Just realized this was coming up in a couple weekends. I went the last 2 years. Last year there were more than 60,000 people there. It is quite an impressive show. Although I thought 2005 was far far better than last year, I am sure it will be great none the less. The fireworks are shot up over the lake and last for around 40-45 minutes.
There is food and music from 6pm and it looks like this years theme (food wise) is Italian.
They have music acts as well. This year they are Reinhard Fendrich & Band, US5, Debbie Rockt!, Gerry&Gary and Power!Percussion. I don't really know any of these though?

can't you see the fireworks for free in and around the Oly-park?

yes and no.
most of
olympiapark will be closed off from around 14:00/15:00 on the day (think the way it was blocked off for the world cup fanfest) and opened to ticketholders from 17:00-18:00. yes youll see the big sky fireworks from pretty much any elevated spot in munich, but youll miss the intensive pyro stuff that will be centered around the lake, stage and surrounding area. theres also an incredible laser show worked in to the pyro program which obviously you wont see unless you get yourself a ticket.
the tickets arent that expensive, it should be pretty great weather to sneak a case of beer in and sit in olympiapark and have a laugh.

Last year we sat about 1/2 way up the Olympiaberg facing the lake, and enjoyed the fireworks exploding directly over us. Just a tip for anyone enjoying a bit closer action than from the lake itself. There were beer concessions up there as well.

Is there any particular meeting spot for those going from Toytown? I'm probably going with another newbie to get tickets at the gate.

I'm gonna miss it, my flight is coming in too late
Gutted I am.
2 (out of 3) weather sites I have looked at are predicting rain for Saturday night.
So wonder if they would show any fireworks. I guess it is a case of taking the umbrella and finding out.
I booked a couple of advance tickets.

the fireworks will go off rain or no rain. i cant see it raining before 1am or 2am in any case.
would definitely recommend getting a spot where you can see the lake. the lights/laser rehersal last night was stunning.
coubertinplatz is full of gastro choices, and BARS of course. afterwards there will be "party party" till around 1 am.

Sunset is short before 9... probably they'll start firing then about quarter to 10. The married-with-kids-it's-easier-to-watch-tv-friends I intended to go with canceled... anyone interested in meeting at the park?

Just to update this thread, the fireworks were from 22:15 - 23:00 almost to the minute.
Interesting choice of music, some really slow moments, preferred the show about two years ago, now that was an impressive display.
Massive queues for food, drink and toilet.
They just do not cope well with crowds here I find.
Two people behind a getränke stand trying to give back Pfand and serve drinks does not a pleasant experience make. Waited about 30 mins just to get to the front to be told 'Cola light aus'. Grrrr. They were also out of beer at this particular stand and my oh my the sparks did fly, I thought this woman was going to jump over the counter and throttle the server.
Homemade pizza (which smelled grand) but they could not keep up with the demand. My colleague queued 45 mins for a slice.
And as for the rain, I left the park shortly after 11 and as I live within walking distance was home before quarter past.
On my way home I felt a few drops but now it is chucking it down out there and has been for about 15 mins.

I went there last night and it was quite a good event. 3 stages with live bands...lots of food just the queues were far too long. I would think of bringing my own food next year and come earlier to have a good seat near the main stage that was unpossible for us as we arrived after 8pm. Fireworks was really amazing together with a laser show and beautiful mainly classical music like i.e. Andra Bocelli . Susen

Twas up on the hill watching them for free. Couldn't see the stuff going on in the park, but the boomers overhead were pretty cool. The finale was a bit disappointing as I hoped for something really BIG!

We watched from our balcony...yeah, we missed most of it I'm sure, but it was enough for us.

It was beauuuutiful! But next year I will definitely appear earlier to occupy the place on the hill. The view of the fireworks is better there than from the opposite side.
