Getting a Dirndl shortened - Munich

Is this advisable or not?

Renia
I am looking for a particular colour/s of dirndl at present and have a feeling I am only going to find my dream dirndl in the long to the ground length. What I actually want is just below the knee with another cm of petticoat showing.

If I find the dirdnl colours I want in a long dirndl, will it still work if I have the skirt and apron shortened, or is this somehow going to disrupt the flow of the skirt ie: long ones are made with more pleats than short ones, constructed differently?

Knowing very little about dressmaking, I am confused. And I think if I ask this in Angermaier or such they will be horrified that I want to cut up the dirndl or not understand anyway...

Thanks for any opinions, informed or otherwise!

Renia,
I remember the expression on the ladies faces at Angermaier when you only ask about wanting to shorten the apron

I say go for it if you find the one you like.

DDbug gave me a contact for a good seamstress. If I find it, I will pass it along, but it is over here by me.

I shortened my last dirndl from full length to just below the knee.
make sure to trim off the same width all the way round (I put mine on the ironing board (as tho I was ironing it) it was a lot easier than laying it flat on the ground) and it should be ok.

depends on the cut of the dirndl, I have a long one that would look awful short, its more of a vest top and with the plaid skirt, I think shortening it would be wrong. Alot of the longer skirts are a different material and I don't think they would look shortened.
You could always get one made or hit a few of the shops that have a larger selection. There is a new warehouse that opened on Feringastr by the Marktkauf, its quiet large.

Yes, and that was last year, when I already had the knee length dirndl and only wanted that particular apron to go with it (which I had shortened at a dressmaker round my corner). I had forgotten that!!!
Renia
@ Moonboot, I probably wouldn´t do it myself... (unless I buy one of those Tchibo sewing machines?)

@ Carm, thanks for the advice, I will have to look around a bit more and might dare ask at the shops what they think (but be prepared for looks of incredulousness).

Renia, it's a quick job to do, if you want me to do it let me know...
