Just discovered this forum so I thought I'd give it a go.
Been living in Wiesbaden for almost 2 years since my wife works here. Unfortunately I work in Holland, so there's a lot of to-ing and fro-ing. Hopefully that will sort itself out soon. If there's anyone in Rhine-Main keen for a few quiet ones, gimme a yell.

Hi,
I've just arrived in Wiesbaden on Tuesday. I'll be here for the year, working as an Au Pair.
Just wondering if anyone has any nice tips for me. I've got lots of time on my hands so any suggestions as to what to see first, where to go out on Friday night, etc. would be great.
Just as a reference point I'm into the Independent music/film scene, art, photography, small hole in the wall restaurants, dancing and sports.
So anything within that general realm is sure to be interesting.
Thanks & Proust!

Hi and welcome!
There are a few peeps in Wiesbaden who can point you in the right direction I am sure. And you are more than welcome to come along to the
Waldgeist meetup at the end of the month.
Or if you fancy a trip into Frankfurt...
Oh and if you keep "Prousting" people in the beer gardens / Apfelweinwirtschaften, they'll think you're an intellectual snob.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prosthttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ProustCome to the Waldgeist as PM suggests and we'll teach you the pronunciation. Over and over again.

Oh man, I am so embarassed. That's really funny though, because I've just watched a favorite movie of mine "Little Miss Sunshine" in which one of the characters is a Proust scholar. So I think somewhere along the line of hearing "Prost" I was writing "Proust".
Good to know.
I think I might come to the Waldgeist. You've obviously got something to teach.
Thanks,

Any meetups planned in the near future in Wiesbaden?

Hi Kelsi, welcome to the crowd. If you are interested in independent films, there is a German Film Festival on at the moment in Ludswighafen which ends this week. I've just got back from the UK and am thinking of going along to one, its always pot-luck with these though whether the film matches the description!
If you are interested the link is
Film Festival.

Hi,
Here are some of the usual haunts for the English speaking community in Wiesbaden:
-The Irish Pub, Michelsberg 15 which is one of the side streets off the main pedestrian area. The pub's a bit hard to find because it's underground!
-Scrooges which is in Goldgasse where there is also a cluster of restaurants with outside tables etc.
-The James Joyce which is in Sonnenbergstrasse just beside the casino (Kurhaus).
We're usually in one of these most nights of the week ;-)!

We seem to be a growing number...maybe we should all try and get together for a night out sometime!
I tried to arrange a couple of events last winter and didn't get much interest but maybe there's more people around now...especially if we combined it with people from Mainz too to make up the numbers.
Let me know what you think and i'll post a meet up suggestion if enough people seem up for it

I'd be up for that but I'm usually not here at the weekends so a weekday would suit be best!

I'd also be up for a meet up in either Mainz or Wiesbaden.
I might be pushed for dates though, since I spend most of my time in Cologne just now..
Just make a suggestion and if I'm here, I'll tag along!

Hi just making myself known to everyone!
I've been in Wiesbaden about four Weeks now and I'll be staying for about six months as part of my degree! Due to my currently poor command of German and lack of confidence I'm not finding it easy to meet new people! I would definitely be interested in any get togethers here.

There are 2
Irish pubs in central Wiesbaden...the James Joyce on Sonnenberger Str. which is a more quiet affair, good for watching sport and serves my fav Weizen beer on tap. And then there is Irish Pub Wiesbaden on Michelsberg, which is very lively especially at weekends, and the likelihood is you will not come out of there sober

Very handy that a kebab shop is right opposite!

over-30 meets
Hmm i've still got 6 months left before i have the dubious honour of putting myself into that category
As regards
curry nights, i generally find my home cooked ones are as good as what you pay 15 Euro and upwards for here. But then i'm from the West Midlands so i'm a bit of a curry snob!
But yeah am always up for a beer...maybe it's time to try & arrange another meet-up?

@chickenmadras: Is your house open for
Curry Night then?
@DH: Are you in FRA or WI? Or you would travel to WI even if you are based in FRA??
What is a good place for a meetup? I don't know. Haven't been anywhere yet and somehow the first place came to mind is Vapiano (Wiesbaden). Wednesday night?? Anyone?

My house is always open for a
curry night if someone else cleans up and empties the dishwasher afterwards
Defo up for some drinks or dinner sometime though...this week's pretty bad for me but maybe one night next week? Wednesday perhaps?

Hello all!
My name is Jen and I am planning on moving to the area starting in January for 6-9 months. Still in the process of finding a job and housing, but my boyfriend lives in the area so I figured, WHY NOT?!

