Bavaria is the Texas of Europe

Have been having a discussion with a friend regarding similarities of Bavaria and Texas. Anyone have any thoughts of whether Bavaria is the Texas of Europe?

Tim
DrivinWest
Funny, I just got back from Texas (Houston) yesterday.

Having lived in both Texas and Bavaria, I'd say the major similarity is the elitism that Bavarians and Texans have over the rest of their respective countries.

That said, Bavaria lives up to its stereotypes. Texas doesn't.
eurovol
Not even! But before I go any further, what, prey tell, makes you or your friend think that?
It can't be the weather.
It can't be anything that I can actually think of huh.gif
Keydeck
Ooh, ooh, ooh, they've both got a twat in charge!

Note: If big brother is listening, I didn't mean that at all. It was just a cheap gag. On a personal level I think Stoiber is a great bloke, erm honest. Please call off the GSG9 vans that are parked outside my apartment.

Sandra Bullock is my answer.
Born in Nürnberg, lives in Austin.
Bingo
Oh and meat perhaps?

I have only found Texans to arrogant and loud mouth when they weren't actually in Texas. When at home, they seemed to calm down. Navy buddies were my experience and they always seemed to be the loudest when argueing with New Yorker's about which was the best place to live. Funny thing was, half of those claiming to be New Yorkers lived in Jersey rolleyes.gif
Keydeck
Eurovol, the schnitzel is not a fair comparison. Better to use Schweinhaxe.

Ain't that the truth. When in college at Vanderbilt (AKA University of Texas at Nashville) hordes of kids from Texas made damn well sure you knew where they were from; Texas flags hanging out of dorm rooms, buckles, etc. I was so turned off by Texans that I swore I'd never live there (so much for that as I lived then from '99 to '03).
interplanetjanet
Texas: could culturally be considered its own little country, much like California and NYC
Bayern: same

Texas: lots of conservatives
Bayern: same

I once went to a free concert on the 4th of July called the "Dallas Freedom Fest" in which the performers were Don Henley, Stephen Stills, Joe Walsh and America, among others. I was travelling around in a VW van with some friends at the time, and some people in the parking lot who saw our California plates yelled, "F-ing California hippies!" blink.gif
Keydeck
So they knew you, yeah? smile.gif
Crotaline
Tim... let it go dude. If you dont like Germany so damn much, go back to Canada. there are lots of people who like it here, and who HAVE lived in both, and do NOT see the similarities. Go back to work already, ass.

And if you think they have a Chrstopher street day in Texas, as they do here in Munich, think again.

When was the last time a man of other than white race was dragged behind a truck by some good-ole-boys here in Bayern?

Have you heard one person here say anything about being a 'Nigger-lovin, tree-huggin faggot" ? No? Yeah, well, go live anywhere outside of Austin for 2 years, and then come back here and tell us how they are both the same.

As for customer service here? Yeah it sucks more than Monica Lewinski, so? Maybe if everyone tried to speak a bit more German, instead of ASSUMING every German does and will speak English, there would be a bit better attitude to us all. How many Germans go to the US and walk around saying "Sprechen Sie Deutsch?" to the dude at Chili's?

Im so tired of this topic being brought up over and over. If it sucks so bad here, go home. Get out of whatever contract you have, and go back to [insert better city here] . Quit your job, drop out of school, do whatever it takes, just GO.

I admit there are times I dont want to be here, but I dont rip on the city/culture because of it. Its a different country with different customs, practices, rules, language, traditions... DEAL WITH IT AND QUIT YER BITCHIN.

bunch of pansies who cant adapt...

[grumbling scowling seething rage oozes from C. as he stomps away from the unhappy masses complaining about their choosen lot and how its not like' back home' and trying to compare places that have no relation to each other spatially, ideologically or any other way...]

What makes you think Tim hates it in either of these places?
Crotaline
If this is the Tim I know, then this is a topic he REPEATEDLY brings up. If this is the Tim I know, it is HIS opinion and his friend sits and does not say much, because he is as sick of hearing this schtick as I am. As for Texas, Its just an educated guess he does not like it there. He might love it there. I don't really know.

My point is he brings this topic up at every oppoortunity, and I am tired of it, because it is a topic where all it does is make the ranting idiots who dont like it here and are unhappy, bitch about crap that anyone with an ounce of self-motivation could change.

