Howdi,
I'm moving to Germany in July and will be living in a small country town in southern Germany. Which means I'm currently up all night worrying about how I will get the next Harry Potter when it comes out.
Does the post come on a Saturday? e.g. any point ordering from Amazon.de? Would the big cities like Frankfurt have shops with an English language release?
And, please, I know I'm a sad git. By all means tease me mercilessly... and then answer the question.

Yeah, there will probably even be some bookstores that open at midnight to sell it, so no worries.

You can order it at Amazon and they guarantee a Saturday delivery (but only do that if you are home all day, you don't want to come home from grocery shopping and find a note from the mailman saying you can pick it up at the post office on Monday).

Hugendubel a day or two after it was released. I'm sure any of your local bookstores will do the same.

@ Mariposa: These are not official openings so the bookstores stage "parties" for which you need an invitation (to be picked up for free at the store during opening hours).
By all means, order off Amazon, they deliver on release day.

Ah okay, I never bothered to go to any of them. I just know we (I work at a bookstore) are not doing this, but will have the book on the day it comes out. I will probably just pick up my copy at work, since I work on Saturdays anyway. (Thankfully not in the store but administration... I feel for anyone who has to work in the store that day.)

I didn't have an invitation for the German release day but turned up anyway. An elderly gent was just leaving with his wife and a brand new copy of the Order of the Phoenix (German), so I asked him to go back inside and buy another one for me, which he did. I thanked him prettily, asked his wife for permission and kissed his cheek. He was very pleased
Then some bastard stole the book while we were renovating Haggis Junior's room and it was in the stairwell in a crate. I hope whoever did it dropped it on every single one of his toes.

Major bookstores will have some copies of the English version. And there's Amazon.de (you can use your US/UK Amazon account, too... just go to the German site and log in with your usual user name and password). They have a whole section of English books. I've already pre-ordered Deathly Hallows. Don't know if we'll get the US version or the UK version, though. When I ordered Half-Blood Prince (way after release) on Amazon.de I got the US version. There's not much difference. It says "booger" instead of "bogey". That's about all, I think.
Or you could commit pure sacrilege and try reading it in German. (I've had this suggested to me to help my German learning. Ha! Not a chance in hell!)
Mariposa
May 30 2007, 11:02 am
Which version you get depends on which version you order (they have different ISBNs), but as far as I know Amazon always ships out the UK version on the release day, and you can order either the regular edition or the adult edition (only difference is the cover).
I am pretty sure most bookstores will have plenty of copies in stock.

I don't think anyone here who does understand German is tempted to read it in German, just because it will not be released in German until the end of October.

Bucher Pustet(Regensburg) sold book six the day it was released in english it will not be a problem unless there are no mail boxes and they do not read there. In such case...move.

Bigger chains, like
Hugendubel or Thalia, or whichever ones you have in your city. Go to a store and ask if they are doing one of those early opening parties, they should know by now.

I just realized that I will be in Munich for the release of HP7 and that's sort of unacceptable. Is it possible to find an English copy of the book that weekend? Where are the English-language bookstores here, and will the book even be here in English the day of the release?

If you are quick and have an Amazon account you can have it delivered to an alternative address. Order from amazon.de to avoid international shipping costs. By the way, if you order to an alternative address you must pay by creditcard and not on invoice. It will be delivered on 21 July.

Despite tight security, Harry Potter book leaked on InternetQUOTE (Boston Globe)
Despite intense international security, the entire text of ‘‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’’ has been leaked on the Internet, four days before its official release at 12:01 a.m. Saturday. Photographs of what appears to be every page of the 784-page book were posted Tuesday on several file-sharing sites and then posted openly as photos on Internet pages. In the photos, the book is held open on a carpet with one hand. Some of the text is blurry, but most of it —including the ending and the fate of the main character — is clearly legible.

Can people please keep this topic spoiler-free, even though it has been leaked? I do not want the last book spoiled for me and neither does anyone else, I assume.
(This is not directed at anyone, just preemptive.)

If Hogwarts was like any traditional British public school, the ending would already be obvious to most people:
Hermione would figure prominently on the front cover of Hello magazine as a B-list celebrity, until a hot video of her and Ginny Weasly appears on the internet, thus catapulting her to the A-list. She'll spend most of her twenties popping in and out of various rehab clinics until she's sent to prison for flying a broomstick while on probation for a drink-flying charge.
Ron would go up to Oxford University to read minor classics before being sent down for selling cocaine to fellow students. In despair, his parents pack him off to Sandhurst and a potential career in the Army. These plans backfire when he's discovered cavorting naked in the college grounds with three strapping youths from the Bulgarian quidditch team and Dolly the Sheep, the unfortunate mascot of the 23rd Little Whinging Foot Regiment. A few years later he sparks an international whodunnit when his clothes are found in a pile on a remote Californian beach with a set of footprints leading towards the sea.
Harry will retire to a life of complete obscurity in Surrey as a chartered surveyor, marrying Ms Edwina Throgmorton. Five years later, they'll divorce citing "irreconcilable difficulties on account of his facial disfigurement in the forehead area".
Hagrid will be made redundant as part of the school's attempts to introduce much-needed efficiency and performance improvements. Despite this, Hogwarts will go on to fail its OFSTED inspection for a record 12th year in a row.
Dumbledore will be arrested for molesting the young boys in his care after Cedric Diggory makes certain allegations on breakfast TV. At the time of the arrests, Severus Snape will suddenly disappear - only to be arrested two years later when living in a shack in Thailand, surrounded by young boys. His defence in court that "I was merely demonstrating how to wave my wand" fails to convince the judge and he is sentenced to eight years solitary confinement.
Draco Malfoy wins a seat in Parliament representing the OWL (Other Working Labour) Party. He becomes Prime Minister seven years later and immediately appoints Vincent Crabbe and Gregory Goyle to his cabinet in a stunning display of croneyism. Ten years later he resigns as Prime Minister to become the official peace envoy to Azkaban.
Nymphadora Tonks earns a multi-million dollar fortune as a pole-dancer in Las Vegas.
Dobby the Elf appears in a few minor gameshows on cable TV before setting up a second-hand car sales business in Essex.

BUT, and I really mean this, everyone:
Please do NOT post any spoilers. That is like telling a kid there is no Santa Claus on the Night Before Christmas. If you have to be a spoilsport and link, say so. Nothing compares to sitting down with a new book, opening it, sniffing the new book smell, turning the first pages, reading the dedication and table of contents and then plunging into the story.
