Once you know your IBAN & SWIFT numbers for your account in UK, it is a piece of piss to set up a transfer from any EU bank to any other EU bank.

Do a search for "IBAN"; this has been discussed at some length already, although the short answer to your question is "it doesn't matter" because all banks offer free international transfers. The bigger issue is which bank you have in the UK, because the rate of exchange that they apply will determine the Sterling value of the transfer. Nationwide are the best, any of the Big Four are bad news - HSBC even reportedly
charge(d) you to put the money into your account!

It's even easier if you set up an online banking account as well.

only within the European Union! not Germany to U.S., for example.

hey there, just joined the site and was interested to see what some of you had to say on the topic of tranferring money to the UK. I have to do this regularly. I live in the uk (most of the time) but earn in Germany. I was informed by Volksbank that at the negotiations in Nice, the UK govt. opted out of the proposal to end transfer fees on interbank transfers within the EU and that if I felt I was being shortchanged, then I should take the matter up with my bank in the UK. When I confronted them (UK bank) with the details of the extent of the problem, they just kinda stone-walled me. The problem persisted over a period of about eighteen months - and my losses were accumulating. I'm pretty sure they were skimming, but how do you prove it? In the end I opened an account with an FX trading company who take a very small commission, teeny in fact. Its easy to set up an account with them and they somehow manage to get the cash transferred faster. If you are transferring anything over 500 euros/mth, your beating the bank!

There's no such thing as "free". You have to look at the rate of exchange they are applying.

Suddenly it dawns that all the "opt outs" from EU stuff where where HMG is "batting for Britain" they are really batting for big business...
