Is anyone interested in doing this? We'll need a mixture of native-English and native-German speakers in the Nürnberg area. A good starting number is 4, but we can grow from there. I hear it's a great way to practise and gain confidence in German, which I need desperately!

For those not in the know, the idea is to meet regularly, preferably weekly, in a casual setting (like a pub - the origin of the Stammtisch, I believe! - or a cafe, restaurant, etc), and then simply chat with each other. For the benefit of everyone, it's often good to do half-and-half with the languages - so for example, an hour completely in German (for the benefit of the English speakers), and an hour completely in English (for the benefit of the German speakers).

Any interest?
ladybug
wonderful idea, sammcd! I believe that makes us two native english-speakers now, and you can possibly provide a native german. Want to set a date for this week to start things off?
mustlovedogz
Hi Sam,

Obviously you can count me in if you need me. Just let me know.
sammcd
Fabulous! Now all we need is some German speakers. (ladybug - The German speaker that I know is strictly NOT invited). smile.gif

Any other takers...?

mustlovedogz - maybe you could ask if your German friends/tandems are interested?
Tini83
Hello,

my name is Christine. I am a German girl aged 23. I go to school (BOS) in Nürnberg and want (must!!!) refresh my english. I am going to write my Abitur in 1 year.

Soon we are going to write many important tests. But in 3 weeks, I will have time.

So, ;-) I hope you understood what I said.

Und jetzt noch ein Satz auf Deutsch ;-) : Ich würde mich freuen, wenn wirklich ein Stammtisch zusammenkäme.

If we need anouther "species" called German, I can invite a friend of mine.

So, have a nice week.

Christine
mustlovedogz
Yup, I will email them and ask them.
schotty
Hi Sam,

Sounds good!
You can count me in - sometimes feel nowadays i need the English practice as much as the German :-)

cheers

By the way, there's a great website called www.sprachduo.de for meeting language partners in this area. Because it's set up to be one-on-one it might not be as fun, but it's still quite useful. I've met 9 different people in the last few weeks, so I know they're desperate for native English speakers! You can decide with each person where/ when/ how often to meet, and how much time you want to spend speaking German/ English/ other languages.

If the stammtisch gets started, count me in too. My language school does this once a month for our students to practice their English in a casual environment (at an Irish Pub so they have to use English!) and it's always fun.
sammcd
Thanks for all the interest, folks!

Looks like we have plenty of native English speakers, and it sounds like you all have enough German to bring me up to speed even without the native Germans! So far Tina is the only native German to reply, and she's not available for a couple of weeks. Perhaps we'll just have to make do ourselves, until we can round up a few Germans to join us.

Can we get some proposals for dates and places, perhaps starting next week? I'm pretty flexible (as am currently living the supposedly "easy" life of the unemployed), so am open to suggestions.

Er...I'd better go now... Must dig out my German books and start brushing up...
february
Hi there,

here I am, the (probably) still missing German native speaker. I like the idea of a English/German Stammtisch and I would like to join you. I was looking for a "Sprachtandem-Partner" and Jane, a friend of yours, Sam, told me of your project. If you already have a date and a location, just let me know. I'll be there.

Best wishes,

Manu

So let's try for next week some time. How about Wednesday, July 4th at 7:30pm, O'Sheas Irish Pub for the first meeting and then we can decide if we want to move it? Just a suggestion to get things going. I may also be able to convince some of my German colleagues to come, once we set a day and time.
february
Wednesday is good. I'll be there a little later, about 8 or 8.30. Thus it would be great if you DON'T change the location :-)

C U

Manu
sammcd
I'll be there! See you all then! I'll try to recruit a few others on my way... (hopefully not strangers!) smile.gif
Lexicon
OK, dumb question but wouldn't we do better having a german discussion night at a German kneipe instead of an English Pub?
ladybug
Thank you for pointing this out Lexicon, that was thought of, but I figured most of us know OSheas, and at the first meeting we can decide whether or not we want to continue to meet there or switch to a different pub. Although considering the word for beer/bier is universal, does it matter much if we are in an Irish or German pub?!
sammcd
Also, this is a German AND English conversation group. Half of the time, we will be speaking English for our German friends - so the Irish pub is quite suitable! If you are coming, can you please PM me with the number of people you are bringing. If there are quite a few of us, I will book a table.

