I'll be moving to Hamburg 'properly' tomorrow.
Any idea if there is a cinema showing English speaking movies in Hamburg? Just slightly upset that I'll miss Harry Potter 5 when its premiering in Copenhagen tomorrow but it's moving day to Hamburg .. uurrgg!

End of March this year the Grindel cinema will be shut for good! It's really a shame to see the Grindel go and even though more people have started to come in over the last few months it seems all was too late for this great cinema.

report from Abendblatt

Is there an alternative? Does anyone know if there are other cinemas showing or planning to show movies in English??
Expat Mat
No way! That's crap!

There are a few others that show films in "Original Version" with subtitles and you can search for them on Abendblatt's website:

Kinosearch

You need to select nur OV/ OmU option for Only Original Version or Original version with subtitles.

I like the Abaton, just off Grindelallee (Grindelhof bus stop on No. 4/5 bus). Its small and cosy and sometimes has films in English.

Real shame about the Grindel. Had some good nights there with friends. I think it was struggling to compete with the multiplex places. sad.gif

I was wondering a long time ago how the place could keep going. Whenever we went, the place was nearly empty. I think they really failed to advertise it properly as THE place to watch movies in English without having subtitles flashed in your face. Then as a final desperate measure they started to show more films in German.

There's more money in selling the real estate than showing movies anyway.

Having lived in Hamburg for soooo long, I've seen too many cinemas closing down. It's really a shame about the Grindel.
I hope one of the multiplexes will show a heart for expats and for people who like to see original versions.
Never really understood why it didn't work out in Hamburg. When we were in Berlin for a few days we went to cinema there, I think it was Potsdamer Platz, the Sony Centre. They showed lots of English films. We went to a late show and when we were waiting to get in about 500 people came out of the cinema who had just watched Borat in English. Don't think that was all just expats...
There IS demand for it, look at the sneak previews, it was always full!

What a shame.

Only thing left is renting DVD's with the original version ...

i use the dresden version of this site
http://hamburg.stadtus.de/kino/kinoprogramm.html
to find films in english.

Oh what a drag. We have been to the Grindle a few times and always found it to be quite decent with easy parking. The Abaton http://www.abaton.de/ show English films, but they are often not new releases.

I'm just wondering where I am going to be able to see the Sex and the City movie in English...

Use http://kino-fahrplan.de/programm/heute and look for OF and OmU (original language or original language with subtitles)

The WHAT? Did I miss something? Note to self: apparently!

Come with us to Scotland in three weeks wink.gif - they might show it there...

edit: it makes me really sad that the Grindel closes down.
I've seen my first ever film there: Aristocats. Think I must have been six or so. My Granny took me, and we were both very excited. She booked the (what she thought) best seats for us, in the first row... Oh the stiff neck... tongue.gif
Darjeeling
Oh yeah, there are quite a few people around thinking the best seats on the first row!

@Hammonia, What a cute story! The Sex and the City film comes out in May. Most movies I'd try in German, but this one I have to see in English. Let's figure out where to see it and maybe you, I, Steph and Britta can go see it.
omarsdroog
So where is the closest place that I'll be able to see the "big" movies (Iron Man, The Dark Night, other movies that might not be based on comic books) in English?

Hamburg's English blockbuster cinema closed. So...nowhere. sad.gif

the Abaton is nice.

i heard adver on the radio, according to my bad German UCI has sneak previews in original language. check their web-site to be sure.

cinemaxx also started sneak previews, but they say nothing about the lanuage.
mrloop
http://kino-fahrplan.de/ has the answer. The link "Originalfassungen" lists all the foreign language films in Hamburg. The site is also good for day by day listings

Unfortunately, it doesn't show mainstream movies.

It's true, and sneak preview means you don't know what movie will be shown - which is kinda fun - you need reservations because it's always sold out and it's a whole "event", not just a show up and see the movie night. You have to experience it to appreciate it.

It is quite sad that Grindel closed this year, I saw Sweeny Todd there shortly before it closed but at the time I wasn't aware it was going to happen.

I feel bad for the staff that worked there, they always seemed friendly and jovial, esp when they came to sell the beer pre movie smile.gif

I am gutted as it is the first year in many, that I have really wanted to go to the cinema lots. With Iron Man, Wall E, Indy, Star Wars Clone Wars and a bunch of others that I would like to see.

Hard to believe that the only likely way of seeing them is to either fly back to England, or get a train to somewhere else that is large enough to do those movies in English sad.gif

For all the people who enjoy movies in english, there may be some hope. The Streit's theater near the Jungfernstieg began to run the Monday Sneak Preview after the Grindel has been closed and it seems that with the upcoming Indiana Jones movie, they'll start to feature more and more main stream movie in english.

Here are the two links http://www.cinestar.de/de/kinos-lokal/hamb...sionen-streits/ and www.mysneak.de

Let's just hope that at least this cinema will survive, because a lot of germans, like me, also enjoy their movies in their original version.

PS: Sorry for my bad english, but I'm not a native speaker wink.gif
HamburgChris
Hi everybody. Further to the other posts, I just received a press release from Streits in Hamburg - 13.05.2008. They are now officially taking over the role of showing films in English!!! As I'm at work and time does not allow for a translation, I'll paste the text further down. www.cinestar.de for details, or try this translation: Google Translation - Copy and paste Streits - www.cinestar.de into the website translation tool (not tested). I hope to add more details to my Hamburg English Pages cinema section on the Events page this week - see my profile for link. If anyone is in the mood for a translation, I would appreciate it!

GREAT!

Thanks for the info Chris.

The Streit's is a lovely cinema. Also I'm lucky cos I work just round the corner and it's also close to the underground.

Only bad thing about it: as far as I remember the Streit's is more expensive than other cinemas. Last time I was there we paid DM 17.00 for a blockbuster, can't remember what it was, but it was still in DM, so quite a while ago. At that time in other cinemas you paid about DM 12-13, for the same film/day of the week/time. Then I (seem to) remember the Streit's to sometimes have certain films exclusively for a while and to charge a ridiculously high price for a ticket...
Anyone else remember that? Or am I wrong??

Anyway, let's hope they don't charge more than other cinemas for the dubbed version, just because they can...

Sorry, don't want to be a spoilsport rolleyes.gif
Hammonia
Just called Streit's Kino.

Prices are:
Tuesday = Kinotag = € 4.50 (+ € 1.00 for Loge)
Mon, Wed, Thur = € 6.50
Fri, Sat, Sun = € 7.80

For films like Sex and the City (141 minutes) they charge extra for overlength (could be € 1-2)

You can book via phone (box opens usually 1/2 hour before the first show of the day) or online.
Online you can pick the seat you want, just as normally on the phone or personally at the box.

Sounds all good to me.

Now let's go there and make sure that they don't regret their decision to show the OVs!!!
tarasis
Thats excellent news, many many thanks for posting this. I was starting to worry about seeing Indy smile.gif

Now all they need to do is get Iron Man and I will be over the moon.

As previously mentioned by mrloop Kino Fahrplan provide listings of the originals. As an addition to this they just contacted me today by Email, in German, to confirm that they have this service and to give me this link: http://kino-fahrplan.de/programm/ofs. I take it they do not know about this discussion yet - I had not added it to my website, which I will now do. The link is only slightly different. Take care not to turn up and watch a film in Russian - original does not always mean English! biggrin.gif

Have fun smile.gif
