I bought a CD of various songs from the 70s and 80s and heard Charlene's, I've Never Been to Me for the first time. At first it sounded fine until I listened to the lyrics more closely. I think I'm going to throw up in my mouth just a little every time I hear it. The press has given rap music a hard time about their extreme sexist lyrics (and rightly so) but looking back a bit, there is sexism in songs that are classified as "good, clean fun" as well.
I've Never Been to Me is especially disgusting as it's sung by a woman, to other women about how they should live their lives. According to the lyrics, the only true paradise for a woman is to be a wife and mother.
Here are some of the choice lyrics:
Hey, you know what paradise is?
It's a lie, a fantasy we create about people and places as we'd like them to be
But you know what truth is?
It's that little baby you're holding, it's that man you fought with this morning
The same one you're going to make love with tonight
That's truth, that's love...
Sometimes I've been to crying for unborn children that might have made me complete
But I took the sweet life, I never knew I'd be bitter from the sweet
I've spent my life exploring the subtle whoring that costs too much to be free
I've been to paradise, (I've been to paradise)
But I've never been to me
Anyway, there are a few more out there..especially in Country music but also in Rock. Know of any?
If you haven't had your Monday morning dose of vomit-inducing sexism here is I've Never Been to Me
