Hi, I am a female in my late 20's, moving to Hamburg for work in late September through the end of the year minimum. Wondering if anyone knows of furnished apartments within a reasonable budget in an interesting area. Thank you!

Rental of furnished accommodation is not normal in Hamburg or Germany generally.
There is a small supply of expensive furnished accommodation by mostly private landlords
who will happily take non-German speakers for a ride.
Stay in a hotel when first in HH and then look at the Hamburger Abendblatt (daily paper)
on Saturdays (and to a lesser degree on Wednesdays).
Young people often live in "Wohngemeinshaeften" (shared flats).
There are three sources of unfurnished flats (the vast majority):-
a) Private landlords (directly or through a Makler - estate agent)
b) Company owned flats (directly or through a Makler - estate agent)
c) (My preference) flats owned by "Bauverein / Genossenschaeften"
These are non-commercial organisations - SAGA, Schiffszimmergenossenschaft,
Fiefstuecken etc. They are big and mostly have flats all over town.
They are professional outfits and the rents are very fair with good quality
admin. and maintenance.
Be prepared to pay a hefty deposit and to have a long notice period
(plus Makler's fees).
You also have to leave a flat in exactly the decorative state in which you
found it - take photos!
It's a very different set up to the UK / US - very legalistic, but generally
you get a good deal - unless you are the naive non-German speaking foreigner..
(Not in all cases - I've rented furnished twice - one good, one bad - my son has
rented unfurnished twice with good experiences).
You can furnish a flat cheaply from IKEA - but you often need a kitchen!
Unfurnished flats usually have no fitted kitchen - which cost EUR 1500 up
+ Labour (usually v. dear) costs.
(You need to pay for a TV licence too - GEZ forms from your Bank!!)

Had another few thoughts. Key in "Mietwohnzentrale Hamburg" or "Wohngesellschaft Hamburg"
into German Google and you will find offers of rooms in shared flats or houses.
Young singles congregate in Ottensen and Altona (a bit like the Greenwich Village of old).

I was wondering...
Since I live in Israel, I have to go to the army, and I want to live in Germany for a month or so before I begin my service in the Israeli Forces.
So, is Hamburg a good choice? I also want to check the Hamburg Uni while I'm there and I was wondering how much will it cost for 2 persons in a furnished flat... and where are the good places to live in.
Thanks
