Okra, yellow squash, and other "southern" foods

Where to buy in Germany, and near Stuttgart

Hi, I live in Ludwigsburg, just outside Stuttgart. I'm from North Carolina. It's getting to be summer and I'm missing some of my favorite summer foods from the "South", like okra! I haven't seen it in any supermarkets. Is it possible to find fresh okra in Germany, especially around Stuttgart? Would a farmers' market, or something like that, have it? I'm also looking for yellow squash. I've seen a lot of zucchini squash but no yellow squash. Any thoughts? Is it too early for it here? Thanks!!

Go to a Turkish market. That is where I get mine in Munich. Okra will be easy. Yellow crooked neck squash will be a bit more difficult, but not impossible.

dunno about stuttgart, but in munich you can get it in all the turkish / kurdish shops around the main station
i guess you must have turkish supermarkets in stuttgart, so try there

Wow, thanks for the quick replies! There's a Turkish market in my neighborhood. I'll check out their produce section. I know they have something like canned pickled okra (not my favorite..) so maybe they will have it fresh as well. I may just have to forgo the squash. Zucchini is an okay substitute. Thanks!

Markthalle in Stuttgart should still have an Indian/Asian stall and certainly Turkish stands, you could also try the three Indian/Asian stores listed here.

in the summer, i've always been able to find squash at farmer's markets (never in the supermarket though).

i'm from the south, too, and also miss these southern specialties!

I have seen a yellow Zucchini in markets that substitutes for " crooked neck " squash.
The Turkish canned Okra makes wonderful Okra soup.

I'm pretty sure that I've seen yellow squash at the Markthalle in Stuttgart previously mentioned, albeit at a premium price!

I found okra at the Markthalle in Stuttgart. It is 1.80 euro for 100 grams. Kinda small, but I guess it's early in the season.

Has anyone found any black-eyed peas or collard greens?

You can find black-eyed peas in the dried bean section of many supermarkets. As for collards, grünkohl is close enough. Just throw in a chunk of fatback, an onion and a splash of vinegar. Goes great with beans and cornbread.

yuck.
about 2 months ago i tried collard greens and thought it was gross. now wilted spinach or chard on the other hand can be quite tasty especially if you use a touch of balsamic and/or honey.

also grits are nasty especially butter grits.

but then again you Southerners probably think Cheese Curds (especially fried cheese curds) are gross so each there own i suppose.
Wed. i did have a tasty (heart attack inducing) meal of cheese curds and hushpuppies with a beer to wash it all done.

I think turnip greens (without turnips) are better than collards. They're not tough like collards can be. Chard is good too.
Grits are great! They have to be cooked properly so they are soft and not too, well, "gritty". Polenta is a decent substitute for grits, kind of like cheese grits (yum!) I think Kaufland has polenta, probably other places have it as well. Rather easy to find around Stuttgart.

Turkish okras that are sold in glass containers are of better quality than the canned ones.

polenta is quite tastey.
