Basically is anyone up for starting a dodgeball group, I am talking the rubbish you played at school, so hardcore ball throwing action.
tsquare
Are you serious, or just looking to see how many people will answer?? Dodgeball. Huh. What kind of ball? I mean, would it be the burn-the-skin-as-it-deflects type or more Nerffy? Against a wall, just to add the crush factor?

Maybe...
Lavender Rain
I was in a dodgeball match on Sunday right here on TT laugh.gif .
joe in munich
I am serious about it I have not thought about details yet but it would be awesome.
Ruthie
I always get nose bleeds when smacked in the face by red rubber balls -- not fond memories of elementary school -- at least now I don´t have glasses anymore, that really hurt like a mofo.
L8knight
Can we wear spandex outfits like the movie? smile.gif
oRoD
Ok, I am more than down for a game of dodgeball. I will talk so much trash and get everyone rowdied up!

I think a Volleyball ball will be ideal, seeing how the Utility balls we played with at school in North America are all but non-existent here.

If enough people actually reply to this, I think a hysterical and truly fun game can be organized. Ladies and gents, of course, with the Englische Garten the ideal location. We could have a North America Vs. The World battle. Or Guys Vs. Girls. Or Mix and match.

Bottom line, let's do it!

If none of you has ever done so... participating in dodgeball leagues back in the states is a great social event in towns with younger populations (i.e. Baltimore). These things actually do catch on pretty well, and I am wholeheartedly throwing my support behind this one!
eriiki tubbs
I'm totally down for this as well, sounds like a lot of fun!
tsquare
All right, Joe, When're we playing?
oRoD
I'm taking over...

Saturday June 9, 2007

and/or

Sunday June 10, 2007

Weather permitting, of course.

Exact location TBD.

Cool?
mrwilson
I'll play! Been playing for a few years back home before I came here. I'm in dodgeball withdrawal.

edit: volleyball will suck. can't throw it very hard and it's easy to catch. I don't know how it works here, but back home we called around and talked to a school to see where and how they get their requipment. We ended up getting way better balls than we did in grade school. thicker rubber so the ball doesn't warp easily and the rubber was of a higher grade for better grip.

why would the weather play a factor? just play in a gym no? usually if someone is a member of a club or gym, they can rent the gym at a discounted rate vs renting it as a public non-member.
tsquare
Outside, for sure!! I could play either day - except for Sunday after 2...that's reserved for ultimate frisbee
tsquare
I see you prowling around, Whimsical Delight. You know you want to play...
oRoD
I'd rather play with Utility balls as well. I organized a game a few years ago and did just that, asked the local elementary school to borrow their Utility balls from their Gym equipment.

It'd be much more fun to play outdoors, setting up boundaries. Sure we might end up chasing the ball here and there, but it's a far better social environment. Think of the spectators and admirers!

I understand not being able to whip a volleyball. If you have access to the red rubber ones, more power to you!

Nice, this thing's taking shape!

~O
oRoD
* Note: the game I organized a few years ago was back home in Canada... thus, no sources for Utility balls in Munich.
tsquare
I have an elementary school PE ball - I'm guessing that's the same as a utility ball?
oRoD
The rubber red ones? Just one? Big/small/throwable?

FANTASTIC!
tsquare
I've got connections...what do we want (apart from throwable)? Big? Small? What if it's blue?
oRoD
One big and two throwable (with one hand). Inflated enough to bounce, but not too full to the point where it slips when trying to grip with one hand. Wow, I'm annoyingly specific. It's just that I cannot believe this event can and will actually happen.

Connections? Now THOSE are some serious connections. Good on ya.

Blue is fine. I remember blue ones as well, back in the 80s.

~O
tsquare
Okay, I'll see what I can do. What about 2 PM on Saturday, 9 June?
joe in munich
Well my creation has been a success I will check my dates etc however there is a chance that on that saturday I may be out of town for something that I actually cant miss but we will see, anyhow I am down for the sunday. So dodgeball either day followed by a few Maß to help heal the wounds.
joe in munich
What is the Uniform??? Rod we can talk about this over the 24 hours but we should tell me what sort of thing to wear.
Whimsical_Delight
Aright tsquare... you got me...

