I just lost my grandma a couple of months ago and since I was here in Germany, I couldn't make it back for the funeral in Oregon.
I'm sorry for your loss. We have the memories and I still smile when thinking about all of them. Nothing can take those away.

Grinner, that's very powerful. Thanks for posting this. I love this version http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sp0ccQVy1og because she's singing it with Bocelli and I have it on one of his CDs in my collection. Truly magical!

Hayley westenra - Dark Waltz...gets me every time.
right before I flew over here from Calgary they played this on the radio, (teddy bear) I remember hearing this man calling into the station at the end of the song complaining that he couldn't get out of his car to go into work cause he was crying. The announcer admited that she hadn't listened to the song herself as it played, since she knew she had to do the weather straight afterwords and didn't want to be blubbering.
Now I have no distinct real reason for going into floods of tears at this, but every time the Commonwealth Games come around, the Norn Iron amateur boxers take to the ring and have Danny Boy sung in lieu of an anthem, after Barry McGuigan's fashion. They are crying, I'm crying, there's not a dry eye to be seen. Danny Boy
Surprised that this hasn't come up - Elvis sings one of the saddest tunes of all time. You want misery? I'll give you misery. Old Shep

Mike and the Mechanics, In The Living Years Because I grew up apart from my father and there would have been so much to share. We had a wonderful day together just before he died, but there could have been so many more ...

Ok, Grinner, here's one of my favorite songs that move me beyond tears and speaks to my soul. It's Papa Can You Hear Me. This bring back the fondest memories of my life with my father. My second favorite would be A House is Not a Home by Streisand and Burt Bacharach
Jason Micheal Carroll - Alyssa Lies, its such a sad song about child abuse.

I think some things are too sad to make songs about. When I was married I remember looking over the bank statements with tears in my eyes. I keep copies of these and look at them when ever my life begins to drift down that road again. It is a bit like sniffing smelling salts – bingo – a very good reality check. I do remember seeing Elvis singing “Are you lonesome tonight live making some adlib lyrics about such things. Another tear inducer was the time I was doing some horse branding at a ranch and the horse somehow at lightening speed got his leg through the horizontal bars and kicked me with full fury between my legs. Definitely not something to write a song about.

We dont have a recording of this - but when at Steeleye Span concerts in December 2004 (Buxton) & May 2006 (Oxford) Maddy Prior introduced a song that she said she had been singing since she was 17 "I live not where I love" it has the side effect of making my (German) wife burst into tears...
Collected Maddy's, Peter's & Ken's autographs on the cover of Bloody Men last November.

Bridge Over Troubled Water by Simon and Garfunkel or by Elvis does it for me. It doesn't matter how many times I hear it the words sound so meaningful and never corny plus the music is pretty powerful stuff.

The stupidity of war and mans’ pride – the sacrifice of a nations youth and the pain caused to their families. The futile destruction. The freeing of a whole people from slavery (being bought and breed for manual labour and to be sold like cattle). The heroism of man. Just the words of this song can bring me to tears and sung with a full musical backing and as an American negro spiritual is awe inspiring.
The Battle Hymn of the Republic
Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored, He has loosed the fateful lightening of His terrible swift sword His truth is marching on. Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on.
ln the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea, With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me: As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free, While God is marching on.
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on.

A friend of mine was killed in a car crash at 31, a very sudden, pointless and random loss of a top bloke in his prime. His mother asked me to play this song at his funeral.
Political opinions on this war and patriotism aside, it's so sad how many spouses are currently without their partners, and how many kids without their dads and moms. I love this song (the regular version)!
I think this has been played at all the funerals i've been to. We all sang it at my Aunty's funeral more than ten years ago and it still makes me cry sometimes. My mother cries everytime she hears it.
& these two don't make me cry but they sure give me goosebumps
Seasons in the sun would have to be mine i had a really bad accident and nearly died.Mother and Father played it to me in the I.C.U.when i was fighting for my life.Brings tears to my eyes now as i am writing.
Now Comes the Night by Rob Thomas, one of my all time favorites, just because it is so beautiful and haunting and filled with longing.

Funny, when I read this thread the first time, I couldn't think of any song in particular. I just realized this morning that, for me, it depends on my mood and the song in question.
So, I was on the U-Bahn this morning, mulling my life over, pondering my current situation in life, when Carry On My Wayward Son by Kansas came on my iPod. The first verse came on... As I was listening to the words, I almost lost it completely:
Once I rose above the noise and confusion Just to get a glimpse beyond this illusion I was soaring ever higher But I flew too high
Though my eyes could see I still was a blind man Though my mind could think I still was a mad man I hear the voices when I'm dreaming I can hear them say
Carry on my wayward son There'll be peace when you are done Lay your weary head to rest Don't you cry no more
I know that the song is about drug addiction, but the words just seem to fit me somehow at this moment.

