Hello all
I signed up for an upgrade to 6mg DSL from the lovely
T-COM folks. Will the speedport W501 V detect the faster speed or do I need a dowload / new firmware etc etc.
Ta
I hope my local exchange has the kit and that I'm close enough (but I 'm sure they have checked)

It will (should) detect it when the line re-synchronises following the upgrade, but it's always best to power-cycle it the day AFTER the confirmed upgrade date, just to be sure. The W501V has proved notoriously unreliable and has had a number of firmware upgrades. You should upgrade firmware in any case (even before the line change). Current firmware is version 28.04.08 from 26.03.2007 and can be downloaded from
here. Among other improvements this firmware adds support for DSL16000 (ADSL2+)

If they confirmed the change in writing then you should have it. They check the line before the confirmation goes out. The change can take place at any time up to midnight on the confirmed day of changeover. Until after that time they won't accept a fault call. Given the current post-strike backlog you'll be lucky to get through anyway.

Hi YL6
The letter says it should have been done yesterday (21st) and I would expect them to check as you said.
I'm looking at the "status" window of the config browser and it still shows 1565 kb/s.
I'll wait until Monday to call (I can't face it now)
Cheers again

Well what a suprise...here's the reply to my question as to when my upgrade would take place.
Bear in mind I already have 2mg. and that no-one in
T-Com seems to have used the public web tool / utility to ascertain whether a landline can accomodate DSL
Dear Madam/Sir,
Thank you very much for your e-mail.
The package Call & Surf Comfort includes the DSL 6000.
However, we are not in the position to realize the top
bandwidth at your place referring to the different length
and features of the line.
We hope to find DSL supply in July 2006 for your area.
However, the bandwidth offered can only be up to 384 kbit/s.
The concrete deadline for realization of DSL in your home
area cannot be said at the moment, sorry.
Yours sincerely,
Gudrun Klippe

When did they actually send this letter?
Note that the "public tool" simply estimates line length from your home to the exchange and estimates potential speed and capability. Many other things affect actual speed including cable routing, connections in between and interference on the line. The speed they finally offer you results from physical testing of the capabilities of the line itself.

Hi YL6
They sent this reply when I asked (on 22nd) when I would get the upgrade (promised for 21st)
I know that other factors effect (I was in B.T. for 18yrs) I know that doesnt mean much !!
My current link is "2Mg" and it does reach 1.5 at times. So this bloke is talking rubbish.
I'll have to wait for an exchange u/g or move closer to the exchange or to Munich.

So how did they come to offer you 6MBit in the first place?

It is part of a package they are pushing (surf and call comfort) at a 5€ discount. I asked in the shop if
6mb was possible because I live in the sticks and they said yes, which of course they would.
As I said, If the operative would have checked, they would have seen immediatly it wasn't possible, but then, no commission,
I need to trawl through the bill now to see if it is saving me anyway, in which case its not too bad.
If its costing me more then I'll have to cancel, all fun and games eh!