I realize im feeding this, with my rant here, but I REALLY feel the need to slap some people around and tell them "GET A LIFE AND STOP BITCHING" because there is no relation between Texas and Bavaria (Except the Shiner one. That is good beer for Texas beer.)

And I grew up in Texas, and I married a Bavarian and moved here, leaving my friends and family behind. Leaving EVERYTHING behind. I chose to be here, and even on my hardest of days, I still choose to be here.

[mumbles something about 'kitchen' and 'fire' and then the smoke alarm goes off, and he stubs his toe on the doorframe in his rush to get the windows open...]

Hmmm Tim, this is an interesting topic you post. I have also been in discussions with a friend regarding similarities between Bavaria and other places. However, I would say that if you would like to make such a comparison, the question you want to axe is:

Is Bavaria the Texas of GERMANY?

If that's the question then you could probably answer "yes, it's very similar" especially when you compare the fierce pride and the love of cooked swine that both places seem to have.

Have you spent enough time in France, Italy, wherever to be able to state that people from various areas in thoses countries are no less proud, or individualists, or hog-eaters than the Bavarians? Probably not.

I live in Bavaria and married a Texan so that is my six degrees of separation from the issue.

One more thing:
Texans: wear funny leather pants (chaps)
Bavarians: wear funny leather pants (lederhosen)

Your mileage may vary, enjoy yours, etc...
eurovol
Been here seven years and compared to Texas, Bavaria is predominately colder and wetter
.
I grew up at the foothills of the Smoky Mtns in Tennessee and the weather here is just about the same as there, only 10°C colder and 30% less humidity here. When I lived in Texas and it finally decided to rain, the ground was so dry that it flooded with only a couple of inches falling. Same in Phoenix, little rain and a whole lot of flood.
TiminMunich
Wow, Crotaline, I didn't mean to stir you up into such a froth. All I asked was a discussion on similarities.

Regarding my repeatedly bringing up this subject, we had one drunken evening where I vented my fustrations. After that, I realized I went over the top that night and refrained from bringing it up. Sorry you got so offended, I guess I am the only one who can make an ass of himself when he gets loaded...

Finally, to answer your statement: "Go back to work already, ass." You're right, I should get back to my job.

I wish I could say the same to you.

I agree in that both places seem to have more joie de vivre than the norm, and the people are overall pretty religious but I have found there to be something very fake about Texans. They dont say what they mean- perhaps partly that southern charm at work. Bavarians are uniquely straight forward-no b.s.

on another note- God I love them baby monkeys!
TexasTornado
The similarity is Texas is the largest State in the US as is Bavaria to Germany.

@ Crotaline - Gay Pride Parade right smack dab in the center of Houston with Marsha Wash going down the street on a float singin' "It's Raining Men" and yes, our entire neighborhood (Montrose) went outside to get "Absolutley soaking wet!!!"

@ DrivinWest - You little shit! you were in Houston last week? I had a shopping list, messages for you to deliver and a free beer sitting on the bar of The Laff Stop AND The West Alabama Ice House all you had to do was show up.

@ Elfenstar - do you think Shiner would sell here? We're opening a place here in Munich soon and so far the beers I had selected are:
Augustiner, Becks, Weinhenstephan, SchneiderWeiss & Unertl, Newcastle Brown, Guinness and maybe I should have Shiner?

and please, not all Texans are loud mouths and obnoxious. I was born in Alabama. My parents relocated to Houston when I was 11. I really don't think it's fair to blame my behavior on an entire state.

Sierra Nevada!!!

I feel like nitpicking here.

So what is the Alaska of Germany then?

Perhaps that should be edited to "continental US". wink.gif
Smelly Socks
Crotaline, when you say Tim's friend is sick of hearing his schtick, who are you referring to? An actual friend or his "friend"? With the venemous salivation dripping from your lips your meaning of the word is lost to me. I ask this because I wonder if you dare to have spoken for me, being the "friend". Really, either way it is infantile to bring annother into your childish ranting, whether you have had discussions with a friend of Tim's outside this forum or if you are referring to me.

As to the topic at hand: Never been to Texas, so I have no idea unsure.gif
Jeeves
@ IPJ Nope that won't do either wink.gif How bout in the 48 contiguous states?

