Suggested shops, flea markets, and other options

Hi all,

Just moved to Stuttgart and I am looking to by a bike, in decent condition and fairly cheap. Anyone have one to offer? Or can you point me in the right direction on where to find one?

Thanks a million,
Caroline

I hate to thread-hijack, but allow me to say that I am also looking for a bike. I'll wager that I'm looking for something a bit bigger than Caroline, so we're probably not competing buyers. wink.gif

I'd like to find a decent road/paved trail bike. A performance hybrid would be optimal, but I'll take almost any hybrid. I'm a 6' tall guy to give an idea of sizing. If you have something that might work, drop me an email at chris (at) carde (dot) com or PM me here!

Cost is an issue, as I'm only here for 6 months!

Hi,

I haven't bought a used bike here, so I don't know how easy it is to get a cheap one.

You could try this:
  • There a two magazines for private ads in Stuttgart, 'Flohmarkt' and 'Sperrmüll'. Advertising is free, the mags are not.
  • Some bike shops offer used bikes, too.
  • Some supermakets (for example 'Tengelmann') have a message board for customers, where you could place an ad or look if someone has a suitable bike to to offer

Good luck !

A few months ago when I moved here I finally broke down and bought a new bike. I figured it was easier than trying to find a used one that would satisfy me and that I could sell it when I move out. I went to "Die Tretkurbel", which is at Beuthener Str. 1, 70374 Stuttgart (take the U1 dir. Fellbach to Nürnberger Str.). While there I noticed the shopkeeper also had a small sampling of ready-to-go used bikes. He was very friendly (only spoke German though) and might be able to help you out. Limited hours though, so you might want to check his website before you go: www.die-tretkurbel.de

At the very least he might be able to point you toward other used bike sources.

Hi caroline,
if u havent got ur bike yet, i know a person in Sindelfingen who makes bicycles and sells in the fleemarket. The bikes are pretty decent and u can even get bikes in the price range starting from 50€. But if you an avid moutain biker, then perhaps thats the not the place to buy.. he sells easy to drive yet decent bikes for city streets and perhaps some hiking trails.. if u need more info just lemme know..

I was recently transferred to Sindelfingen and intend to purchase a mountain bike for something to do outside of work. I also need to furnish the apartment. Could anyone give me several tips where I could find a used bike shop or furniture bazaar?

Hi,

I've just moved to Stuttgart and will only be here for 4 months. Wondering if anyone knew where to get good and cheap used bikes for just biking around the city. Nothing heavy duty required.

Thanks!
Janet

Hope this post doesn't annoy you as it makes no attempt to answer the question (as I've no idea) but ... it does seem Stuttgart is a good place to cycle around. There was the "Cycling in Stuttgart" festival-cum-event this weekend. I went on a cycle ride today. I was going to do the "Stuttgart by Night" thing yesterday at 8pm but I don't like riding in the pouring rain, so didn't go ;)

Shame that most riding from Stuttgart involves hills! I took my bike to work with me on Friday (on the S-Bahn to Hulb, Boeblingen) and cycled back. That was fun as despite one bit of a clime coming out of Boeblingen it was mainly down hill. Took just over an hour. I reckon it'll be close to double that if I tried to cycle the other way.

I brought my bike with me from London (thanks, BA!) so haven't needed to buy one second hand.
