Going to the doctors for an X-ray

Advice, experiences, recommendations, etc.

Hello there, a medical query for anyone in the know out there in Berlin. I had an x-ray done a few weeks ago on an botched toe at A&E. It's not really improving and was going to get a follow up x-ray to make sure nothing was missed. Does anyone know if doctors can x-ray at their practice (and if so, perhaps you could recommend one-I live in Prenzl'Berg) or do I have to go to A&E again? I'm not sure how private GPs work as regards E111/Krankenkasse/pay in cash either so any enlightening info would be great. Cheers, Clare.

Hi Clare,

German doctors can do x-rays at their practice. If they got the equipment of course. But more likely a doctor will send you to a special x-ray practice. Any hospital will do the examination and x-ray.
But I have now idea how the payment is made... I'm in possession of full medical insurance... Dunno how this will managed in your case...
Can only give a recommendation in Zehlendorf... sorry live down here

Any questions? Don't be afraid to ask.

Hope I was of assistance

Take care

Theres a gp practice at Sonntagstrasse 1, right by S bahn Ostkreuz. Sorry i cant remember the name of it, but they have X-ray facilities and are sort of orthopaedic- oriented. And very nice, speak some English.
you need obviously E111 card (which will puzzle them entirely as it has no krankenkasse details on the back) and your passport, and as far as i can tell, they should know which German Krankenkasse to bill it to. Its Barmer, incidentally. www.barmer.de
Any further qs if i can help, pm me as my internet's a bit ropey at the moment so im not often on TT right now.

Oh and it also occurred to me, that you should expect to pay a praxisgebuehr- thats a fee of €10 per quarter but you only pay it if you use their services within the quarter, so if you never go back there, you only pay it once.

Actually, you obviously don't, as the E111 form was retired in January 2006 when it was replaced by the EHIC card.
