service in that town or city; in Munich, for example, it is run by Stattauto. if you book in advance then getting a car shouldn't be a problem, although this will vary from city to city.