Right now, I've counted 6 people from this forum, not including the friends that some of us may bring. I'll book for about 10 (I know, so optimistic!) unless y'all tell me otherwise... smile.gif
february
Hi folks,

it was a very nice evening yesterday. I enjoyed it quite much and I am really surprised about your good German language skills. Nevertheless I hope urgently you will need this Stammtisch for practising still for a long time...

see you next week

february
sammcd
Feb - glad you liked it. I had fun too. We have a few more people coming next week, so I'll try to remember to book a table this time.

For everyone else - we've decided on weekly meeting for the Stammtisch. Last night worked well - we have approximately one hour in English conversation, and one hour in German conversation. After that, it's a free for all - whichever language makes you comfortable! Details are:

Every Wednesday
7.30 pm
O'Shea's Irish Pub
Nürnberg

See you then!

Sam
Tini83
Hi all,

I'm free now. I did the last test last week so I will come on Wednesday to the Stammtishc and hope I understand you. ;-) But this is the trick of having such a Stammtisch.

Have a nice week.

CU Wednesday.Christine

Reminder to All-

We'll meet again tonight (11.July) at O'Sheas to practice our English/German. Last week was a lot of fun and I actually did learn some new German! Look for the green Stammtisch signs that sammcd made for us.
Orient lady
Hi there,

I'm new register but already got to know some people from the group. rolleyes.gif I'm very interested to join the language practice. Looking forward to see you next Wednesday.
Balk64
Are we meeting tonight?
sammcd
Yep - we're still meeting every Wednesday - I'll keep you updated on any changes! We are desperate for native English speakers, so please come along if you're free.

I've now started a blog, and all information and updates will be posted there (but I'll also add reminders in this forum). Here is the address:

Meg_s
Is it ok to come if you do more listening than talking? My German is pretty limited, I can speak a little but there is only so much I could say, but I WANT TO LEARN!!
sammcd
Yes of course - please come along. My German is pretty crap, so I do a LOT of listening! We need more English speakers - the Germans aren't happy that there are too many of them, and not enough of us (we ARE in Germany, after all!) Anyway, it'd be great to have someone to contribute to the English side of things too...

Same time and place - Wednesday at O'Sheas, 7.30pm. If the weather is nice, we'll be outside in the beer garden. Look for the blue or green signs on the table.

I can't book a table in the beer garden, so we just have to squeeze around others until we get our own table. Seemed to work okay last time!
ranamarie
Hi there,

My name's Rana and I'm also interested in improving my German. I'll definately try to make it tonight if that's ok.

Hopefully see you tonight!

Hi there,

I only just found this forum on google by accident, I'm Jay 26 lived in Nuremberg for just over a year now.

Are you meeting tomorrow? (1/8) if so I will try to come along I speak German and English and would be very willing to help people out in both Languages, more interested in getting to know people really (from a selfish point of view) but if i can help people with there German/English on the way I'm happy to do so. Won't be able to stay to late though I start work fairly early.
Jay-O
hmm ok can't seem to find an edit button, sorry to spam sad.gif

Just talked to my other half she is going to come as well as she wants to try and improve her English.
ladybug
Hi Everyone- just a reminder, we will be at O'Sheas as usual tomorrow night and we need some English speakers! Our leader, sammcd, had to make a short trip, so I don't think she will be there. I'll bring some kind of Stammtisch sign just in case, might not be blue though! Hope you can all make it!
johndonov
Hi

I am a native English speaker and would love to improve my German. I just noticed this topic and I was wondering whether the language group had been set up, and if so where it meets, and is there room for one more?Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
mustlovedogz
Yes JohnDonov, been going for weeks now. Just come along. Where were you last night? smile.gif We look forward to meeting you next week. Same place, same time. Check out the web site www.nuernbergstammtisch.blogspot.com

So... I just got back to Nuremberg after visiting my brother in Shanghai for quite a while. I'm probably going to be dragging my roommate Lexicon with me down to O'Sheas tonight. Hope to see y'all there.
mustlovedogz
Hi All, unfortunately, the person with the Green table signs isn't coming tonight.

