Vegetarian and vegan restaurants in Berlin

Hi! Just wondering if anyone knew of any good vegetarian restaurants in Berlin or environs. The diner in question (not myself) does not eat fish but does eat eggs and dairy. I have forgotten the technical word for that, although I would just call that a normal vegetarian. I've never quite understood the "vegetarians" who eat fish. Of course, my mum-in-law calls herself a vegetarian but eats pepperoni pizza; grows on trees, don't cha' know.

Thank you!

Vegan is the term you are looking for.

The only one I know is Yellow Sunshine but it is more of a vegetarian/vegan fast foot joint.

Try Happy Cow for a list of veggie restaurants in Berlin. I would also suggest Massai on Lychener Strasse in P'berg. It's not specifically vegetarian, but there are a lot of plates to choose from and it's good African cuisine.

There's a veggie place with lots of vegan options near Gorlitzer Bahnhof - it's on the square with the large church. If you're looking at the front of the church, the restaurant is on the right-hand side.

I went to Yellow Sunshine before- I loved it! It is kind of a cafe/fast food type place, but it reminded me of good vegetarian restaurants in the US that I miss- what's a vegetarian gonna do to get veggie chicken nuggets or a really good stacked veggie burger? (yum)

Of course if you're looking for a "nicer" environment, you might already know that Indian restaurants often have many vegetarian choices, and there are many good ones in Berlin.

Indian is always a good option for you meat discriminaters.

I don't remember the name of it, but I used to frequent a great little restaurant on Friedrichstrasse (or whatever that main street with the train station is). If you walk from the station and antique stores toward the river you will come to it.

You'll pass the Berliner Cabaret, the Admiral Filmpalast, and a couple of other theaters. I can't remember if it's before or after the river, but it's on the other side of the street (the one with the Admiral) from the Berliner Ensemble.

You suddenly get to an area on the right that has a series of restaurants and cafes set back from the street a little. They cater to tourists, so there are usually menus out in English.

The prices weren't bad, but the first one (maybe second) is a German place. They have really great soups and such. I think most of the soups are vegetarian. In the fall they have a pumpkin soup that is worth the trip to Berlin by itself!

Also, if you keep going down this street, it branches off to the right onto a sort of party/ club street. A few blocks down here is a kino bar. They play english language films and you get to sit in big squishy leather chairs.

There is a quite good vegetarian burger restaurant in Kreuzberg on Wiener Straße. It is called Yellow Sunshine

Another great place in Kreuzberg: Seerose on Mehringdamm

First, the best veggie burger in my 12 years of being a vegetarian is at Tim's Canadian Deli. You can actually recognize the veggies in the burger. I only know the location on Winterfeldplatz but it appears there are other ones: http://www.timinberlin.de/

Second, an amazing selection of veggie sandwiches at Baltas, Goltzstr. 17, in Schöneberg. There must be 8 veggie sandwiches and 2 for meat eaters. These actually take your protein needs into account and have egg or cheese or both. It is a hip cafe/bar, not a restaurant, but a recommended stop if you're in the area.

I don't know of any veggie restaurants. I find I have little trouble when eating out, although most chefs don't undertstand a vegetarian's need for protein.

majas deli on pappelallee between danziger strasse and raumer strasse is both lovely and vegan.

there are loads of places you can eat good vegan and vegetarian food for nothing.
try zielona gora on a sunday night, a meal is only 2 euro and vegan. it's on grünbergerstraße 73 opposite boxhagener platz.

this is just one i have tried and keep going to because it's really good and of course, bloody cheap.
if you don't mind volxküchen then have a look at this website, every day you have a choice.

Hi.
Just in case it hasn't been mentioned:
There's a humble little 'Imbiss' that has beautiful Sudanese vegetarian / vegan food.
It is called 'Elburai Imbiss'.
It is on Tor Strasse.64 on the same side as Kaffee Burger ; just a few shops along (next to Pegasus poster store).
'Adil' (the kind proprietor) serves at least 8 different veggie dishes to eat there or take away.
He also has a few meat dishes available.
He is open till 2am Mon-Fri. And till 4am at The Weekends.
Phone number : 030 214 63167

He serves some of the finest Sudanese food I've ever had.
And it is better than 'Nil' on Grunbergerstr.