I'm in, let's play some dodgeball!

Personally, I like the Full-body spandex idea, where can we get those uniforms?
big_al75
Well - looks like it's really taking off boys - considering my broken leg is freshly healed - I am officially volunteering myself as the ref - gonna buy me a shiny new whistle!

IT'S DODGING TIME!!!
mrwilson
Count me in.

We should make rules. Please change/ammend as you see fit. These are the rules I abided by in the dodgeball league I was in back in Canada. These are by no means the official rules, unless nobody has objections.

* There are 6 balls in play.
* If there's a middle line, if you step on or over the line, you're out.
* Cannot hold more than 1 ball at a time.
* Cannot hold a ball for more than 10 seconds (this is a courtesy rule to ensure pace of game -it's a general rule that is only enforced when it's more than obvious a person has been milking a ball forever and a day)
* No head shots (if you do, you're out for one or two games -games usually never last more than 5 minutes). This rule does not apply to people ducking/dodging because if a person's head is waist-high, it's hard to avoid. i.e. you're asking for it.
* If you throw a ball and another person catches it, the thrower is out. The person who caught the ball gets a player on his/her team back in play in a FIFO order (First In First Out - Prevents cheating though this is only for fun so I suspect winning will not be priority).
* If the ball makes contact with a body first, it is only live for that one touch i.e. I throw. Person X on the other team tries to catch it and fails. The ball flings in the air and Person Y who is also on the other team catches it before it hits the ground. I am still in play, Person X is out (because the ball was live for initial contact and he failed) and nothing happens to Person Y (Person Y is still in play).
* If the ball makes initial contact with anything other than a body (e.g. the ground, another ball, etc), it's considered a dead ball.
* If you are the last person on a team, you must stand in a smaller area of your side of the court to promote pace of game.
* If you are holding a ball and someone throws a ball at you, if you wish to catch the ball, you cannot drop the ball that you have posession of. You must make an effort to throw the ball forwards (i.e. ball must make initial contact past the middle line) in order for your catch to count. Otherwise you are out. I don't know if you want to implement this rule -it's usually pretty controversial.

Dunno if I explained them clear enough. i think this will be ridiculously hard to play outdoors with no boards or anything preventing the balls from going OOB. A person can throw them just as far and hard as a soccer ball. I'll play outdoors, but I suggest indoor.s
joe in munich
So we need to work out how many people are going to be coming???
tsquare
Yep and a date.
oRoD
Saturday might be rough.

How about Sunday? Man I wished the weather was hotter.

tsquare: any word on the balls?

mrwilson: thanks for the rules? Were you a gym teachder back in Canada? Where in Canada are you from?

We might have to make couple exceptions to the rules. Also, indoors would be more "proper" but the whole idea is to be outdoors and, well, show off!

~O
tsquare
Balls are ready. I have to admit, though, all those rules! Damn! What about Sunday noon? Only problem is I can't hang out afterwards due to ultimate frisbee at 2. Yes. It's all about me. But, I'd be up for playing!
joe in munich
Rod why not on saturday. you get my hopes up and then destroy them again. it hurts. is this pay back for... you know the thing
oRoD
Saturday is supposed to be the Goodbye party for one of the swedes. Can't ditch that, I don't think. Thus, Sunday. But noon is a tad late, especially if tsquare wants to run away to Ultimate. You're not gonna be one of those kids who takes his balls with him (yes, I know I set myself up for a joke), are you?

No it's not punishment. Punishment will be me taking you out of the first dodgeball game with my first posession of the ball!

People, start spreading the word! Guys/girls...all welcome.

Will scout for locations on Saturday. Check back on the weekend for EXACT locations.

Incoming calls are free, so I'll have no problem taking crank calls. Call if necessary: 0-176-64 11 86 82.

