I bought a unicycle

Bought one of these...

Punchbear
Even a high Homer Simpson would call you on the intrinsic dubiosity of such a purchase. I really hope you plan to maraud through a Blade Night hurling ball bearings, insults and the occasional Molotov cocktail with the required gay abandon. Making "whoooooopppeeee" noises. Otherwise there's no point in buying such a contraption. As Timmeh would say "Ghey". If you bought a replica M41-A to compliment the object of much gheyness, I'd have no objections to you running amok on a tricycle.

Word.
Yeti
Bet you whoever you bought it off didn't put it in the "Bicycle for sale" section. Did they tell you that the rest of the frame is in the post?
Punchbear
Yeti, you spelt flame wrong. Plus, can I just draw attention to the pink rims. Mmmm. Pink rims. Wherever is this going to go?
zemonkey
Oh yes all gheyness, is mine. Have a parade on me. The pink Tryall rim is the word.(punchbear nota bene a uni is one it does not have rims but a rim).

We ain't cool to start with.

You boy be just a tad jealous.
If it's got wheels I likey.
Yeti
But it ain't got wheels, does it? It's got wheel.
zemonkey
Right! Perhaps that is why it took me so long to get one. But now that that I am right in the middle of my late mid life crisis I can do anything I want. Purple hats are IN.

All these pseudo-alpha males...

Let every man be free to chose his own damnation.
Punchbear

I damn myself to dress as a Teletubbie on a unicycle.

QUOTE
brian invented this lunacy when he was at oregon state univ. in the mid 70s. the lance is an 8 foot wooden dowel...the sort of thing that's normally used to hang clothes on. it has a tennis ball on the end, with silicone caulk on it. we discovered that the lance tends to skitter wildly on the shield, which is both dangerous and makes it difficult to get a good hit. the caulk minimizes this: it makes the lance tip stick to the shield long enough to get a decent hit.

A short documentary.

Once you introduce the element of combat, it gets interesting.
Yeti
Pretty much explains everything you need to know about Microsoft in the eighties.

"Come to unicycle country, where every ride is a wheelie"
zemonkey
excellent video, I think.

So fylosofical question when does ghey become cool, as if I cared?
Punchbear
Round about the time you don battle armor, mount the wheel and begin challenging random strangers to duel by unicycle. And spraypaint it black and put spikes on the wheels. Can you ride it? How long is a piece of string does it take to learn on average? What do they cost?

all these guys must have very high voices me thinks...

zem, tell us all about it. The kids around here wheel at breakneck speed along the pathways and I so want to join in! Where'd you buy it, how much, does insurance come with it (just kidding)?

Just glance quickly at the that glove on the floor and away again - you'll swear it has six fingers ...

The uni low down...

A simple uni costs about 60 to 120€ or so new... The model I got is about 200€ (it is really a muni, I'll explain) - middle high end. Learning to ride: two chairs or crutches or a wall, work on balance by looking at the horizon not your feet and practice, practice, practice, practice. Takes 5-15 hours over as many days...

If you think of starting get a 20" or 24" - good learning unis

I learned in college and am now re-learning mostly from scratch.

Some great resources out there

http://www.unicycling.org/
http://www.unicyclist.com/

online shop in Germany - http://www.einradladen.net/shop/where.php

gloves, helmet and shin guards (patience, music and beer) - these are good friends!

Oh and do not use ski poles - I have seen one nasty accident.

Learning: http://www.unicycling.net/learn/

I bought mine near Paris (at a bike shop where I spend a lot of free time ... I was actually looking for a tandem smile.gif and a derailleur for my daughter) but off the net they are quite easy to get.

And finally - a muni - the m stands for mountain, as it is pretty flat around Munich and I need a challenge...
Some of my muontain bikes got stolen before my first move to Munich - I am looking to replace these bikes - but have not yet decided to go road, single speed or what (the Alps are both close and far away). This seemed like a good short term solution for a monkey.
