I really enjoy the unaccustomed tastes and the variation in venues that our round of ethnic dinners offers. However, I think that we are neglecting the unique regional cuisine by reaching too far and going too exotic, thus losing our appreciation of the downhome delicacies offered by Munich and its surroundings. What is couscous compared to Schweinsbraten?

Therefore, I am making a daring proposal: Let's go to one of the lesser frequented Bavarian restaurants. Weißes Bräuhaus is becoming too Hofbräu-like, the Hofbräuhaus is hectic at the best of times, and Donisl is a farce, but Dürnbräu (no proper website), just off Tal, retains a high standard of cuisine while providing a genuine Bavarian experience.

So if there are any takers I am open for suggestions as to date or even your favorite Bavarian off-the-beaten-track place and will do the organizing.

EDIT: Kleine Schmausefalle, 2 August 2007, 7:30pm
Allershausen
I'd be interested, I'm not a big fan of Bayerisch food, but I do like a nice Schweinshaxe. Judging by the price of their beer, €3,80, I'm guessing this is not a cheap place though. Of course that may mean that it's good, sometimes you get what you pay for! smile.gif
BadDoggie
I can't do Mondays and Saturdays are limited, but I'm game.

woof.
Carm
I would be up for a Bavarian Night, a wed, thurs, or frida work usually best for me.
The Oktoberfest Museum aslo does nice Bavarian, Spektakel, SchmauseMaus and St. Emmerans are a few of my fav places to go.
sarabyrd
The ethnic dinners are generally on Thursdays, those being the only evening without other scheduled activities. And as I said, other suggestions are welcome. After five pages of chat and arguments I will decide which one we will go to (irony). For example, just about any Augustiner is guaranteed to have good food (personally, I would avoid the one in the Fußgängerzone).
Uncle Nick
I would be up for it and the Augustiner Bräustuberl on the Landsbergerstr. is pretty good and relatively cheap.
Wizadora
I would like to try as I always avoid Bavarian food like the plague, perhaps if I go with people who actually like it I can get a few pointers as to what's good that ain't Pork.
sarabyrd
Shredded sour calf lung in champignon-cream sauce with a bread dumpling? (Sorry, I have a migraine and that always makes me act vicious.)
Panama
I'm game as well, for me Thursday or Friday night seem to be feasible. Won't be in town from Mon-Thu for a few weeks to come. The Augustiner in Landsbergerstr. is good, but I would try the Dürnbräu 'cause I've never been there.

@Wizadora, there is some bavarian dish with duck, can't remember the name now. It was really tasty at the Hofbräukeller.
berny
Next Ethnic Dinner: Lets eat a russian for a change?
Panama
ohmy.gif I thought cannibalism was not really accepted around here. Or are you proposing some kind of swingers night with a bunch of ossies? dry.gif
Uncle Nick
@berny: do you know any Russian restaurants in Munich? - I tried googling it with no result.
berny
its frowned upon Panama, but i seriously doubt its illegal. Down by the Isar, few beers...barbeque...OH NO! forgot the meat! No bother... "You There! Small Boy!! come here and sit on this grill for 10 minutes per side...lovely"

no russian restaurants in munich as far as i know, some russian bars, but not for the likes of you and me. well maybe you.
AllSaint
@UN: I went to Malachit a couple of years ago with my Russian course
sarabyrd
I was going to suggest that UN organizes a Russian Do sometime this autumn until I realilzed that they are cannibals. Item 5 on their starters is a Korean style salad "aus frischen Mohren". Keeps the African population down, though.
Small Town Boy
I can recommend Dürnbräu; it's not cheap but it's good quality.
eurovol
Do not go to the tourist traps! Check out Alten Wirt in München-Moosach!

Personally I would continue to neglect it. However, in light of the fact that you usually support me on my evenings and in full expectation of a fun crowd, I will probably force myself to come along.
I have also been to Dürnbräu several times, and agree that it's a bit touristy (in fact every time I've been it's been invitations from visiting business partners) but does serve good quality (if you like that sort of thing cool.gif )

That was exactly my thought, Rua! laugh.gif

I wonder though, do they have fish on the menu? I mean stuff from the Bavarian lakes and rivers, like trout? I guess that also counts as Bavarian cuisine, and it can be very nice if done properly. Bavarian cuisine doesn't have to be just Schweinshaxe and sour lungs.

Not in my experience it isn't! tongue.gif

As I said I'm not a big fan of Bavarian food, but they do have some good stuff and I'm always keen to go somewhere new.

I will pack up the family and some friends (they speaketh the German language) to go to the Alten Wirt Moosach. The tram stops right out front of it. The Sbahn stops about 300m away. This is not a tourist trap and if planned right, there will be local entertainment (oompah band and shit).
ian
The Alte Wirt is my local. And yes, its not touristy and has a beergarden and inside they're kiddy friendly. And the building is nice and pointy. And its easy to get to.
So if you want to try something other than the same old places, hop on the U1 or S1 and before you can say "es gibt's doch nicht!" you are there!
Hutcho
I've seen this Alte Wirt at Moosach and it looks pretty interesting.. never been in for a beer though..
sarabyrd
Dürnbräu is now definitely out. I looked at the prices yesterday, they have more or less exploded. Remember to suggest it to your office manager for the Christmas do, though.
So, Alter Wirt Moosach is in the ring along with Spektakel, Schmausemaus, St. Emmeram, Augustinerstüberl.
I am adding Unionsbräu in Haidhausen. The restaurant is bourgeois in the best sense, but their Bierkeller is urig (original, authentic, cool). No fish, sorry GT, but good downhome stuff including but not exclusively pork.
Can we set a tentative date 2 or 9 August? Time app. 7.30pm.
@ eurovol: Any info as to prices? Not much to be gleaned from their website.
Allershausen
2nd of August I can definitely make it, 9th of August I definitely can't!
sarabyrd
Is everyone who intends to attend ok with 2 August? That gives us three weeks to plan, discuss, argue and finally reserve.
Cheers, sb
ruapehu
I can make 2nd August (unless a sudden holiday come up).