~Rod
oRoD
Ok, so I just learned that the event that was been holding me back from being able to participate on Saturday begins at 4:30 pm...IN the Englscher Garten. Accordingly, I/we could possibly be able to play Dodgeball on Saturday...IN the Englischer Garten.

Consensus from others? Seriously, who's playing? Hands up! Ok, kidding about that. Just reply saying you're in.

Time: 11am or noon? I can easily play for 4 or 5-hours!

HOWEVER, the forecast isn't looking to optimal. I'd also play indoors, if anyone knows/can get a place. I don't want to wait another week or 2-weeks. Let's finalize this and play!

11 or 12 doesn't matter, but will indeed be taking my balls with me at 3:30! Sorry! (I can't wait to see how they react when I show up at the Bayerischer Hof at 4 with a bag full of dodgeballs).
Mook32
Does anyone have the Über-American Films Dodgeball Training video! That would help alot! : )
mrwilson
excuse my ignorance, but how do you guys expect to play outside? if you throw it at a person (assuming you're gonna try and whip it), if it's too hard for a person to catch, he's gonna let it go. in that case the ball goes out of bounds and rolls maybe 50 feet away. 1 ball down. Who's going to get the ball?

that will kill the game imo. people will throw the first ball and they'll all go out of bounds. then the game will essentially be put on hold for 5 minutes while people run to retrieve the balls. they'll throw it again and the same process will occur.

am I missing something or will this not be the case?

From my experience, the game won't last much more than an hour. In the league I played in, people were worn out by the time the hour was up. Not trying to rain on anybody's parade, just stating that's what I noticed from my experience so plan for an hour. if it goes longer, then hey, it goes longer. Playing for more than an hour really ends up putting a big strain on your shoulder, rotator cuff and elbow. might wanna take it easy the first game to prevent injury. people don't give dodgeball enough credit. it's a high impact sport similar to basketball. lots of stops, starts, rotations, etc.

nope. I played in a dodgeball league back in Canada (Edmonton, Alberta) smile.gif

I'm honestly not trying to piss on people's parades, but imo, the main point is to have fun. fetching a ball everytime it's throw is not ideal. People can whip the balls pretty hard -we've throw the balls so hard they've fractured people's ribs (mind you in this case, they weren't paying attention), dislocated fingers, gave people bloody noses (accidentally of course), etc. So if you can throw them that hard, the balls go pretty far. Combine that with the fact that people can't always have 100% accuracy. You'll be surprised how hard it is to hit someone with a ball 40-50 feet away. Just more balls to fetch.

but I do realize that my opnions are boarderlining bitching right now since I'm not offering any solutions. I wish I could, but I can't. I don't know of any facilities or speak a lick of deutsch (I just arrived in Munich less than two months ago). Just trying to give people some food for though.

With that said, if someone makes a date, I'll be there to help fetch balls smile.gif
oRoD
Thoughts:

If it's a big group of us playing, a lot of people will be hit and get out early on; it's bound to bounce off someone. Then, those people get stand at "guards" or ball people. PLUS, when I played back in the 80s, if you got hit, you went behind the boudaries on the OPPOSITE side and tried to get back in the game back hitting someone on the opposite team. Then you'd re-join your own side. Follow? With that, everybody would be fetching for the ball. There's bound to be spectators, the ball won't go too far. Plus, perhaps we can play somewhere somewhat enclosed. But when Iplayed outdoors a few years ago, fetching balls wasn't too big of an issue.

My money's on mrwislon taking someone's face off. Seems intense already! Shotgun on HIS team! Dude's been in a league!

