I'd be interested in that. I've just picked up some book crossing books from a friend and intend to do that- maybe we could start bookcrossing as there seems to be a lot of members already in Berlin?

A couple of months back a few others here were doing book swapping. See the related chat:
Berlin book swappersMe, I don't read books.
So I guess I'm out of the book club.

Dang it how old do you have to be to read a book and join a book club? Did I miss something about their posts that made them appear "mature"?

Oo, Oo, me too!
You're not planning on capping at six or anything, are you?
also, when do you want to meet? I like weekends during the day (more predictable on the timing), but I may be the odd one out.

Weekend daytimes would actually be better for me too, since I don't finish work til 9pm on weekdays.
Maybe we could set an intial meeting for next weekend?

I might be into it, but what kinds of books? Maybe a topic-specific book club would be cool..

I am 26. Do I qualify??

I'd be up for daytime weekends also.
A topic specific book club might be a bit narrow though? I read a whole variety of genres myself and I think if we narrowed it down to one niche, it would be a small bookclub!
Looking forward to sharing some books!

give it until the end of November and I will be off loading all the novels I bought over from Aus to finish off my uni studies, free to a good home to anyone who wants them, I'm not particularly keen on luggin over 10 kilos or so of books home. (that's right at a 20 kilo limit that's not much room for clothes etc. may explain why I turn up to thurs night drinks wearing the same outfit

)

I'm interested, too. Where and when should we meet?
ok ...take it that we dont really care about how old you are as long as you can read!!! and yes narrowing it down to a specific topic gets kinda dull..you'd be suprised but sometimes you could get a load of books that you'd never buy but enjoy reading.
can anyone suggest a place where we could meet..next weekend sounds good to me.

So perhaps we don't narrow down the topic, but it would be a good idea to have a conception of what kind of book we'll be reading, how weighty the tomes will be, that kind of stuff. After all, JK Rowling isnt Thomas Pynchon

I agree that we should be open on the book topics/types/authors but maybe we could agree on whether the first book would be fiction or non-fiction and go from there. Everyone can take this week (we're shooting for next weekend the 21st or 22nd, right?) to research books and can come prepared to suggest one. Or I've heard of book clubs agreeing that the book be a national or international bestseller regardless of the genre. At the first meeting, everyone who's motivated can suggest a book and then majority rules on the book chosen. How does that sound?
Regarding location, where do you all live? I live off of the Adenauplatz station in Charlottenburg. There is a coffee shop named "Coffeemamas" that I could ask about us using but maybe that's too far from everyone...

Hello! I'm new to the site. Do you mind if a friendly 23 year old American girl comes along to this meeting of the minds? I used to work in a bookshop and studied English so I may have a few good ideas about books.

Drats, I was thinking about coming along, but being 10 years older I think I'd best stay in and peruse my old Readers' Digests.

ok. great, so we're on for next Saturday, July 21st at noon to meet at "Coffeemamas" which is located off the Adenauplatz subway stop. If we have a large turnout, we can walk to the Starbucks directly across the street which has more room.

Hi,
I'm going to plan to be there too, if that's OK? I'm a 23 year old girl from the US, only been here about a month. I don't have many books with me here, but a book club sounds fun!
Thanks,

Did anyone try to find us but miss us today? 4 of us met up, and have decided our first book to read is Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides. We'll be meeting to discuss that book the first Saturday of September, and it would also be great to bring books to swap with other people too.

Daria,
We've had one meeting so far and decided that we would read "Middlesex" by Jeffrey Eugenides. We'll meet again at Coffeemamas off the Adenauplatz U-Bahn station (across from the Block House restaurant) on the first Saturday in September at noon. Because we had a small group of four last month, we decided to meet monthly to discuss the chosen book and also to bring books we have read to our meetings to loan out. If we get a larger contingency , we'll decide whether to start a book purchasing "kitty" that allows members to buy books they'd like to read to loan out to members. That's assuming we run out of books to circulate from our own collection.
I hope this makes sense. We'd welcome you or anyone else interested in joining us in September.
Cheers,
Nicole

Nice call, Speedy. I just realized that the first Saturday in September was THIS Saturday and I will be out of town.
We originally said that we would meet at noon at Coffeemamas off of the Adenaurplatz U-Bahn to discuss "Middlesex." I'm not essential so if we get a critical mass let's say that we're still on. Otherwise, I'll be around next Saturda, September 8th.
Can the majority of people meet this Saturday at noon?
