anyone know a place beside saturn to buy RAM memory for a laptop in berlin? is there a J&R, CompUSA equivalent, i.e. bigger selection than saturn? i could order from amazon.de but i'd rather be sure it's exactly what i need...

Check for a store near you. I'm not sure if this what you're looking for but, these guys certainly know a bit more than your average Saturn/Media Markt guys. Conrad is also another decent place. http://www1.conrad.de/scripts/wgate/zcop_b...amp;navi=oben_2

Litec Computer, one of Munichs better computer component shops, have a comprehensive online store, fantastic prices and will deliver.

OP, wants to look, see, touch, test said memory to make sure it works before they buy it, so an online purchase is out of the question
as already mentioned. wink.gif

thanks, guys...this is helpful. actually i don't mind ordering online it's just that the sites aren't very specific about all the specs (including the ones you guys mentioned). i'm looking for a 1GB SDRAM PC2700 (333MHz). amazon.de for instance sells a PNY one that's priced nicely (83 euro), but it doesn't mention pin config. i got nervous cause i noticed they were selling a similar kingston one which a reviewer mentioned was 184-pin. i need SODIMM 200-pin. if someone out there is knowledgeable about this stuff: is a DRAM SODIMM module running at 333MHz ALWAYS 200-pin? is the kingston one 184 cause it's DIMM and not SODIMM?
and one more thing if you follow me so far: the CL value just refers to the speed (and thus quality) and is not a compatibility issue, right? the factory RAM in my laptop now says CL=2.5, but there's no reason a CL=3 wouldn't work in my computer, right?

sorry about this, probably these are questions for another forum and not one about germany smile.gif
i just thought since we're on the topic someone might know...

thanks again!

Post your notebook Make and model. But from the specs you posted, what you need is NOT a SDRAM SODIMM. What you need is a DDR-SODIMM (Not DDR2)
running at PC2700/DDR333. These SODIMMS are all 200 Pin as that is the standard format for DDR SODIMMS. Old SDRAM SODIMMS are all 144 pin
Only full size DDR chips are 184 pin. (The kind that go in a normal desktop PC).. This is exactly the part you need...
mstevenson74
thanks darkknight, that's really helpful, i appreciate it...

you're right, i miswrote when i said just "SDRAM". what i need is a DDR-SDRAM PC2700 (this is what the compaq website says). i thought all DDR's are SDRAM's, but not vice versa, or is that not right?

for the record, it's a Compaq Presario R3230US.

the part i was considering buying from amazon.de is at:
http://www.amazon.de/PNY-PC333-PC2700-Note...993&sr=1-16

from what you said, all DDR PC2700 SODIMM's are 200-pin, so this qualifies. but then again, the link you sent me is a CL2.5 vs. the amazon one which is CL3, so it's probably worth the few extra euros.

Thanks again! tongue.gif

Yes, CL2.5 is just a wee bit faster, but I really don't think you see a difference. It does help though to match any existing memory chips (CL 2.5/3.0)
