Where to buy lower sodium food

Tips for avoiding salt overload

It might be just me, but I've found almost all the food here to be extremely salty. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to find lower sodium foods? I haven't seen any in the stores around here, although I'm not really sure what I should be looking for as my German is still pretty basic.

Look for products that are "Natriumarm"

Basic chemistry: sodium = natrium and salt = NaCl (sodium/natrium chlorid(e))

No Salt = KCl (potassium/kallium chlorid(e))

The difference being the sodium/natrium that is harmful in high doses or to people with high blood pressure/heart problems. If you are just looking for stuff that isn't infused with salt because of the taste overload, then go raw (fresh or frozen) with no processing.

Cook it yourself?

Avoid processed food. Cook from scratch. You can then add how much salt you want or don't want (as well as avoiding all the salt, additives, fats, sugars, oils etc. in processed food). There's also a low-sodium salt (33% sodium chloride, 66% potassium chloride) called "Lo Salt": http://www.thefoodhall.es/images/LOSALT.JPG

Can one but Lo-Salt here in Germany? I have never seen it. I used ot use it all the time in the UK.

Thanks for the replies. While I do cook lunch myself, it's not really a possibility for me to cook breakfast/dinner items (sausage, cheese, etc). These types of items seem much saltier here than their US equivalents. I'll look out for the "Natriumarm".