If anyone reads this who happens to have a sheet of green or blue card to scribble a basic sign would they be so kind as to obliged as I am unable to leave the house this afternoon to aquire some for this purpose.

I believe the square table on opposite side of the bar from entrance has been booked for tonight.

See you then.
hilu
Hi folks,

just discovered this thread here. Will you be meeting tonight, and is there still some space for two Germans (one of which desperately seeking to improve her English, the other somewhat more fluent)?
MadAxeMurderer
I'm going for a curry at 19:30, but will probably come along around between 20:30 and 21:00.

Last week there were was only one German speaker, so you'de be well welcome.
mustlovedogz
Hello Hilu. We look forward to meeting you tonight. I looks like it might be outside, depending on table size. I might be lucky though as i will be there from 6.30. Look for the Stammtisch sign.

See you all later.
SarahLewisBennion
Hello all!

I have just moved to Nuremberg (from England) and was wondering if your regular meet-up sessions are still going on? They sound like fun! I´m twenty years old and doing an internship with Siemens.

Tschüss!

Sarah.
SarahLewisBennion
P.S. I am a student studying French and German in England so I already speak some German but am looking to further improve!
mustlovedogz
Hi Sarah, yes, still going. Come along on Wednesday, look for the signs on the tables, but we will watch out for you too. Check out the web site www.nuernbergstammtisch.blogspot.com
SarahLewisBennion
Great! See you Wednesday! Sarah.
adamstead
mind if I pop along too?
ladybug
Hi everyone- I'm not sure our blue and green signs will make it tonight, so if you are new, look for a large white sign, homemade, with silly blue highlighter writing! see you there!
Seby
I will be moving to Nurnberg shortly (from Ansbach) and am very interested in joining the group! Please keep me posted!
february
Hello everybody,

I' m sorry that I couldn't come last week. It was the birthday of my daughter. Do you meet this Wednesday even if it's holiday?

See you,

february
ladybug
I think we should take the week off from Stammtisch, everyone enjoy their holiday (Oct. 3rd). And the following week come back with some new ideas about where we might be able to move the Stammtisch to. It's been pointed out that O'Sheas is a little expensive for drinks, and that the food options could be better. So try to think of some places with good food, a somewhat varied menu, reasonable prices, and good atmosphere. And, if you want me to keep coming, someplace close to the Hauptbahnhof!

Also try to encourage some more participation- especially from Germans! The past few weeks have been basically a meeting of English-speaking TTers. Fun, but not the point of Deutsch-English language practice!
Fchu
Last Wednesday (October 10th) those who were at the language practice group at O'Sheas decided that this week's group will meet at Der Rotes Bar this Wednesday (October 17th) instead of at O'Sheas. The bar is up the street just before you turn into the cobble lane that leads to O'Sheas riverside stand, and it's only a few doors down from the actual O'Sheas Pub.
Martin1981
Hello,

my name is Martin. I am a native German speaker. I am interested in improving my English and
meet new people. Would it be possible to join your group?
johndonov
Hi
The meetings of the conversation group are now in Die Rote bar, the group usually sits at a table near the entrance but there will be a green sign up tonight, so if any newcomers wish to join in we should be fairly easy to spot. Because it is Halloween tonight there may not be many attendees but I am definitely going.
RedSox
Hello,

If you are still having these meetings, I am interested in joining your next meeting. I originally moved to Germany a year ago, and have not had a chance to concentrate on studying German until now. Thanks.
Lexicon
So are you guys actually speaking any German yet? Sorry i haven't been there. I was sick for two weeks and then just totally forgot this past Wednesday.

BTW, Jon, thanks for the invite. Sure I'd gladly take you up on the gay little coffee tour. biggrin.gif