My total experience of TX so far involves changing planes in Houston a couple of times. I only hope that the friendliness/helpfulness of the staff at that airport is no reflection of the rest of the state.
Elfenstar
we have two slogans in Texas:
"Don't mess with Texas" and "The Friendly State". Nuff said!

@TT: Would love to have Shiner Bock here, but if the Germans would want US beer? Even in the U.S. no one has heard of Shiner (although it tastes far better than Becks). Can you do a trial?
interplanetjanet
What about Sierra Nevada?! wink.gif
meckle
Chilli cook offs ??

Though 3lions if you won the cook off in Texas I suspect a posse may be raised to run you out of town...yeeeeehhaaaaaaa !
randy
It's "Lower 48" you cheechakos!

I'll echo IPJ: stock Sierra Nevada (and show bball and ami football games (Hazza, take note)).
Jeeves
"Lower" in what sense? Further south? Then that would include Hawaii but exclude Maine...
randy
"Lower 48" is the entire phrase - it's a usual way for Alaskans to refer to the contiguous states; ergo they don't say "lower 49" to include Hawaii.
Jeeves
Okey dokey, ta. Interesting that "Continental US" should be anchored in certain Federal Laws although a misnomer. I prefer "Outside" although there would be few occasions when it would be understood. My curiosity has been appeased and I shall cease nitpicking now.
TexasTornado
Awh Shucks Jeeves.

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale? is that what you kids are screaming about? I must be honest, I had not planned on any American Beers, however since the Brew Master at Shiner Bock in a Bavarian and there are a few Texan's on the forum with a hankerin' for a Shiner, I was willing to give it a shot.

As for showing sports, not gonna happen at our place. That's what the Arc is for. Our concept is more along the lines of Tex Mex food, larger selection of beer than normal for Munich, martini bar (yes the original gin or vodka martini, not blanco vermouth over ice) and a cigar bar. We have two bars so we can create a different vibe in each. We embrace everyone! Show your colors! World Peace begins at home, so please, once we open the doors try to forget your hatred for your fellow man and just get your buzz on.

Don't Mess with Texas, The Friendly State!
love, light & laughter to yall...
Jeeves
@ TT Well I can go on if you insist wink.gif
But I don't want to drag the thread from Texas to Alaska...

Dear god, please! How can I help? Financial investment? 1st born? Whatever it takes!

Back on topid, I've always found Texans in Texas to be the nicest people ever. I guess after almost 5 years I was kinda one of them, so maybe I'm biased. Still, there is a level of arrogance amongst quite a few; "Texas is the best! Why? Uhhh, cuz it is the biggest! Yeah!"

A couple things I miss about Texas:

People: Total strangers have a genuine familiar friendliness. I can't count the number of times women in the check-out lines called me "sugar" or "baby."
Food: Houston has more restaurants per capita than any other city in the world. Competition being what it is, most of them are EXCELLENT. I'm not just talking Tex-Mex either, I'm talking about every kind of food imaginable.
Sunsets: Yeah, it sounds totally girly, but the sky is just plain bigger there. I can't explain it. Never have I seen a place with such jaw-dropping sunsets.
Weather: 8 months out of the year the weather is great. 3 in summer is it stiflingly hot, 1 in winter it is pretty cold (at least in Houston).

Bavaria - used to be independent nation

When asked where I am from, I don't say "America" I say "Texas".

The only time I have heard that phrase is sitting here, now, in Munich. That says something sad.gif

I am assuming you mean there is no racism or hatred here. Jeez. Can't tell you how many times I have heard Bavarians rant about Turks, Yugos, Ossies(from the east), and how instead of tearing the wall down, they should have built it higher.

It is insane to think Texas has a monopoly on ignorance wink.gif
Crotaline
Very true. I was actually using a phrase that was thrown AT me while growing up in Texas. Repeatedly.

Its not just Bavarians that rant against turks, The same goes on in Berlin, where the turkish population is much larger, and lord knows where else here in the whole nation.
The Ossies thinig is not what I would call racist, but yes, it is bigoted in a way i can not comprehend. I see that as like calling someone a "Yankee" in the south. some say it as an i dentifying thing, some use it as an insult. I really dont get that.

I do need to apologize for not being as clear with my rant. so:

To all to TT'ers who read my earlier non-anger managed rant, I apologize for letting my non-esspresso'ed agitated mind loose on all of you. It was nothing personal.