Hope you enjoy!

I was really surprised to find Yellow Sunshine, an all-vegi fako-burger type joint, just a few blocks from my boarding house on my first night in berlin! And here I thought there was going to be nothing but pretzels for me... Yay fake bacon!!!

Hi. Can anyone recommend some decent vegetarian restaurants in Berlin - places where one can linger over good food and wine?. I am based mostly in Prenzlauer Berg but travel across the city quite a bit. Cheers!

just have a look at this list

i know it says vegan but once you click on the name of the preferred bar/cafe it will give you further information on whether it's only vegan or also vegetarian

Hi there-I'm also based in Prenzlauerberg.

I'm not veggie but really enjoy the food at an Iraki restaurant on Dunckerstrasse-on the right side when walking from Helmholtzplatz to Stargarderstrasse. A few veggie friends of mine also loved it after struggling to find decent veggie places in Berlin for quite a while. It's good for meat eaters too. Don't remember the name unfortunately but it's terracotta on the outside-just across from Als Vini the fondue place.

When you reach Stargarderstrasse from Schliemannstrasse, I've seen a vegetarian spot directly across from you on Stargarderstrasse. Can't guarantee as I haven't been in it but it looks interesting.

The tapas place on the corner of Stargarder and Senefelder has a few nice meat free dishes and nice wine. (Great draft beer too)

There's also Maja's deli on Papelallee (vegan) and the W-Imbiss on Kastanienallee-Mitte end, around corner from Zionkirchplatz...

Hi Clareq,

Thanks for all the info. Not in Berlin at the moment but look forward to checking them out when I return.

I like 'Babel' on Kastanienallee. Tasty and quick Lebanese food.

In Kreuzberg there's a couple really great vegan/vegi falafel joints. I know these are all over the place, but these are THE BEST- not just junk/snack food:

Nil - sudanese place that has halloumi, tamiya and peanut sauce that will knock your socks off. They have a BUNCH of vegan options.
Nil, Oppelner Str. 4-5, 10997 Berlin
(Kreuzberg, U-Bahn Schlesisches Tor)
more here: http://www.falafeltest.de/index.php/nil-kreuzberg/

King of Falafel - oddly enough this place is run by an old arabic woman, who I suppose is the queen of falafel? Anyways, the falafel and other options are hand-made one at a time with care. They have a number of tastey spreads like the ginger / pomegranate spread for 50 cents extra.
Graefestraße 9 10967 Berlin

Thanks to this list, we ate at Seerose during our visit to Berlin. We highly recommend it!! It's pretty casual, but easily a place you can have a nice dinner at and linger with some bio-wine. They have big tables, a few small 2 seaters, and then some sidewalk tables that would be fantastic in summer.

It's not far out of the city center, in Kreuzberg. Take the U bahn to Mehringdamm and then it's about 200 meters out of the station. Enjoy!!

This place is good - was there when on holiday a couple of years ago - now I live here I'm looking forward to going back - I'm not veggie but I very much enjoyed - the website is http://www.samadhi-vegetarian.de/

Defnitely go to www.HAPPYCOW.NET when you are travelling, as it lists vegetarian restaurants all over the world. You can also leave your own reviews of the restaurants, which helps other people who are looking for decent places to eat. Buon Appetito!

Avril restaurant on Graefestr and Bockhstrasse in Kreuzberf (next to metro Schonlein U8) is a fish a vegetable restaurant that I really love. They have a good number of all vegetarian options and have a nice outdoor setting.

Satyam Vegetarian Indian Restaurant

I like this place but when I took my parents at the weekend they had "possibly the worse meal" of their lives. They are not frequent Indian eaters and were reading the English part of the menu, so went for the speciality "pancake" as it is described in the menu. They claim that they were lucky to have mango chutney to give the rice pancake any taste at all. It looked like a pancake made from the polystyrene filling you get in boxes.

I do recommend this place, but proceed with care if you are choosing something that you don't know! Also if it says "sharf" on the menu, then it probably isn't by most British peoples idea of hot...
