So I went down to
Günther Murphy's Irish pub tonight to go do the quiz... and we were greeted by a big sign on the door saying that after 16 years the pub has closed it's doors for the last time.
Anyone know why?! It seems so sudden for it to be shut.
Where are we going to drink now!?
Update: Official word has been posted...QUOTE (Günther Murphy @ Jun 26 2007, 3:39 pm)

After 16 years in business we have closed. Thanks to the staff, they are a great team and have been fantastic since the news broke. Thanks again. ...

Really? Bloody hell.
Surely me and Grinner going off the drink at the same time can't have caused that much of a ripple in the booziverse?
Nothing on their website saying anything.

We kinda half thought/hoped someone was taking the piss but looks pretty genuine.

Hope nothing bad's happened...but i just don't get why it shut so suddenly and without warning!

This is odd. I had no idea The Devil Himself spent so much money in there! Seriously though, I thought that place always did a very good trade. Can't imagine there won't be new owners in there soon if the current owners are simply just selling up.

Gunthers is here 16 years so this is an ex pat landmark event. This place actually means alot to some people and remember that the Toytown tuesday nights have been visiting here for a few years now.

I am really going to miss this place. Was absolutely shocked to find the sign on the door tonight after 7 years drinking there!!
Where will we go for karaoke???
Not sure what the story is at all. Had a big Gaelic football bash in there on Saturday night and then wham bam it's closed with no warning. Strange!! Do the bar staff actually know they're closed???
All I say is thanks to all the bar staff and beer fairies over the years, you served us well and I hope you'll all be looked after and find a job somewhere as good as Murphys!!

Conjecture?
Is that spreading rumours? Ive heard stuff but none of it is here in words on this fourm. Thats conjecture but fact is fact and the gaff is closed. Two notices, one in the window of each door, in case one isnt enough!!

The bits about as to why it's closed? That'd be the conjecture part...excuse me for allowing for some random subjective pedantry because some friends lost their jobs. Arpswaddetry. Been drinking there since 1992, watched 4 World Cups there, very sorry to see it go and sorrier to see some friends suddenly out of jobs.

Wait a big buggering hell of a minute there! GM's has closed? Nooooooooooooooooooooooo!
That is one of the saddest bits of news I have heard in a long time. I am genuinely gutted for everyone involved
...if it is true, that is... I will wait and see whether it is genuine or not.

i dont understand why all the surprise.
why have they closed? erm, the same reason as why 95% of all businesses close. lack of profit i would imagine.
had nobody noticed that business had been declining down there over the last few years? place was noticeably quieter on the occasions i visited.
its been a steady slide pretty much since
kilians opened five years ago.
in the early nineties most of the drinkers were blue collar workers from the uk. theyd show up after a day of panel beating at bmw, drink ten pints, then head back to their apartment hotels. since the turn of the century the average drinker is an IT contractor working at O2. they drink less, and less often.
its a shame indeed. but all good things must come to an end.
surprising though, as mentioned, that they didn't have a last minute farewell party. perhaps the management are tired and depressed and don't feel that closure is any reason to celebrate.
a change of ownership might work. with refreshed enthusiasm and a streamlined business model. the location and concept still has potential i reckon. i cant imagine it being anything other than an irish pub.

More conjecture, no facts are known apart from it is closed and some of us have good pals who are now jobless.
Please - a little tact until the facts are clear, because anything else is just plain old guff.
Am sure a post from the (former)
GMs team will come soon enough.

Thanks to the staff who kept us well oiled. This is a sad day, the second Irish pub that saw Scogs and me get together eight years ago has shut down.
Special thanks to tuca, the ever-smiling beer-fairy.

Tell me it aint so… lots of fond memories, a great place to watch a sporting event.
Maybe it will re-open called “Günther Schmidts soft drinks Karaoke Bar seeing as it’s always full of locals not drinking or sharing a non-alcoholic punch dreaming they will be the next popstar.
But like the Murphy’s… I’m not bitter.

bugger. very sad news indeed
although the poster above is right, l'm an IT contactor for O2 and 3 pints is about all l drink at the moment...
will miss that place bigtime, especially sunday night karaoke
for big sporting events you couldn't really move in there
all the best to all the staff there - especially tuca the beer fairy
the place did seem to be quiet recently, but you'd have thought that being so close to leopoldstr it would get a fair bit of custom
but it's all caipis and mojitos these days
shame

Wow, i'm shocked.
Murphy's was the very first pub I went to upon arriving in Munich in 1999. I've had many a drunken night and met many great people in there. Good Times. And saw many of England's football failures in there. Bad Times. But anyway, Munich won't quite be the same without it.

I, quite literally, am devastated. I'll hold fire on any opinions until more is said 'officially', but

Crazy that they wouldn't have had a closing down party.. that would have brought in thousands of euros at very least.. I mean, what are they going to do with all their stock anyway? Has to be a logical explanation behind this.

Could be lots of things, but even if you do have stock creditors may prefer to take the stock and indeed the business as a going concern, rather than an empty pub where there's no booze and the last punters have robbed all the furniture.
Anyway, I'm still hoping that it'll survive relatively unchanged. Just like Dangeross my first ever pint in MUC was in
GMs, just two or three hours after I arrived. Good times. It's also where I first met Tif and DW. Bad times.

I don't think people being upset that there was no closing party is a reflection on the staff that worked there. No need for calls for sensitivity.
Günther was never my favourite place to drink, but it is an icon and will be missed if it doesn't resurrect in some similar form.

And just like Dangeross and Jimbo, Murphy's was also my first Munich pub. I walked through its doors for the first time on Tuesday, 26 July 2005, five days after I'd moved to Germany. A few of the TTers I met that night are still good friends of mine to this day.
So GM's holds a special place in my heart as well, and I'm sad to hear that it might be gone forever.

I think my very first TT meetup was in
GMs as well. I seem to remember meeting Jimbo and 3Lions in there for a football match. I suppose that might have been Euro 2004 in Portugal. My first 6 Nations was spent in GMs in 2000, I seem to remember watching Wales thump Ireland. To be honest, I don't remember much of the details cos I always seemed to leave the place bladdered.

Its one of my favourite pubs in Munich - love the cocktails. My mate who works there only found out yesterday that it has closed down. And he didn't find out from the boss - he just decided to pop in to say hi and like 'Just another name' saw the notice on the door. Its a bit out of order really!
Jimbo
Jun 26 2007, 9:49 am
That would be right OG - can't remember which match, but do indeed remember meeting you for the first time, and being distinctly unconvinced that Touch was a better sport than football. I still am, but I still remember the debate.
My first pint was Sept. 27th 2003, Diana served me IIRC and I didn't know a soul so just watched Sky Sports on my own and went home. I'd been in town a total of about 2 hours when I first walked in the door.

weird man...
i owe a hell of a lot to
GMs and the customers there. worked there for the first year i was in germany, learned german, got tips, ate and drank.
dont know really what to say, just thanks to all of yous, working there helped me settle in munich, paid my rent and allowed me to stay in germany with my missus. who hates me right now, but still.

Since we're discussing firsts.
My first time was long before I met anyone from TT on a date with a German guy. I think he wanted to take me somewhere where I would feel at home, I thought it was too crowded and noisy for a first date. I don't even remember his name, I wonder what happened to him ...

So it seems as if this is true. This is devastating and a huge blow for schwabing, imho. First drink in Munich back in 1999 (I think it was with Dangeross), met so many people at the place and many of those have remained very good friends down the years. Met my long term girlfriend there at the bar... I'm really lost for words.
I'll be giving
GMs a minute of silence at 12 o'clock to think back on the good times.
