Sexist song lyrics

What are the most disgusting you've heard?

I bought a CD of various songs from the 70s and 80s and heard Charlene's, I've Never Been to Me for the first time. At first it sounded fine until I listened to the lyrics more closely. I think I'm going to throw up in my mouth just a little every time I hear it. The press has given rap music a hard time about their extreme sexist lyrics (and rightly so) but looking back a bit, there is sexism in songs that are classified as "good, clean fun" as well.

I've Never Been to Me is especially disgusting as it's sung by a woman, to other women about how they should live their lives. According to the lyrics, the only true paradise for a woman is to be a wife and mother.

Here are some of the choice lyrics:

Hey, you know what paradise is?
It's a lie, a fantasy we create about people and places as we'd like them to be
But you know what truth is?
It's that little baby you're holding, it's that man you fought with this morning
The same one you're going to make love with tonight
That's truth, that's love...

Sometimes I've been to crying for unborn children that might have made me complete
But I took the sweet life, I never knew I'd be bitter from the sweet
I've spent my life exploring the subtle whoring that costs too much to be free
Hey lady...
I've been to paradise, (I've been to paradise)
But I've never been to me

Gag.

Anyway, there are a few more out there..especially in Country music but also in Rock. Know of any?
If you haven't had your Monday morning dose of vomit-inducing sexism here is I've Never Been to Me

Männer sind Schweine by Die Ärzte...

Sexist but by stereotype, quite true!

A good start is Jimmy Soul's If You Wanna Be Happy. Class. But I didn't follow his advice...

You hadn't heard "I've never Been to Me" before?
Then you haven't seen Priscilla, Queen of the Desert?

It's the opening song and sung by a Sydney drag queen.
Girl, get yourself down tho the video store and rent, no buy that movie!

"Angel is a Centrefold" is the first sexist song that sprang to mind.
Kind of its OK for men to consume porn but thatthe consumer is then horrofoed that "his" girl is partcipating.
Eleanor Rigby
I guess the obvious cliche would be "Stand by Your Man" - Tammy Wynette

And maybe that was just her opinion?

I see nothing sexist about the lyrics. Sure, her opinion doesn't agree with yours, but it doesn't make them sexist.

So, why does the "cliche" make the lyrics sexist? Sure, they're a bit outdated, as that was the norm fifty years ago. Some people still do feel that way. It doesn't make the lyrics sexist, though, in my opinion.

Run For Your Life, Beatles
Yes, de mortuis nihil nisi bene and all, but John sure was a misogynistic bastard.

Well I'd rather see you dead, little girl
Than to be with another man
You better keep your head, little girl
Of I won't know where I am

You better run for your life if
you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand little girl
Catch you with another man
That's the end little girl

Then he states that it's all in his head:

Well you know that I'm a wicked guy
And I was born with a jealous mind
And I can't spend my whole life
Trying just to make it tow the line

Like, get yourself a restraining order, little girl!

Let this be a sermon
I mean everything I've said
Baby, I'm determined
And I'd rather see you dead

Fifty? Stop making me feel old! This was a hit in 1968, not even 40 years ago!

There's a really old song (maybe 40s, same jizz as "we are the Ovaltinies") which makes me vom bigtime but it's struggling not to be remembered - something in it like "keep young, stay beautiful, if you want to be loved" ...

Sorry, I just threw a number out there - I didn't realize that it was so "recent."

But, to carry on my point about "sexism" versus "personal opinion:" it is a fine line. The song Where Do You Draw the Line by the Dead Kennedys come to mind:

Ever notice hard line radicals can go on star trips too,
Where no one's pure & right except themselves.
"I'm cleansed of the system" ('cept when my amp needs electric power)
Or, "The Party Line says 'No, Feminists can't wear fishnets.'"

I gotta have J.O.B if i wanna be with you?

More like you gotta get some S.L.I.M.F.A.S.T and a H.A.I.R.C.U.T if you wanna be with me

I agree...its so different when you see it sung in Priscilla. I could lend it to you Dana, but you´re a bit far away.

I "feel" the lyrics differently myself, to me the song is more about being happy with a "simple" life, the basics of life... whatever that may be to you (children, man or not) instead of running around in the glitz, living the high life. Being your true authentic self. That is my inspiration for the way I want to be. I have so much to be grateful for (family and friends, health, education) that no money or partying can buy .
