I am flying to Kathmandu on Thursday and will be in the Kathmandu Valley area for just over a week. Anyone spent time there during the summer months and have any suggestions as to what to see/do? I will be staying at a backpackers hostel in Thamel area and would love to do some peak trekking, canyoning or rafting but I'm not sure that's feasible given my relatively tight time-frame & the monsoon season. Any info is much appreciated!

I know Nepal quite well. Been there 3 times.

Stay at the famous Kathmandu Guest House in Thamel. Get pissed at Tom and Jerry pub. Go to Pokhara for the Royal Trek which is quite short. Buy Lonely Planet Nepal. Its in there.

Could go on. I love Nepal so does my wife.

If you ever go back, it's a short flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. It's worth it just to see the airport - the landing strip goes off a huge cliff. I went trekking there one spring, but I don't know if that can be done during monsoon season.

I lived there for two years. The whole city is a museum. I spoke Nepali well, but it has been replaced by Greek (seven years in Cyprus) and now by German (12 years here). The monsoon months in Kathmandu Valley can only be enjoyed. If you can afford it stay here.
