TMJ treatment in Munich

Has a specialist helped your aching jaw?

hello,

does anyone know of anyone here in munich with a TMJ specialty? stands for TemporoMandibular Joint and is also sometimes called TMD (TemporoMandibular Disorder). you might have this if your jaw aches or cracks, you grind or clench your teeth, your bite does not meet correctly, you have headaches and/or back/neck pain that you attribute to tension and such about the head. looking for somebody who knows about this. could be a chiropractor or osteopath (preferably with a cranial specialty), orthopedist, physical therapist, dentist, rolfer, anybody. i've not had much luck with craniosacral therapy, but i guess would be willing to try it again, as i've heard that's done here. the two people who've previously helped me in the states were a dentist and a chiropractor. well, and a couple of bartenders! what i am not looking for is a surgeon or an orthodontist (i think orthodontia was what caused it in the first place).

while i'm on this, if anyone knows anything about German views on TMJ, i would be interested in this. in the U.S. it is just beginning to be recognized not as a sign of insanity but as an actual physical disorder, but treatments vary widely (antidepressants, nighttime appliances, botox). what is the prescribed treatment for it, if any, in germany? does insurance pay for this treatment? more importantly in my case, does public insurance pay for it? thanks!

I sufferered this in the UK and received Steroid injections into the joint. This worked but did take a few months to right itself completely!

TMJ in Germany is still sort of unchartered waters... not alot of research in this area and a definat lack of treatments options here. I will ask who we use. Insurance not sure if it covers or not, depends on who you see and how the bills are writen up. If you are private, most likely, but kasse, highly doubt anything they see as 'alternative' would be covered.

We use Prof. Dr. Müller, Joseph-Spital Str. 15 (city center) 54 81 000 he is a Kiefergelenkspezialist or a TMJ specialist.
Good Luck

I received treatment for this in both Germany and the US, and the treatment was the same - a night guard. I was having horrible migraines with vision issues, light sensitivity, nausea, etc. I also had pain in my jaw and temple, and it was all caused by grinding my teeth in my sleep. The night guard fixed everything. I got one in Germany and didn't have a single migraine while using it (for about a year), and I'd been having multiple migraines per month. When I moved back to the States, my guard broke and I stopped using it for a week. I had a week-long migraine. So I went out and got a new one, and voila - no migraines and no other pain. I've known lots of people who've had all kinds of TMJ issues helped with night guards. If your insurance won't cover TMJ treatment, then just tell your dentist you're grinding your teeth in the night, and he'll fix you up with one (that is, if it would help you). Good luck!

hi there,
good tips all of these. i've never heard of steroid injections but i've had other types of injections. i also have a night guard; i am much better with it than without, but alas it does not solve my problems. i have tried a surprising array of other approaches. nothing helps. i think i need a good yoga class, along with an intuitive chiropractor. my guy in new york is a cranial specialist and pretty much a genius. i have looked at the chiropractor thread and will investigate these doctors. and i will also call this tmj specialist, thanks carm, although because i am publicly insured i bet you are right, it will not pay. any idea what it is he does for people? i'm sure he makes night guards, but does he do muscle therapy or anything?

other suggestions, please do keep them coming.

When I was having the migraine issues in Munich, my doc prescribed neck massages. Perhaps this would be another option? Maybe they can work on muscles associated with the TMJ.

Hi Crayolab,

the Teeth, TMJ, Spinal Cord and the Muscles of Mastication, Neck and Spine ... all work together as an Apparatus! You need to find the root cause of your problem. It could lay anywhere... could be your TM Joint itself, or in Bruxism (grinding of Teeth) or in an insufficient Bite ( BissHoehe as they call it here), or in the Neck and Spine region. Sometimes also other factors like Stress trigger this situation.
A Bite guard does always seem to be the first line of treatment, but one needs to find out the factor that has lead to an advanced situation like yours. Yoga is always a good accompanist to all sorts or Therapies when TMJ is concerned.
The basic ( Adjustierte Schiene) Bite guard is covered by the Private as well as the Public Insurance. Massages, Physiotherapy ,etc. are also covered if you have a Prescription from your Physician.

I can forward you a list of tried and tested Denstists specialized in TMJ in Munich . But try going to the one Carm suggested first.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

nope, no idea what he does, as everyone's TMJ problems are different and need to be treated different. I would think at the first appointment he would asses the situtation and then look at your nightguard and make a treatment plan- either a new night guard, meds, physio... the treatment depends on the diagnosis. I work in a Dental Office and we do some TMJ, but for advanced cases we send them to the doc I mentioned.
Good luck in whatever you decide.
