Hello,
I have read the posts on importing dogs to Germany but they all appear to be related to bringing dogs from the US. I will be bringing mine from Korea into Canada for two months and then onto Germany. I rescued him here in Seoul from a dog shelter where he was about to be euthanized. He is now a happy and well-adjusted little guy so there is no way I would even consider leaving him or having him quarantined.
My dog weighs 7kg(14lbs) and will have to be in excess baggage. He has a 15 digit microchip that has been implanted here in Korea which is compatible with European standards. He has had all of his shots, including rabies, and I have the batch number and expiration dates for all vaccines. He has also been neutered and gets his heartworm medication each month.
I am confused on a couple of points though. My vet here in Korea says that he needs bloodtests to prove that his rabies antibody level is up to par. To have this certified in Korea, his bloodwork is sent to Belgium and approved and then a certificate is sent back here to the vet in Korea. This is going to cost about $400 USD but if it is what he needs then I will happily pay for it. I was then reading more about this online and it says that the test must be done in Canada as that is where he will be entering Germany from, not Korea. It also states online that a first satisfactory result test must be performed six months prior to his entry and then again right before his entry, proving that he has been ok for that entire six month period. I am not sure if I go ahead and get the bloodwork done here in Korea or if I should wait until I return to Canada in August and have it done there. Is the bloodwork even needed?
Also, about moving to Germany in general. I used to live in a smaller town in Germany about 5 years ago and have always dreamed of living in Berlin or one of the other larger cities. I am Canadian but I also have an EU passport through the UK so work permits will not be a problem. I am an English teacher so I am considering just picking up and coming to Berlin (or another large city) around mid-late October. I am not looking to make a fortune or to save but would like to earn enough of course to live on. I do have some savings so I would like to come in, rent an apartment and look for work once I am on the ground.
Can anyone give me advice on how to get started or recommend which city would be the easiest to get going in? How much money I should have to keep me going for a few months? As I said, I would love to live in Berlin but would also consider other cities as well. I have been in Korea for the past five years so this is quite a big transition for me and I am a little nervous. I don't speak much German either but I am studying now in preparation for the move. I have always wanted to return to Germany and now seems to be the time to do so.
Any and all advice is much appreciated!
