Having been to clubs in New York, Nashville, Houston, Atlanta, D.C., Paris, London, and now Munich, I'm curious as to what other TTers think of the greater Munich club scene in comparison to places they've been before.

Poor - I've had fun, but the scene usually sucks.
Bad - Most cities I've been to have it better than here.
Awful - Bad DJs, annoying people, out of the way locations.
Abysmal - If I hear "I Had The Time Of My Life" one more time in a "club" I may snap;
I think that sums it up nicely!

Yeah, I've come to the conclusion that clubs here suck-arse as well.

yeah, my vote also goes to the lower part of the list. Definately same way better clubs in other places around the world.
However you gotta make the fun yourself, not rely on a club to do it for you. I try to do so, and normally I've great fun going out clubbing in Munich.

It is not so much that the clubs suck, but they are definitely tailored to the younger crowds (18-24). So, the choice is limited. You don't see to many older bavarians putting on their boogy shoes.
In these in between years, when you can no longer pass yourself off as 20something and your just not ready to sit back and listen to accordian music, Munich can be rough to weather. We have older German friends (50+) that complain about that all the time. My in-laws up north have joined a country western boot scootin boogey group just so they can get out and dance with like minded souls.
New York, DC, Chicago, Milwaukee, San Antonio, Tampa, Atlanta, Memphis, Nashville, and even Knoxville had a better variety for the different age groups.
Still, what is here, is 1000% safer than in any of those cities. I may get turned away at the door here occassionally, but it is not likely that I will get attacked in or outside of the clubs here.

If I hear "I Had The Time Of My Life" one more time in a "club" I may snap
nothing against that
I am not a clubbing person at all, so I voted for fair.
But I do agree, that the club scene in Munich is not the best from what I have seen, which is not really much.
But then again, Apparantly I have the worst taste of Munich ever
More interesting:
What is a "good" club? Guess everybody has other definitions.
What makes a scene/music/location "good"?

There is only one way of describing the scene in München: "Fucking awful". It truly is worse than anything i've ever experienced - small towns in the UK have more and better clubs than Munich.
What's more, if you like serious clubbing and want to catch BIG name DJs Munich gets them about once monthly, if that - London will have a big name playing every night and at the weekends will probably have 6 or 7. Munich has an OK nightlife, but clubs don't figure.
Except Nachtgalerie of course. That place is just mustard.
EDIT: And immediately that I hit 'Submit Post', 4004 email me! Careful kids - the German Nachtklub Gestapo are watching you.

I agree, clubs here are pants.
Sure, we all have fun when we go out together and I know there is a certain amount of "it shouldnt matter where you are, its the people you are with"...but come on, for the size of the city and the demographics of the population surely Munich can come up with something better.
I miss Glasgow, Edinburgh and London for clubs. Great choices, wide range of big name DJs playing ALL the time, and a great, fun loving crowd of people filling them. Its the general vibe I think thats different here, its a bit strange really.

In Munich's defence can I just say that most top performing DJs come to Munich. you just have to be bothered to look out for them. In the Drum n bass scene, all the top DJ's have played... Within the last couple of Months, LTJ Bukem, DJ Marky, Doc Scott have all played..
House/ tech. house are also catered for and David Morales has been on a number of occasions...
Hip-Hop? Well, this coming Saturday Mixologists with MC Trip alongside are playing at 1er Liga, and are currently one of the UK's top Hiphop/turntablist/Dnb crews out there...
So they get the music... You just have to be bothered to search for it...

what's it with all the big name DJs bullshit? seriously guys, big names do not guarantee bird shit. And yes, I have seen a couple thank you. Why shell out 20 Euros/$/whatever for a big name who PRODUCES good music but definitely cannot play da chooones...
No no no, names is not what makes a city with a good club scene. Make no mistake, I do dislike MUC clubbing scene as well. For example Stuttgart does better in comparison.
I blame superficial people, too much money etc. for the shitty club scene, definitely NOT the lack of big names.

Good point CodeRed - saw fatboy slim in Copenhagen recently - absolute shit!
Having said that the German obsession with the 80s has just got to be stamped out - forever - that's 20 years ago now man so no fucking excuses - especially for younger folks.

I fully agree. And while there at it, stamp out the fucking return of 80's clothing as well. THAT's something the police could control...

I think it's a wee bit cruel on the Munich club scene really. Maybe it isn't as good as some
other cities (and i challenge you to count them on more than a couple of hands) but there IS something here for everyone!
The problem of the "in-betweenies", no longer kids but not ready for bayerische Volksmusik) is easily covered in the
"mainstream" by a slew of "Over 30s" nights that are running in Munich at the moment.
That's the hint: Club Nights! Looking at the Munich club scene there are very few that offer the same atmosphere, music or prices each night.
So there's student nights, R+B nights, singles nights, punk nights etc etc etc
I suspect that people wh think that Munich club nights are all the same are spending too much time around
Münchner Freiheit, get a copy of Prinz or read the loads of posters around town.
As for "star" DJs: Rubbish! I've paid out decent money and had a shite time and then danced my bollocks off to semi - amateurs playing in someones front room!

Here here!!!
You don't need to be a big name DJ to play good music...
I could say that the DJs here have no idea how to play to the crowd.. but sadly I'd be wrong.. Take the milchbar for example.. Shite DJs but the munich crowd seem to love it (are there no fire regulations in germany concerning the max capacity of a club either??)
Dodgy remixes of 6 year old charty house records, axel-f repeated 10 times over the period of the night, drum n' bass remixes of california dreaming and I kid you not - love me do by the beetles... and oh yes... that classic house mix of 'the time of my life'!!!
It wasn't too bad the first time I went with a few old classics I hadn't heard for ages.. Problem is, they seem to play the same shite in the same order every week.. and thats not just at the milchbar.. other clubs seem to have exactly the same rundown each week.. 4004, even atomic cafe..
Specialist club nights seem to be covered.. There just seems a lack of imagination and dignity in the more mainstream stuff... Have to say though.. the locals seem to love it

When comparing Munich to other cities it's also worth remembering that it is a much smaller place than many which have been mentioned. Not all, granted, but many. Clubs get better if they have more competition to feed off. Of course the scene in London, New York et al will be superior.
Anyway I hate nightclubs so I'm off for some meatballs now.
