Problem with Microsoft Works 2000

I had no success with the SEARCH function so here goes...

For historical reasons my PC (runs MS-XP) has both WORKS 2000 & Office 2000 installed. Until today all functioned correctly.
Today I cannot open any WORKS text file (.wps). I can open spreadsheet (.wks) and database (.wdb).
On trying to open a text file (.wps) The WORKS start-up banner appears and remains for a minute or so. Then it
gets replaced by a popup with

" Works kann auf eine oder mehere dataien nicht zugreifen..."
It then suggests that the file(s) had been renamed, deleted or moved. It suggests that I reinstall´WORKS. I did but behaviour unchanged.

So whats the difference to a week ago when it all worked? The only thing I can think of is that I replaced my printer - after my Cannon i560 went up in smoke I install a HP Deskjet 4260..

Clues anyone?

It's a microsoft product... Just Remove/Reinstall it

I did with no noticeable effect.

More evidence:
My son's PC also has WORKS 2000 installed. He was able to open one of the .wps (text) files from my PC over the network.

Then he set up the Hp Deskjet on my PC as a remote printer for his PC.
This found the printer - said it would install a driver - and afterwards his WORKS could not open the .wps file any more.
Its an HP Deskjet D4260.
