Hi...Im currenty in Berlin for a month but really fancy paying Dresden a visit but know nothing about the place.

Which area is the most lively in the evenings? Decent bars and so on.

Whats the main attractions and do they have a memorial-mesuem on the 1945 attacks?

Cheers

Are you just travelling by yourself? Neustadt (the north part of town) has the most bars. Just go along Louisenstrasse at night. The memorial is the Frauenkirche! I dont know of a real memorial/museum

Here is a list of the Kneipen

For a two day visit, my must-see attractions would include the Altstadt and the wonderful Gasometer http://www.asisi-factory.de/Projekte/Panom...den/galerie.htm

Is it any wonder that nobody wants to bother meeting up when you keep dissing the place!

Dresden is a great place to visit. I assume you are young so stay in the Neustadt area.

Hostels in Dresden Neustadt

I recoment (and another TT member too, Mondpalast, it is right in the centre of the party area.

The Neustadt really comes allive at weekends, it is a bit quieter during the week.

Cross over the river to the Altstadt and spend a day wandering around all the Baroque buildings. Therei s an information office at Theaterplatz

It is is a nice day I recommend going up the tower of the Frauenkirche (a bit costly, 8 or 10 Euros) but fab views of the entire city.

After that it depends what you are into.

some are:

Old masters picture gallery
Porceling collection.

Mathematical and Physics musuem
Green vault (but you need approx 6 months prior booking to get in there!)
New masters gallery
Transport museum.
Semper opera
Zwinger

and that is only a fraction of what there is.

P.S. If you are coming from Belrin the train stops in Dresden Neustadt first and then to the main station.

I would be interested to know how you found it. Thinking of heading there this weekend.

I have been in Dresden since July. I have found it to be one of the most beautiful cities I have ever visited. It's VERY user friendly because you can see so many things by just taking the tram into town. The place where I live is quiet and beautiful, but I also have the option of going to Neustadt where there are lots of interesting things to see as well as bars, clubs and cute little caféa. I even took one of those tour buses to get a feel for the city. I would highly recommend coming here! It seems to me that Dresden is great place to visit for a weekend or longer! Bike riding along the Elbe is fun, and the biergargens are great too!

An amendment to Deccie's great suggestions...
All of the above can be viewed with a single day museum pass, purchased at the Royal Palace (Residenzschloss). The only exception is the old green vault (Grünes Gewölbe), which is a separate ticket with a time slot. You don't need 6 months, I arrived at ~11 in the morning and got a time slot 17:30 that day. The separate 'new' green vault can be viewed with the day pass, and its worth going to both. Also included in the day pass is the tower at the royal palace. On the way up there is an exhibit about the bombings, the only public mention I have found in the city. It includes many pictures and a description in German. Look for a book laying around for the English translation...

The Stadtmuseum on Pirnaischer Platz has a permanent exhibition on the history of Dresden (which, as one would naturally assume, includes the bombings), and then other smaller changing exhibitions (such as Too Much Future: Punk and Subculture in the GDR).
It is one of 5 Stadtmuseen (City Museums) which has free entry from 14:00-20:00 every Friday.
