Don't want to worry you good people in Munich, but from my current vantage point about 20 km north of the city, I see a very ominous, dark leaden-grey bank of cloud moving in from the west. In fact, it's getting darker by the minute. Birds are panicking. Something pretty nasty is on the way. Doesn't seem to have hit Munich yet, at least I can see the Hypo-Haus at Effnerplatz which looks from here as if the sun is still shining on it, but I think that may not last much longer. Doom is approaching.

This has been our warning, and man did we get it here in Forchheim. Weather alarms are still ringing.

It abbsolutely RAGED! Hail about 2cm in diameter, and absoltely pelting! The neighbouring open balconies have almost all lost their furniture. Wind was blowing in from the South.

Thought that our windows were gonna go.

Oops! That was loud!

You should try sitting on a roof when this lot creeps up on you!! I almost shat meself!
bluedave
Pissing down in Ottobrunn and black. Beer garden looks out later. sad.gif

Out here in Garching, very low-hanging clouds racing across the sky at a phenomenal speed, against a backdrop of higher, angry-looking clouds. Well, that was a few minutes ago. Visibility now down to about 100 metres, rain pelting down, a bit of thunder and lightning but not too dramatic yet. Wind blowing a gale.
Punchbear
The hail is literally like golfballs.

fletch
ya just lost sat tv here in center of Munich. guess (or hope) it is just visibility and not anything else.
GreenTea
Storm seems to be easing off here now, but sky still quite dark, and thunder and lightning rolling around now. I love a good storm. biggrin.gif

@Punchbear: Show me hailstones the size of tennis balls, and I'll be impressed: The apocalyptic hailstorm of 1984
Punchbear
That's impressive. Somewhere, out there, someone has some 23 year-old hailstones the size of tennis balls in their freezer. I wonder what they'd go for on eBay smile.gif
NJDQ
Thunder and lightening seems to have eased but the rain is UNBELIEVABLE!
bluedave
It's all eased off a good bit in Haidhausen now and Sky is back. smile.gif

During the midst of it (I'm in Schwabing), it sounded like lightning had hit something and made it explode!

Yes, I wish I'd had the presence of mind to keep some. People in other parts of Munich only got golf balls, and they think I'm exaggerating, but I swear I saw them with my own eyes! I think East Bogenhausen, where I was, was right at the epicentre of the storm, and it was pretty scary.
The Beaver
It's raining harder than I have ever seen it rain here and the wind is really getting violent! I'm kind of a weather geek, so I'm pretty much enjoying it. My dog, on the other hand, won't get out from under my feet. I'm getting the impression that he doesn't like thunder and lightning even though he's been through it many times before. It must be violent the violent variety that tweaks him a bit.

Well, I'm off to brave the weather and go out to dinner with some friends. This will be a good test of my new rain coat as we are walking to the restaurant. I hope me being gone doesn't scar my dog for life. The kids have to grow up sometime, however smile.gif

My hair is allergic to humidity. I got the fizzies bad and that ain't good sad.gif .
The Beaver
Walking the 1/2 km home from the restaurant, it was as if I was directly in line with a stream of piss from a humpback whale who was farting lightning.

Yeah, so I was never good with similes, but damn, it was some wicked weather and it's still raging outside.

There is so much static in the air and it's so humid that my German Sheppard/Huskie mutt now looks like a poodle. That's frizzy biggrin.gif

Hasn't anyone in Regensburg or Nurnberg or Munich had any fun with this weather tonight?
Keydeck
It kicked off here in Laim (Munich) for an hour or so this evening, but for the most part it's been pretty quiet.
jeremy
Biggest hailstones I have ever seen.

Size of a marble.

All watched from thje comfort of our new wintergarden
The Beaver
I've been through quite a few typhoons in Japan and have been through tornadoes in the midwest and have seen hail the size of golfballs in Oregon. This doesn't quite compare, but I was under the impression that Germany was fairly benign weather-wise. Well, tonight changed my opinion. My friend and his wife have been in the town we live in for 4 years now and said that we got our yearly rain in one hour (a bit of an exaggeration). The cobbelstone was running with water over 10cm deep in some places and the gutters and sewers were overflowing. Nothing like eating a hearty Bavarian meal and then smelling the shit welling up from underneath the streets!

Thankfully, tomorrow looks a bit better and Sunday even better. My mt bike buddies won't ride when it's wet out so it looks like I'm going solo tomorrow. Damn pansies. biggrin.gif
Mr.Mosh
my plane going out of munich was 3 hours delayed sad.gif didn't help that the lufthansa staff didn't know wtf was going on and were unable to give any kind of information at all up until 15 mins before the plane finally took off (for a bouncy ride).
Of course, i missed all my connections too and ended up arriving about 8 hours later than planned at the final destinationç
sarabyrd
I got drenched within six minutes in spite of having a large umbrella, and when I started the car (driving barefoot as I was slipping inside my shoes) I got a notice that the trunk was not completely closed. F*** that. I did stop at the next covered gas station to close it. No water seeped in, good rubber insulation there.
Driving through Unterschleissheim (so as to avoid the speeders on B13 - 60kph when wet due to visibility problems, bozos going about 110kph) was a cat of a different color, puddles stretching across both lanes and water up to the axles. Driving into them at 30 kph was like hitting a brick wall. Water burbling up out of the gullies everywhere.
Good news: Almost no damage to the garden and all three cats were seriously bored by the storm. Last thing Haggis Junior would have wanted was panicked cats that you can't pat to calm down due to static electricity.
Scogs was stuck at CDG with no idea when his scheduled flight was going to leave. When I got to the airport at 10.55pm the arrivals were showing flights scheduled for 8pm and arriving 11pm.

Hey, and I heard later on the radio that they did have hailstones the size of tennis balls, on one of the Autobahns, think it was the A8. That's some balls! I am now suitably impressed. biggrin.gif
