My family and I are relatively new to Munich and were invited on Sunday to a co-worker's house for brunch and swimming. In the U.S., invitees would typically bring as a gift to the host/hostess a bottle of wine, flowers, or dessert. What is the tradition in Germany? Any suggestions on what I could bring would be greatly appreciated!

You should bring a gift along. You can't go wrong with flowers or a bottle of wine. I would maybe take a nice bottle of Riesling with. But it would definitely be advisable to take a small present with.

OMG. Swimming with the co-workers right off the bat. Yikes.
But yes, the protocol is about the same. Flowers and wine. Got anything from the Homeland you could bring as a small gift? I took to bringing over small Yankee candles as a gift reserve for Euro folks, for example.

Or if you're really amibitious (and fairly good at baking), you could take an apple pie with.

Massage oil. You know, for getting things going after the skinny dipping begins.

You might as well suggest tingly lube.

German etiquette as I learned it 30-odd years ago requires flowers on the first visit. Nowadays a living plant can replace the traditional bouquet. I have found that a plant-growing set, i.e. a small bag of soil, a pot and flower or herb seeds is always appreciated. Damned if I can remember where I got it, though. Try Obi or Dehner or Praktiker.

Flowers are always good - get a potted, blooming plant if it's really hot because your bouquet would probably die before you reach their house. I wouldn't go for wine for brunch, just for dinner invitations...
Swimming with the coworker on a Sunday at their house? Very un-German, but ok, may be fun...
