A couple which didn't make the cut...

Dancarina, some of the best photos that I saw were from point-n-shoots. Twas a lot of fun wandering around. Whilst Munich has its fair share of people wandering about poking through dustbins, I spent a pleasant couple of hours gazing into puddles. Did get a few odd looks.
Well done Poots n' Grinner for organising the event and getting everything sorted afterwards. Looking forward to the next one.

Oh, I didn't think we should post our own yet until after the competition. I had a really hard time making up my mind which one to pick myself. Mine are all up on my yahoo thingy, including the one I submitted, otherwise I would put up the link. I will later though.
DDBug, at this point, I don't think it really matters. You can't change the one you submitted so why not show the ones that didn't make the cut? Most of us are curious to see what you all came up with. I hear you had a few very nice shots.

Ok, without my entry ... here are some of the others. Photos 98 and 117 were also in the running, but in the end I picked something totally different (obviously).
Edit - and 83, I liked that one as well. (I'm so indecisive sometimes

The only reason I felt ok posting those two pics was that they were all quite different so the anonymity of the vote from my perspective is preserved. If they'd all been of the same subject then I wouldn't.

So is it alright to post my 3 pictures that were in the running?

Maybe Poots has a different view on it. I just think that so long as the photo which you've submitted to the competition can't be identified based on any others that you show then there shouldn't really be an issue.

I will wait for Poots to confirm...

Poots doesnt have time to really have an opinion on this. The thread to vote will be going up at midday today with the smaller versions of the images. The larger versions of it all will be done tonight at home

I'd like to throw the theme "Waiting" into the pot.

Hidden treasures sounds like it would produce some interesting results. Unfortunately, I have kiddo coming back from camp that day and probably can't participate

I'm not a huge fan of "hidden treasures". Don't really know what that means. I keep thinking of Lucky Charms...
Keydeck
May 21 2007, 7:40 pm
They're always trying to...
Oh feck it, I can't bring myself to say it.
I like "Hidden Treasures" because it's completely open so you'll get a huge range of possibilities.
I'd also like to suggest that we get to include an optional title with each image. In the last round there was the photo of a reflection of a statue in a window which I don't think a lot of people got. A title might have helped there. It gives the viewer an extra idea of what the photographer was thinking. Of course as I write that I think that perhaps the image itself should do all the talking, however I still like the idea of a title.

I'm up for "Stairs" that should sort out the pros from those of us with big cameras. There are some beautiful fotos from a photographer in D'dorf, that make me want to cry. Muenchen has a fair good opportunity to make something from stairs. Whatever the theme Im there filling my card.

some more ideas
going places - a huge open field too, and lets peeps be very creative (can cover stairs too)
looking up- there are some really cool building facades in this city and also some interesting signs. Again lets people be creative, as its so open to interpretation.
Young and Old- could be people or buildings
Drinking in Munich - again could be beer or water or a dog bowl...
let me finish my supper, and I will think of some more
I also like Keydeck's idea about labeling.

why not something thematic and open to a bit of artistic interpretation like say "Summer"?

I liked the Munich A-Z thing...
Grinner
May 21 2007, 8:18 pm
If you make it an open theme then there really isnt a theme...
It needs to have a specific topic..
bern
May 21 2007, 8:20 pm
A-Z was a specific theme. You have to photograph something that starts with each letter of the alphatbet.
Grinner
May 21 2007, 8:22 pm
I was refering to Bucket06...
The A_Z needs a whole day and 3 or 4 hours after to DL and choose 26 pictures...
But I agree, it would be a fantastic theme
bern
May 21 2007, 8:24 pm
It depends.
Anyway, whilst I appreciate themes as a way to level out the playing field, I don't think they are all that necessary. I think they may limit more than inspire. But, conversely, they may give ideas to the uninspirable.
Grinner
May 21 2007, 8:29 pm
We decided on specific Themes as it encourages people to look for these specifics...
If its thrown open then there is no discipline...
It was harder than It looks to find a good piccie on the subject of reflections...

I know that "reflections" was difficult, especially considering the weather. But that's why I like the idea of not having a theme or maybe expanding it at bit. It gives you more flexibility and hte oportunity to tap into you creativity.

I don't know yet whether I will be able to join the next competition, but I will repeat my previous offer of opening
The Arc for the post competition meet-up and photo viewing.
A laptop can be connected to the projector to view all the efforts and I would offer an Arc Meal Voucher to the photo voted best on the day.
Probably a beer voucher for the runner-up.

Having themes also helps with the judging. An untrained eye may have a hard time comparing, for example, a still life of a banana to a picturesque mountain scene.

a few more topics
-Time in the city (anything showing time- clocks or words)
-Beer, Munich's fountian of youth
-the animals of Munich

As a photographer I like themes as they make me think and also help focus my mind. But having said this, I do like quite open or perhaps ambiguous themes which can be interpreted in different ways, perhaps bringing out some more creative elements.
One theme which I have seen before and worked extremely well was "Blue", this can really be interpreted in so many different ways.
Try considering soemthing like this, a colour or shape which offers many possibilities.
