Lightning strikes at Olympiapark injure 12

Three of the people injured severely

Three students sheltering under a chestnut tree were severely hurt when lightning struck the tree. Six others who were close to the tree were also hurt and had to be treated in hospital. A further three were briefly treated on site. The lightning had an estimated 11 KiloAmpere, quite low – average is 80 Kilo-Ampere.

Reportedly the Olympia Tower is at fault – it draws lightning to it, but not all of it hits the tower, some hit just close by, as in this case.

Makes you wonder what would happen if lightning struck into Tollwood.

When I was a child I was told not to shelter under a tree during a thunderstorm, for that very reason. However,it appears that they weren't sheltering, they were just under it when the storm arrived sudddenly, it wasn't even raining, very nasty.

I live a block away from OlympiaPark. I heard that lightning/thunder blast when it hit, flipped my wig back.

Yeh, I live near there too and on that night the thunder was some of the loudest I've ever heard..

Not only do trees attract lightning... but when hit all the water in the tree goes instantly from liquid to gas form, which has roughly 1000x the volume... BOOM! Wood shrapnel bits everywhere, it is very bad.

Nothng even remotely exciting as that EVER happens in Paderborn.

I live in the Olympic Village and yes, it was an amazing bolt of lightning, but the storm was nothing compared to what you get on the Highveld in South Africa. Those are truly memorable experiences. As for the Olympic Tower, it's no where near too where the people got zapped. It's at least a 2km from there. They were on the football fields of the Zentralsportanlage of the technical university. Having said that, they were both extremely unlucky and luck at the same time. Unlucky to have been struck which is unusual to say the least, lucky that it hadn't started raining yet because then they would've truly have been fucked as well as the people surrounding them.

When I was younger (maybe 11 or so) the husband of a family friend of ours was hit and killed by lightning, not sure if it happened in Paderborn, but that's where they lived as far as I remember. She was about to have their baby too, very sad story.

It seems we've been trumped! <shakes fist at clouds> Munich not good enough for you eh?
sarabyrd
Nope, Ulysses, I still contend that 12 July 1984 cannot and will not ever be trumped by anything.
