It's that time of year again. The Kocherlball will be the 15th of July - VERY early (or very late, depending on how you look at it

)
It starts at 06:00am at the Chinesischen Turm. Entry is free. If you have not already reserved a table, then you must get there very early (before 5am) to find a place.
The Kocherlball (or Cook's Ball) is an old Munich tradition where young service employees dance together around the Chinese Tower in the early morning. There are typically around 12 thousand people there.
It also gives you another chance to get your
dirndl and
lederhosen out

I think there are a couple threads from the last couple years. I will find them and post them here.
EDIT - here are the links to previous years
Munich Kocherlball @ Chinese Tower DDBug's description is A LOT better than mine - gives you more about the event tradition itself.
Kocherlball - Cooks Ball - Sunday 17.Jul.2005Here are a couple of pictures I took last year.

Yes, you must go early - if you get there between 5-5.30ish you might get lucky, but before 5am for sure. Especially if you have a group.
I remember riding my bike through Schwabing last year thinking "God, am I the only one up at this ungodly hour??" Then when I got to the beginning of the street that runs through the Englisher Garten - I saw more people and when you approach the tower itself at 5am, you are amazed at just how many people there are.
I could not find a German site, but am sure there is one out there. There is also usually a "rain date", but not sure when it is.

It's the Sunday after, but for the last who-knows-how-long, it's not been necessary to move the date. Have fun kids, I wish I could be there.

I shall be snoozing in bed at that time and dreaming of something other than a bunch of peeps in trachten drag hanging out before the rooster crows to get a table. You people are crazy!

TOP speach by OUR Lord Mayor focussing on the fact that the
KocherlBall is indicative of poor treatment of workers.
While DB is trying to get a peanuts deal with railway workers that play a huge part in making Munich the great place it is to live, I was mightily pleased.

Kocherlball PicsI think I now understand that bavarian word "Gaudi" - never seen munich people partying like that. Imagine having oktoberfest with just residents only! That was the full thing. Next year will certainly make the effort to get there at a respectable time

Sounds like a good time! Wish I would have known about it earlier : ( ah well next year I guess.
And Poots, I believe (could be completely wrong here) but Gaudi is actually from the Spanish arty type guy,
I finally understood when I saw some of his work in Barcelona! : ) oh it were Gaudi alright

Yeah, I can see it coming from Spain, but never in the German context have I ever really seen it happening before today
