Recovering from a throat infection

Suggested phlegm treatments available in Germany

Ok I have been to a doctor and got prescribed paracetamol and some aluminum salt mouthwash to gargle with which was all very good. I am definately on the road to recovery (it started on Wednesday) It was actually not really any fun, hot and cold, sore throat, bit of a cough and the underlying feeling of being hit by a train. However that is pretty much all resolved and I am trying to study for my tests that are coming up, but I still have all this nasty phlegm in my throat (this is the gross part). So every morning I wake up and spend about two hours coughing up chunks of phlegm. I know this is my body rejecting dead viruses and the natural bodies defense systems at work, however I can't really be bothered with it. Does anybody know some way of making this more bearable? Or even a way of dealing with it. At home I would probably take some cough/cold syrup, but I don't think that really exists here due to the fact that it ain't herbal enough (blasted krauts and their krauter)

Any help would be gladly appreciated.

Go to Apotheke and ask if ACC 600 will help you. Once per day a tablet disolve in water & then drink it.
Mariposa
Of course you can get cough syrup here, you just need to ask for it. tongue.gif

What the hells it called? what brand would you recommend? Is it just a bunch of 'erbs? I don't want no hippie shit, I've had my fill of that stuff wink.gif
MichiS
Ask for "Hustensaft".
Be prepared for the following question:
"schleimlösend oder reizlindernd?"

The pharmcist will tell you what brand is good for you. If you want stronger stuff go see a doctor. He'll prescribe you something stronger most probably with Codein.
garibaldi
"Hustensaft! Any brand. Wick does one. Don't drive when you've taken it. Contains codeine. ph34r.gif

Ah MichiS got there before me.

cool so now all I have to figure out is if I want it to sooth or just expunge the mucus out of my system by lubricating the throat and thinning the mucus. This is awesome guys! I'm running off to the pharmacist now.

Can recommend ACC 600. The Wicks is good but pretty dear, something STUPID like EUR 12 for a bottle with 4 daily doses.
garibaldi
Monkstown, "dear" is relative in this case. The poor lad is coughing up gallons of greeny white yellow tinged gungy syrupy like stuff every morning and is just thinking of the environment. He wants to get it all out and into a large plastic yoghurt beaker in one go and then stop off at the recycling centre on his way to work. I fully understand his predicament. The RC near us has a snot/phlegm container just inside the gates. It's always full and bubbles like mushroom soup in the making. Grey crows smoking tabs sit around the edges with fishing rods trying to hook the solid bogies. rolleyes.gif

Just now saw this, glad others helped, I would not have been able to suggest one, as I rarely get sick, and do not really have a lot of experience with cough syrups.
I can tell you that Wick DayMed and MediNait are the same thing as Dayquil and Nyquil though. But that is for colds in general, not just coughs.

It's a decongestant so you'll be hawking up even more phlegm...better in than out though wink.gif

Same brand, but other than that, I have both here and umm...completely different active ingredients.

I wish we had dayquil here, daymed sucks, I want to be numb and still able to work when I'm sick.

It also dilutes the phlegm, the fizziness works on it and turns it from mushroom soup in the making to relatively harmless gobs of snot two feet long. Remember to drink plenty, iain, fizzy drinks in this case are good. Do you have fizzy vitamin C tablets? You can get them just about anywhere (Penny, Tengelmann, Kaufland). You should have one of them a day, they come with zinc as well. I have been on a vitamin C/zinc/mangesium regime since October and haven't have a severe cold since while I am generally a sucker for bronchitis.
Uncle Jamal
Smoke more tabs.

You can buy the Wicks stuff in the UK as NightNurse and it is cheaper than Germany and come in larger bottle so you can get munted and throw shapes in a dodgy club all weekend.
Boots also do an own brand version which is significantly cheaper again but isn't as tasty.

ok ended up getting some hustensaft called Mucosolvan. I was looking at the ACC 600 and I asked why he gave me the Mucosolvan and not the ACC 600 which many people had recommended me. I was told this stuff is much stronger plus it cleans out your bronchial passages. Which sounds like it would be nice. Already on the lots of tea and bubbly water regime however will probably pick up some of this vitamin C/zinc stuff later on. That and a nice spicy curry for supper should have me sorted out fairly quickly.

Thanks for all the help guys it seems to really have helped.

Gargle with hydrogen peroxide and don't look at the shit that you cough up afterwards unless you like being grossed out. Afterwards suck down some throat coater to undue the very bad taste and burning sensation. Warm tea with honey or some more expensive pharmacy crap will do the trick.

Dude you tuff as nails if thats your remedy? What concentration of hydrogen peroxide should I use, I only have the 1 mol/L stuff kicking round the house.

Dilute is a bit to suit your taste. I think I use a 5-15% solution depending on the phlegm. Yeah it can be rough, but it clears that shit out pronto! Oh and the foaming action is kinda cool. Look honey, I have rabies. biggrin.gif

Completely different active ingredients? (I only have Daymed here, as I used up all my Dayquil, but the active ingredients for Dayquil are on the website of Vicks.)

Daymed:
325mg Paracetamol
10mg Dextromethorphanhydrobromid
12.5mg Phenylpropanolaminhydrochlorid

Dayquil:
325mg Acetaminophen
10mg Dextromethorphan HBr
12.5mg Phenylephrine HCl

How are those active ingredients completely different?

Paracetamol = Acetaminophen
HBr = Hydrobromid
The only difference is the last active ingredient which is a nasal decongestant, and they are very similar in their chemical form, too (only difference being propanolamin / ephrine).

MediNait in 30ml:
7.5mg Doxylaminsuccinat
15mg Dextromethorphanhydrobromid
600mg Paracetamol
8mg Ephedrinhemisulphat (equals 6.2mg Ephedrin)

Nyquil in 15ml:
6.25mg Doxylamine succinate
15mg Dextromethorphan HBr
500mg Acetaminophen

(Nyquil in 30ml:
12.5mg Doxylamine succinate
30mg Dextromethorphan HBr
1000mg Acetaminophen)

Nyquil is a little higher dosed on the first three active ingredient, and contains no Ephedrinhemisulphat, but that is it. And the dosage is something you can just modify by taking more MediNait than you would Nyquil.

I should update this to include the fact that the H2O2 bottle is only a 3% solution to start with and not 15% as I had thought. So that should read use a 1-3% depending on how you dilute it. If you do use a 15% solution, please report back if you can what happened? I am kinda curious. ph34r.gif

Also, engage the physical factor.

Go on a bike ride every morning that resembles a stage in the Tour de France.

The idea is to get your lungs pumping, which will help in clearing them, alternatively, jog at a fast pace.

The exercise will also clear your mind and give you an endorphine rush.

(When I had a chronic cough a couple years ago, this really helped out. I also went to the fitness club every morning and sat in the steamroom taking super deep breaths to loosen up the stuff before the said run. Then have regular "clearing" sessions either outside or at the sink.)

Talk to your physio before following Tomasino's advice ph34r.gif .