So I've been confused about which week were planning on playing. Now I'm back with it. SUNDAY June 10, 2007...Time: TBD. I've been told that there is a big concert festival in Munich that weekend. Thus, there will likely be a better turn-out if it was held on Sunday. The time depends on tsquare to some degree.
Carm
you guys could try an area that is used for basketball or soccer that has a chainlinked fence around it, so you don't lose your balls.
Some of the playgrounds have fenced off areas.
joe in munich
I would prefer not to play on a concrete surface as I want to dive around to get out of the way of people balls but hey a bit of pain never hurt anyone.
Whimsical_Delight
What about 12:30 on Sat? A few of us play Frisbee at 2, and that would give everyone plenty of time, plus then the gardens wouldn't be too full yet!
joe in munich
We agreed about playing it next week originally so it would be good if we could stick to that as i said previously I am not here this weekend
tsquare
Clearly we need a little more time to organize ourselves.

I suggest NEXT Sunday, 12 noon, Location TBD, with a short organizational meeting at the Hofbraukeller Biergarten (Mook, you're going to have a laugh at that location) this coming Monday, 4 June at 7pm.

We're not getting anywhere with this posting stuff - especially regarding rules and other specifics.

I think it'd be best to come to some conclusions and post the concrete results. Otherwise, if we throw it together and it's a mess, no one's going to show up again.

Joe? Whimsy? oRoD? mrwilson? Mook? Anyone else?
Whimsical_Delight
Wow, I really have to read things before I press the post button... I did mean next SUNDAY the tenth of June, but I guess that doesn't matter now if we meet on monday...
I will have to see if I can make it on monday, but I will try!
tsquare
Yeah crap. And I was trying to be so authoritative and clear. NEXT Sunday, 10 June, 12 noon, Location TBD

see, and this is where organization matters most.

you can't necesarily play the way you did back in the 80's like in grade school. that's not to say that it's not possible -I've never played outside so I have no basis for comparison.

but if i were to imagine playing outside, I think it would mainly depend on how many people show up. typically we played 6 per team with subs and you can divisde the teams accordingly based on how many people show up... can be 6-8 people a side and trust me, any more than that is a party. As a reuslt, if there are more people, we can make a third team and the odd team will sit and we'll play the winning team sticks (king of the court). Having lots of people per side reduces pace of game significantly and people get bored. Also having lots of people per side also increases injury as your view is constantly obstructed. If someone moves out of the way, you have no notice and may possibly get hit in the face. Playing with a limited number of people per team also, and I sound like a broken record here, increases the pace of game so that the sitting team (if there is one) doesn't tend to sit for more than 5 minutes.

If you are out, you are out -you go sit out of bounds. The only way you can come back in is if someone on your team catches a ball thrown by the opposite team without it touching anything first. In other words, you can't get back in by hitting someone -we called this version Swedish dodgeball. We don't play swedish for a good reason and that reason is because of injuries. You can throw a ball a lot harder as an adult than when you were a kid. Having someone throw a ball at full force from the front and back, from my experience, results in a lot of dislocated fingers and head shots (i.e. broken glasses and the sort).

With that said, there's no reason why we can't switch up the rules. Sometimes for half an hour we'll play swedish and for another half hour we'll play "normal rules" (rules as I described). We just call it normal because I've played with 3 different leagues that are mutually exclusive from one another and for some reason they all had the same rules so something about them has to work. Just seems to be the standard is all.

My apologies, I really don't mean to seem like a know it all or bully when it comes to this. I am merely speaking from experience and giving my proverbial $0.02. I am simply stating that my words are merely suggestions and as such, nobody has to follow what I say and what I say should be taken with a grain of salt. If people want to do it a different way, then hey, free world. Why not?

So there are my suggestions. I can make the beer gardens on Monday as well smile.gif

so is this solidified? done deal?

since I've never met you guys, how do I know who to look for?

p.s/ who has the balls again? also, if we're serious about keeping this going for the summer, maybe we can get everybody to chip in 5 or 10 euros so we can buy those snazzy balls as posted in one of the earlier pages? just a thought.
joe in munich
Ok well monday should work for me then we can get things clarified.
tsquare
You must type fast, mrwilson.

See you at the Hofbraukeller. I'll sit on the right side, near Sausalito's or however you spell it. I will be the one with the really long blonde hair speaking English. Unless I'm alone. Then I'll be the one with the really long blonde hair beating off all of the German men.