Do you already have enough suggestions for a venue, or would it be appropriate to also toss Zum Kuchlverzeichnis into the ring? I've actually never been there (but have ridden past it wildly for many years) but have heard it's lovely - and very urig.

three weeks to plan

There's the rub.
Far too far away to say rolleyes.gif
Panama
I guess I can also make it on August 2. Will probably come late, but will try to get the 15:00 plane instead of the 19:00.
sarabyrd
I thought of Kuchlverzeichnis myself but not until after I had posted Unionsbräu. I think that's what Bavaria between the Wars was like, gutbürgerlich but a little bit stuffy.
By the by, I cannot stand restaurant websites that do not give you prices. I read elsewhere that main dishes are €11 - €18.

Alter Wirt Moosach
Spektakel
Schmausemaus
St. Emmeram
Augustinerstüberl
Unionsbräu
Zum Kuchlverzeichnis

St. Emmeram is delightful but rather inaccessable, being serviced by bus only. Great for a weekend outing but difficult on a school night.
Everything else is well serviced by MVV except for maybe Augustinerstüberl but it does have a streetcar stop right outside.
@ Carm: Any more details on Schmausemaus? I couldn't find it on the net.
madgibson
Think maybe Carm means Kleine Schmausefalle ?! We have used this place for office xmas dinners etc before. It's very nicely decorated and the menus are written in Bavarian if I remember correctly!
eurovol
The Alten Wirt Moosach is not expensive. In the summertime, they grill in the biergarten Thurs-Sat. http://www.alterwirt-moosach.de/grillmen%FC.htm

For groups of 20 or more, they have a special menu and plan that you can request.

St. Emmeram is also a great place, but definitely not easy to get too, much like the AuMeister.

that's it, (thanks madgibson) sorry spelt it wrong- its right by Mariahilfepl there, great place- they even have a big room you can rent out for 300 Euro for parties - for future reference to anybody (you can bring your own food and beverage there too- not the restaurant, but the party room).

guess it depends on what you mean by not easy to get to. I personally think there is life outside of Schwabing, and St. Emmerans is acessable with 3 different buses - one from Richard Strauss Str and one from Johanisskirchen Sbahn, and one from StudentenStadt. I do think its worth it... but that is just my opinion.

Tram nos. 18 and 19 from Hauptbahnhof to Holzapfelstr. are easy enough!
Katrina
Augustinerstüberl - get the S-Bahn to Hackerbrücke, go up stairs, head direction of Theresienwiese along Grasserstr. until traffic light crossing of the Bayerstr./Landsbergerstr.
Cross over street then heading right towards brewery.

Tram? *pffft*

Excellent and very cheap Schweinsbraten, do book though as it can be a tight fit.
sarabyrd
Ok, let's get down to nitty-gritty here as to attendance, date and venue.
(Thanks for the tip, Katrina)
I will be attending and am available on 2 August. Of course, my venue gets my vote (but I will gracefully submit myself to the majority vote): Unionsbräu - Bräukeller.
Carm
I like the Kleine Schmausefalle. Or the Dürnbrau would be good too. Or Spektakal too is good... not a fan of Unions Brau (too many bad experiences with the service there)
eurovol
One here and could bring some others of the German variety. Especially if the place is big enough and quality.
ruapehu
2nd August, Kleine Schmausefalle looks really nice, so that's where I'll put my vote

Any details as to which place you prefer? Just a thought.
helena
Oh gosh, I was planning to come to this as I thought it was this Thursday!!! But you're talking about 3 weeks' time?
sarabyrd
We haven't got very far with this, have we? I want to be sure that we get reservations no matter where we decide to go. So tear your thoughts away from the Biergarten for a moment and give this a thought.
Cheers, sb
Allershausen
Well, I'm still up for the 2nd, but I have no idea where to go, I think you should either make an executive decision or just give us a choice of 3 and we have to vote.
sarabyrd
Works for me.

Unionsbräu
Kleine Schmausefalle
Augustinerstüberl

I will tag St. Emmeram and Alter Wirt Moosach as future venues for a weekend Biergarten do. Zum Kuchlverzeichnis is fairly pricey as well, I looked at their menu last weekend. Well, there are always birthdays that call for a romantic tete-à-tete (can't be bothered with the circonflex).
Panama
From those I've only visited the Augustinerstüberl and I would be up for something new. I've heard the Unionsbräu is a good one, so my vote goes for that one.
Allershausen
I'll vote foe the one I've never been to, so I'll go for Kleine Schmausefalle.
sarabyrd
I will call the Kleine Schmausefalle and reserve for four people, a very intimate ethnic dinner indeed. Unless, of course, more people sign up.
Allershausen
We've still got over a week, I'm sure more will come.
Carm
is there an official sign up page or just here on the thread? as I did sign up on the thread about 2 weeks ago.
sarabyrd
No real sign-up sheet, I guess there should be one just to make sure. Thanks for the reminder, Carm.
