The title says it all:
London unveils logo of 2012 Games.
QUOTE
The logo for the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics has been unveiled in a star-studded ceremony in London.
The jagged emblem, based on the date 2012, comes in a series of shades of pink, blue, green and orange and will evolve in the run-up to the Games. (...)
The new design, which cost £400,000, has received a mixed response, but Lord Coe was adamant it put across the image and message that he wanted the London Games to deliver to the world. (...)
"It won't be to be eveybody's taste immediately but it's a brand that we genuinely believe can be a hard working brand which builds on pretty much everything we said in Singapore about reaching out and engaging young people, which is where our challenge is over the next five years.
Judging by the current results of the BBC poll, the reaction is overwhelmingly negative. I wonder how TTers feel about the logo. Any comments?

"This is the vision at the very heart of our brand," said London 2012 organising committee chairman Seb Coe.
Or in other words - "We've been sold this by an ad agency. We don't understand it, but they tell us its really cool."

As pointed out on the BBC News messageboard, it looks like a couple having sex. Something incorporating the two 'O's in 'London' with the Olympic rings would have been simpler and smarter.

I can't make out what it's actually supposed to be, but whatever it is, it looks like somebody hit it with a sledgehammer.

Its amazing what happens when 45-60 year olds try to guess what youths think of as "cool". Embarrasing.

I get my logos done at
http://www.logodesignworks.com/ for $197 a pop.
You get 3 concepts, 3 revisions, job done. So £100 all in. I guarantee they would have got something better and saved £399,900
I am almost tempted to ask them for a design, and then pitch to the UK press 4 examples. The 3 costing £100 and then the pink mess costing £400,000.
I know it is hard to be original, but that is a crap logo - period.

methinks many of you are missing the point. Its going to evolve over the next five years, thereby ensuring plenty of future focus and comment on the logo as it changes (including, no doubt, a few threads on here)
I think the final evolved version will be pretty good, as otherwise if they have really selected this to be the final logo I may be compelled to go outside and shoot myself in despair

It is the Emperor's new clothes. If any sane person was sitting on the commitee they would have said "Fuck off and don't waste my time" when presented with that steaming turd of a logo.
Evolve? How can it evolve? You cannot polish a turd.

Quick, somebody take the gun away from him!
(I don't know why you think the logo is going to evolve. It's supposed to be a brand, an immediately recognisable one; it would be really confusing if it were to change a bit every year or whatever.)

something to do with the use of the word evolve...
If you take a look at the
alternative logos, on the other hand, you can see some pretty interesting and inventive ones (the first one is my favourite). And since they were sent in by BBC readers, they presumably didn't cost a penny!

#5 is rather good but probably way over too many people's heads...

Yep. The word "London" lends itself so well to the Olympic rings that it's stupid not to use it. But I expect the PR company thought it wasn't sufficiently "out there". Drug-riddled tossers.

To be fair, there is a lot more to picking such a high profile design than people think. Many designs are made, then they run complex (and maybe useless) tests with control groups to see how each one will effect the public. I'm not sticking up for them, but for a high profile brand for instance, the difference between one logo and another, whose differences seem irrelevant, can mean the difference between millions of dollars in revenue.

It looks like a band name that someone would paint on their schoolbag in the 80s. The agency is probably ordering in more sleeves to laugh up as I type. Dreadful logo, truly dreadful.

Jun 4 2007, 7:07 pm
On the subject of real world concerns, cost to use is also relevant. A 2 colour design is cheaper and easier than the 6 colours mine would need (Black, White, Red, Green, Blue, Yellow), and the only time they need to think about the appearance is on a yellow background, for the design I posted, it either needs a border, or some other thought has to go into this for any similar colour use as a background... It can be much more expensive to print multiple colours, especially on clothing, which obviously reduces profits.
Still the official logo is really crap.

In selling a product sure, but the Olympics sell themselves. No logo is going to stop those that want to go and no logo is going to make those that don't, go.
Not even the half naked lion could stop the World Cup. Most company's that sponsor the Olympics won't even put that crap on their product. They will use the simple rings logo and put their own branding to it.