Cool, Cool River & Kodachrome by Paul Simon - not because they're sad, but the music's just overwhelmingly good
Love Song & Tiny Dancer by Elton John, but that's a given

I used to sing "Tiny Dancer" to my little brother when he was six months old. That was 34 years ago, and now he has a Tiny Dancer daughter to hold up and watch her kick her little legs (and huge feet).
Recently, Jim Croce
Memories can be friends, They can take you to a place That you never thought you'd be again, And take you to a face That you never, ever thought That you would see again.
It reminds me of my best friend Oksana who died in 1995 four months after moving from Munich to Prague, two weeks before I was going to visit her.

I have to agree on the tearjerking factor for the Johnny Cash version of 'Hurt'. I cried for twenty full minutes after I saw the video for the first time. Absolutely amazing.
Somewhere over the Rainbow by Eva Cassidy, haunting.

More than just a tear, this song reduces me to a mess every time...hence why I never listen to it. A country song, so of course cheesy and depressing, but I can relate to it on many levels. The last verse is the one that sends me over the edge.
QUOTE
Through the back window of a '59 wagon I watched my best friend Jamie slippin' further away I kept on waving 'till I couldn't see her And through my tears, I asked again why we couldn't stay Mama whispered softly, Time will ease your pain Life's about changing, nothing ever stays the same
And she said, How can I help you to say goodbye? It's OK to hurt, and it's OK to cry Come, let me hold you and I will try How can I help you to say goodbye?
I sat on our bed, he packed his suitcase I held a picture of our wedding day His hands were trembling, we both were crying He kissed me gently and then he quickly walked away I called up Mama, she said, Time will ease your pain Life's about changing, nothing ever stays the same
And she said, How can I help you to say goodbye? It's OK to hurt, and it's OK to cry Come, let me hold you and I will try How can I help you to say goodbye?
Sitting with Mama alone in her bedroom She opened her eyes, and then squeezed my hand She said, I have to go now, my time here is over And with her final word, she tried to help me understand Mama whispered softly, Time will ease your pain Life's about changing, nothing ever stays the same
And she said, How can I help you to say goodbye? It's OK to hurt, and it's OK to cry Come, let me hold you and I will try How can I help you to say goodbye?
How can I help you to say goodbye?

The late great Luke Kelly singing "Scorn not his simplicity"
See him stare Not recognizing the kind face That only yesterday he loved The loving face Of a mother who can't understand what she's been guilty of
How she cried tears of happiness The day the doctor told her it's a boy Now she cries tears of helplessness And thinks of all the things he can't enjoy
Man, the really sad music at the end of each episode of "The Hulk" totally makes me melancholy. So does the sad version of the Rocky theme tune. Well sad. Poor old Rocky. What else? erm. Oh yeah, the bit in Godfather Part III, where Michael's son plays the Godfather theme tune on a guitar, with lyrics. Deep man, deep.

If this song doesnt make you cry, it will certainly be playing in your head the rest of the day, as it will in mine!
Just when everything's in order and good, things fall apart Just when life should be resolving I'm back at the beginning, And it comes back to the heart ... I'm not really sad ... I'm not running, I'm looking ... Did I tell you I've saved all your letters and cards ... There's just nothing left for me to do here but unhook the stars ... Do you remember when I told you all that I could and it seemed like too much ... Well I was living your life hoping you'd never fall ... If I held on tight enough ... And letting go now is like a passport to anywhere ... With time on my hands I can make a new start ... I just didn't want to stay here and unhook the stars I just didn't want to stay here and unhook the stars Don't worry for me it's just I'm inspired Waiting in the wings made me drunk with possibility It rivals my memories ...

Then there´s that song about the valley people killing the mountain people for their treasure in the cave, and it is a paper that says "peace on earth".
"Tell Laura I love her"
"Honey" -- tho I still don´t know what she died of.
Then there´s that song about the valley people killing the mountain people for their treasure in the cave, and it is a paper that says "peace on earth".
song is One Tin Soldier, sang it in grade school choir for Rememberance day.
And One Tin Soldier rides away sitting here singing it now, Ruthie should I call you and sing it to you?
makes me think of another song we sang in choir 'Let there be Peace on Earth' also a tear jerker,
just like Sarabeth by Lonestar- about a girl with Cancer going to the Prom I will Remember You- by Sara McLaughlin
First time for me hearing this song. But I found this comment interesting from the comments on YouTube regarding this song. "This was the track back in the early 80s to slash your wrists to after losing a girlfriend."
