Hello,
We are new here at Munich and just brought our dog from Israel to here with all the certificates.
One of my colleague told me that i need to register my dog with the authority.
Would you be kind and give me some information regarding this procedure.
Also, maybe you know if there is any problem to travel with dog from Germany to Switzerland?
Thanks.

Link to the registration forms.
You can register your dog(s) online or print the form, fill it out and send it to the address on the form. If you need any help with the German questions you can PM me. Sorry, no info about traveling with dawgs, I am a cat person.

Do you have a German bank account yet? The tax office prefers taking the tax out by direct debit. Which breed is your dog? Depending on that you may have to muzzle it in public. Before I kick off a debate: I have seen cloth muzzles, not cages, that give the dog more breathing and sniffing space but prevent it from opening its mouth very far.
Does any dog owner have a link to the dog breed regulations? Thanks.

Most dogs don't need muzzles except when travelling on public transport.
Any vet will set up a dog's passport for you. The passport just identifies the
dog and details the dates of the shots the doggie has had.You may have to
show the passport when crossing borders to prove that it has had the required shots.
Get liability insurance - you never know what doggies can get up to.
Keep the doggie on a lead when publicsigns so decree.
Carry poo bags at all times. We have also had Crusoe chipped.
And off you go...open season on all cats!

My three-legged cat outran a trim 3/4 standard sized poodle. I wouldn't worry, cat owners.
Thanks for the detailed info, g.

Register a dog? Really ? I have been here 7 months with my greyhound & had no clue about this... Is it like a serious offence not having registered & stuff - YET? How much does this registration cost? Is it a one-time thing?

Sometimes I wonder how people might have managed without Toytown... aeons ago...

Just quietly download the form and register, I don't think there will be a penalty if you don't tell them about your illegal pooch. But you can get a fine for having an untaxed dog if they do a random check now.

Look, if you're asked you can say that you've taken the Dog from a friend who has just moved away.
Here's the
Link for the registration form.
For a normal Dog it's about €75 per year.
And you should have liability insurance €130 per year.
His/Her passport must be authenticated to show that's He/She's had rabies and distemper shots otherwise you'll have problems travelling outside Germany.
So, if we do things right
man can also be a Dog's best friend.

QUOTE (garibaldi @ Jul 13 2007, 1:53 pm)

To clarify, German trains (not U or S-Bahn) require dogs to be muzzled but train staff rarely enforce the rule if the dog is quiet - however, if you're travelling by train with the dog you should have a muzzle with you to show willing. In Austria dogs must be muzzled on all public transport, and in Vienna they have to wear muzzles in public places (though forums seem to indicate this isn't totally enforced). I don't know exactly about Switzerland but having a muzzle and lead with you is an EU regulation.

Thanks for the links, sarabyrd and garibaldi -- I knew I had to register my little one, but didn´t realize it would be so easy -- I just did it online. Also interesting to know I need to get a muzzle for him -- though I´ll never put it on him...

I didn't know I was harbouring an illegal alien - she just looks like harmless old retired greyhound... Just resgistered ! Thanks Sarabyrd.
To think I have been on U-bahns and S-bahn even as far as Erding with her !
Dangerous dog breeds and regulations for Germany - this was the latest list that I had kept in mind before I moved..

Ruthie, in our experience train staff are about 95% cool and 5% stern, so our fella hasn't worn his muzzle much either. But it gives you a smug feeling when you can point to it. More subtle than wearing a T-shirt saying "I am a responsible dog owner", and roughly on the level as producing a plastic bag with a flourish while your dog is pooping, JUST AFTER anyone around starts to go through the tut-tut routine and JUST BEFORE they come up and start being abusive to you. It's all down to timing.

Hello Toytown,
I am in the process of moving to Munich and I would like to bring my dog. I saw that you said you had all the certificates in line and then all you have to do is register. Could someone please lay out for me exactly what all the certificates are that I need? Can my vet here take care of that or do I need to find a German vet? I'm a little confused and I would like some clarification. I was told by a couple of people that my dog would have to be quarantined and it often takes as long as six months. Considering my dog is only 8 months old, I definitely don't want her to be quarantined for 6 months. If it is just a matter of getting all her shots and registering her, that would be fantastic!
Please let me know.
Thank you!

P.S. my German is not the greatest. Is there an English registration form link? Anytime I click the British flag to switch it to English it takes me back to the home page and I can't find the registration form.

I hate when people say "use the search function", but...
there are a few topics on this. A few people have given their experience.
if your dog is chipped, has had it's rabies vaccination, you have a bilingual health form you're fine. you might also want the dog to be wormed about 24-48 hr prior to going. I'd also suggest being up to date on all other vaccines, but that's more of a convenience issue than a necessity.
Read here and you'll also find more links to
more info here too.

I'm quite drunk so my sugestion is forget that one & get another. At the end of the day it's not like a dog has an accent or something so as long as you get one that looks simliar you can't go wrong. I am a bit mean are't I!? sorry

Hey, we just moved here in June and we have a little Miniature Dachsund (she loves being in the land of her ancestors, haha!!) I digress, anyway, we had her shots updated. The girl in our vet office was familiar with what was required here. If you need a list, let me know and I'll list all that we had done. Once all of that was done, we had the chip inserted by the vet. Then within ten days of travel, we had to have her seen by the vet for a check up and they gave her a tic treatment at this time. They did the paperwork for the international health certificate. That paperwork had to be overnighted to the state office and then sent back to the vet and then we were told to come and pick it up.
I know that's alot of informatin. I hope it makes sense. Anyway, our relocation person actually registered her for us. We had zero quarantine time. The UK has a heavy quarantine from what I understand. I hope this rambling post helps!
Good luck and I hope all goes well!!