Anyway, I am basically hoping to possibly make a few English-speaking friends as I want to establish my own social life apart from my boyfriend! Just wanted to introduce myself to the forum and maybe even plan up to meet and go out n about in the future.

For those curious, I am 24, female, German/US dual citizen, although my German is TERRIBLE since I have forgotten it! I love meeting new people, so I hope to make some new friends through this!
Take care,
Jen

Hi Everybody!
I moved to Wiesbaden 2 months ago, originally I am from Tanzania (East Africa) but I have a German mom and I have been speaking German my whole life. So my German is pretty good. I have been living Germany for about 6 years (Mönchengladbach, Düren, Aachen, Düsselord and now Wiesbaden). I can't say much about Wiesbaden, all I have seen so far is the city centre and the Platter Strasse (I work in Taunusstein). I am 27, female and won't rest until I have seen the rest of the world. Hope to hear from you and maybe meet up with some of you.

Hey everyone. I just ran across this forum when I was Google-ing how to get my voicemail prompts in English
I'm American, currently working in Germany, and living in Wiesbaden for...I dunno...the forseeable future. I've been here for several weeks now, and I've been going nuts trying to meet people, since my grasp of the German language is non-existant (I never had any thought of ever being here until February this year). So, I was really glad to find this group. It seems really lively, and I look forward to meeting you all soon!
Take care all!

Hi! I am living in Wiesbaden with my family of four (hubby, 7-year-old, and 5-month-old). I would love to know if there are things to do with families (English speaking). We do not know German at all, although I plan to take courses when I'm able to. Any suggestions would be great. We would love to meet other families in the area! It's nice to meet everyone!

Hi everyone!
I just moved here to Wiesbaden for the summer while I'm interning during my university's summer vacation, and just wanted to introduce myself. I'm a female majoring in engineering and interested in all types of sports and music. Also, I am always up for a debate on politics.

Looking forward to meeting everyone at the next meetup!

Hi Clrbluesky,
and welcome to Wiesbaden, I myself have only been around since end of April and going back to Canada at the end of November.
We have a group get together on the 24th, we still have to decide on the place, and again on Friday the 27th, a few of us will be going out in Frankfurt. You're welcome to join at either of those events. We will be carpooling for Frankfurt, I think there is 2 of us that will be driving. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
Cheers,

Hello Everyone,
This is my first posting here. I'm not sure if I'm truly an expat - having settled in Wiesbaden for 6 years and in Germany for a total of 8 (previously Munich based) - but would love to meet other native, English speakers in the area. Preferably Wiesbaden but am happy to travel to Mainz, Frankfurt, etc. I find that, even though I have very many, close, Germans friends I miss the style of humour that comes when talking to other native speakers. I guess I also miss a bit of being "British" - whatever that means. So would any person / people / groups like to meet up for coffee or a beer sometime?
I'm 42, love music (off to the Sonar music festival in Barcelona tomorrow which shows the type of music I like), I also like sailing and diving. I play Badminton with friends weekly (all are welcome to join) and love Rugby (although hard to get to see much of it in Germany). I also love cooking and would be happy to organise small, group cooking evenings if people are interested. Plus the usuals - eating out, chatting, movies, books, etc.
I work in IT as an IT Director across EMEA so have to trave quite a lot
So, if there any like minded people out there who want to simply meet up for a beer sometime please let me know - would love to say hello.
Regards
Colin

You can generally see rugby in the
Irish pubs. I saw Wales-South Africa at the James Joyce Pub (Sonnenberger Strasse) last saturday.
The England games in (?) New Zealand might be a bit too early due to the time zone, however.
They certainly show all of the 6-nations games in the spring.

Hi Colin,
What type of sailing do you do? I moved to Germany (Wiesbaden) at the end of April and I am missing my sailing season in Canada. I used to own a Catamaran, Mystere 6XL, (same as tornado if you know Catamarans), before I crashed it last summer. Knowing I was moving to Germany, I'm waiting till I get back in Canada to get another one for next season.
We are all meeting next Tuesday.. Check for the other meetup post and you can join. (if you're not already on the list)
cheers,

Hi all, Moved to Germany a couple of weeks ago for work and have been living in the Mercure hotel in Raunheim since then. Just got a place in Wiesbaden and I get the keys on the 1st August so if anyone can give me some pointers on best places to go etc would be great. I just hope that its more lively than Raunheim, its really boring. So let me know where the party is and I will be there.
