What is "Strommast" in English?

Updated answer: "Utility pole"

You know, the things, the big wooden poles, holding up all those wires? Actually I guess sometimes they're metal too, but what the hell do you call them in English? Leo says "power pole," but that doesn't sound right. Argh, I know that I know this, I can't believe I've forgotten it. Can someone please help?

Now that I think of it, this is probably one of those things that lends itself to regional differences, so that'd be interesting to know too: do Americans, Australians, etc. have a different name for this?

utility pole
mere
my roommate and i aren't sure.

electrical pole, power pole, the lines are power lines...

Unless it's a telephone pole, people usually differentiate.

Then people just say "utility pole."

right, power lines I had, but I couldn't remember the pole-things. Phone pole sounds familiar, but what if they're not just for phones? Wow, I never thought I'd have to think about this. Thanks peeps, I'll use "utility pole." That sounds professional...ish.

I think my two posts together were confusing. If it's for phones, "telephone (or phone) pole." For power, "utility pole." And yes, it might even sound professional without the "ish!" smile.gif

POLE!?...UTILITY!?...blergh..Amis...

Yeah, I was thinking that too. I'd probably go for 'electricity pole', but they're not so common in the UK. 'Telegraph pole' if it's for telephones only (how old is that?). And of course the big metal ones out in the country for the main power lines are '(electricity) pylons'.

As an electrician, I call them power poles. Naturally if they also carry telephone and other cables in addition to power, then utility pole is appropriate.

The big metal ones are called Pylons in Britain. The ones that carry more than one electric line. The wooden ones are called electric posts. As in a wooden post.

If it's wires as in phone lines n things it's called a telegraph pole in the UK.

Never, ever heard of a utility pole.
