Expanding the range of a wireless network

How to get a connection throughout an apartment

Hi,

Hope I've got this post in the right section.

In our apartment we share a wireless internet connection with the neighbours. The problem is that the network doesn't reach the whole way through our apartment. How can we expand the range of the network (using repeater/high gain antennae or other solutions) so that it covers our whole apartment?? Looking for a reasonably cheap solution, but with also good network speed. Here are the details:

- The neighbours have a Deutsche Telecom DSL connection with a standard Deutsche Telecom router.
- Network is WEP encrypted
- We're upstairs 1 floor, so running cables isn't an option.

Noticed a few products from LinkSys, but it looks like you need to have a compatible router (a LinkSys one, obviously). Anyone know a solution that will work without having to buy a new router?

Cheers all.

I don't know if this helps but many wifi enthusiasts build their own antenna. You can actually build an antenna out of a Pringles can! Check out "cantenna" in wikipedia. Might help.

Interesting gadget. Problem is that I don't like pringles ;-) Nah, laptop already has built in wireless, so an external aerial on it isn't really an option.

Pringles can work, but they are very gheto, poor quality, poor signal subsitute for the real thing.

Here are weher real Wifi pro's go:

2.4GHz 5dBi Desktop Omni Antenna
Compact 7.4dBi Omni Antenna

And if it still doesn't work after all that add one of these - 2.4GHz 802.11b/g 1 Watt Indoor Bi-Directional Amplifier this outta push your signal up into Freising biggrin.gif

I like the comment about the second product that was linked from the company above :
