Hi
I'm visiting Munich at the end of this month and would like to know what is the law regarding children (a 13 year old) entering bars in the city? also is it possible to bring her to the quiz nights that are posted on this site.

Cheers

Something Wicked
For children and adolescents (ie under 18 yr old), the "Jugendschutzgesetz" (law for the protection of adolescents) applies. Children younger that 16 yrs are only allowed in restaurants ("Gaststätten") in the company of adults. I'm not sure how long they are allowed to remain there in company of adults but my guess would be 11 p.m. However, if the restaurant is labelled a "night bar" or "night club", it's forbidden for them even in company.

So much for the law - perhaps you can see why Germany is sometimes labelled bureaucratic. wink.gif Sometimes, police will show up on the premises and single out the children under 16 yrs to check their i.d. but I've never seen that happen in pubs or restaurants.

Anyway, I hope that was at least a little helpful. wink.gif

I think police check the discos out for kids below 16 after 10pm to ensure they are home before midnight and to help protect them from the drug scene.

You aren't allowed into nightclubs if you are under 18.

Pubs and bars, kids under the age of 16 are allowed into bars only with a parent or a guardian. There is actually no time when they must leave by if they are with a legal guardian, although it is also up to the pub to decide whether and for how long they allow children in. So it is also a good idea to check with the individual bars to see what their policies are.

Anyone between the ages of 16 and 18 may only be in a pub until midnight without a guardian, but may stay longer if they have a note from their parents allowing them to do so (I'm not making this up!!)

This goes for nightclubs as well, if you are under 18, you are allowed in, but you have to leave before midnight, unless you have a note from your parents. Most places insist under 18s hand in their ausweiss at the door and collect it again at midnight. If a nightclub doesn't let under 18s in, it's their policy, but not the law.

They'll be alright at a quiz night if they are accompanied by a parent. An in the summer the beergardens are ideal.

Sorry to be picky, but this is actually not true.

You are not allowed into nightclubs by law if you are under 18. Full text is here. It's paragraph §4-3

As long as you are accompanying your 13 year old, then you can both be in any of the pubs until midnight. I would check the individual pub's policy in advance, but legally you are fine...

I suppose it depends how a nightclub is defined, but my Teenage daughters have been to various places, such as Nightflight at the airport and have been allowed in, under 18, with the priviso that they either hand in their ausweiss or have a letter from me, saying they can go in and stay after midnight. I believe that Nightflight even have a standard form that you can download and get signed.

what the law states and what establishments actually do can often be two very different things, Allershausen.
Allershausen
It seems odd that they would go to all this seemingly official trouble, if they were breaking the law anyway. There must be more to this.

Here's the web page for Nightflight. (In German) Aufsichtsübertragung.
Allershausen
It comes under paragraph 5 of the link that Hazza gave.

There are certain things that distinguish between a bar and a nightclub. I don't know exactly what they all are (nor am I that interested).

It really depends on how individual places fit into these definitions...

EDIT: Looks like Allerhausen's found out why, anyway!!
