My family is coming in a few weeks and I thought about going down to Garmisch for a day and combining a trip up the Zugspitze with a visit to the Linderhof Castle, and maybe a stroll around Oberammergau (if its worth it, its been awhile since I've been there). We'd be going with the train.

Has anyone done this trip before? Which order should we do things in? Is there some kind of kombi-ticket... like the BOB, Zugspitzbahn + bus to Linderhof and admission or something like that?
Thanks for any info!

Don't forget Ettal too. Not sure about getting to Ettal/Oberammergau/Linderhof by train - maybe it's a bus-ride to these places from Oberau.

Might be a lot to do all these things in one day, though.

Linderhof is very nice but you can spend a lot of time poking around there, same as Zugspitze - it takes some time getting to the top and taking in the scenery (plus the requisite beer at both places)
Agree with Pike that it is probably a big day out, but if your family is cool with that then it would be a very nice day out smile.gif

You need to take a bus to Linderhof:

The website also talks about admission prices, there is no mention of any combi tickets.

It is probably better to do a Garmisch day - lots to see and do there - Zugspitze, Partnachklamm, Eibsee, the little town itself is lovely with good food options and then maybe a castles day - Neuschwanstein/Hohenschwangau/Linderhof and Oberammergau (but then you might get castle-d out - although each are unique and lovely in their own way).

thanks for the replies so far...
most of my family has already been to Neuschwanstein (atleast once) so we are skipping it... and any kind of hiking is out of the question because my mom has a bad knee and broke her ankle 2 months ago which is still swollen and painful at times. And they are used to long days when they come over here... kind of like Europe in 10 days. So I figured we'd go up the Zugspitze, enjoy the scenes, drink a beer, go back down, stop at eibsee, check it out, and then somehow head to the Linderhof...need to figure out opening times though to see what we should do first I guess.

There is a lot of walking (uphill and stairs) at Linderhof, the grounds itself.
I totally understand about a broken ankle being an issue as I went through it myself a few years back, don't think I could have done Linderhof, certainly not after two months. But if you only want to see the castle itself inside then it might be ok for your mom.

I would do Linderhof first, these places get very busy in the summer, Linderhof isn't very big but the queues get enormous. Get there before all the coach parties get there.

Keep in mind that the Zugspiste is possibly the biggest rip off in Germany at 47 euros per person for a return trip.. be prepared for it.. it's actually 10 euros cheaper in the Winter, and with this pass you can go up and down as many times as you like..

It is actually only 5€ cheaper in the winter but I agree with you, it is a total rip off

Another, more authentic, beautiful castle to look at is in Burghausen.

I really really recommend a hike around Eibsee, a trail goes around the whole lake and there is a nice lakeside Gasthaus to get a meal and a drink:

A fantastic spot in fall for the colors of the foliage as well.

yes i know the trip up to the Zugspitze is expensive, but I feel its something that should be done...my family has been over a few times and we still haven't been to Garmisch, so I figured its worth it. And seriously, my family is not made up of hikers. Well, my immedietly family could probably get by aslong as its flat (see post above about mom falling apart), but my other relatives that are going to be with me are not exactly outdoorsy nature people.

o and with a train ticket, the trip up to the zugspitze costs 42€ not 47€
