Bed linen size differences, U.S. vs. Germany

Is it worth bringing queen-size bed sheets over?

Hi everyone,

My husband and I will be moving to Berlin in September. It occurred to me that our sheets for our queen bed might be useless in Germany due to different standards of sizes of beds. Are they worth bringing to Germany?

Thanks,
Ali

Are you bringing the bed?

180, 160, 200 cm by 200 cm - that's cups of mustard

Depends on what kind of bed you want to get here. You can get a 1.40m width bed which is about 5 inches less wide than a queen-sized one so you could use your fitted sheets though they would not fit perfectly. If you want a 1.60m or 1.80m bed then they won't be of any use.

German pillow sizes are also different, being 40x40cm (square).

I still use my US twin size bedding here (at my parents' house)... You can buy pillows similar (but not the same) to the ones you use in the U.S. which is what I do.

I think I'd decide that dependent on how much you like your sheets and maybe also how expensive they were?!

Yes, I'd say if you're bringing the bed itself, the sheets will be very useful. You might even want to buy and bring an extra set, since you won't be able to replace them there.

If not, best sell or store the Queen sheets and buy your bedding in Germany.

Another difference between US and German beds in general is that European styles are quite a bit lower to the ground than American ones. Something to consider if you are still trying to decide whether to bring your bedroom suite or not.

We are not bringing our bed and since we are only going to be in Germany for 3 years, storing them will not be a problem. Sounds like we will just buy our bed (and pillows! - didn't even think of that - thanks!) and linens when we get there.

Thanks for the quick replies! This seems like a great group of people. I can't wait to meet some of you in person in a few months.

Beds here are for one person only. Even if it is a double bed, the mattress is for one person only. No idea why that is and it sucks. Also, all beds are down on the ground. You will not jump up into bed, but sit down into bed. That sucks too and is why I built my very own American style bed here. Then I got a waterbed and am happy as a clam.

Bed not new. Stored 3 years. Bed less not new. You go back, bedless. Bring bed. Sell bed. Do not walk in middle of road and store bed.

I wasn't talking about storing the bed (we are giving it to my sister), I was talking about storing the linens. Thanks for the concern though.

I have a 160cm mattress, that is bigger than queen sized. Of course you can buy a mattress that is bigger than 90x200cm!

Just an example: http://www.ikea.com/de/de/catalog/products/10099005
Available in sizes: 80x200cm, 90x200cm, 100x200cm, 140x200cm, 160x200cm, 180x200cm

While we are on the topic of linens: I need to buy my first set of bedsheets and towels in Berlin. Where do you recommend I go? I know Ikea sells them at reasonable prices, but their store is not nearby. I went to Butler's but it was a) expensive and cool.gif they seemed only to sell pillowcases and duvet covers but no bedsheets. Am I missing something?

Thanks.
Kay
Any department store should have them all.

You'll get bedlinen in all major department stores like kaufhof, Karstadt, kaWeDe and sometimes Tchibo, Lidl and Aldi are also doing bedlinen and also you can find it often in furniture shops.
