Or maybe she wears heels on one foot and goes barefoot on the other. Now that's a challenge.

Not if you drive an automatic.

Just saw someone today cycling on Leopoldstr. with one shoe on and the other barefoot.

Must be a scorcher today!

Is Birkenstock considered flip flop? In my opinion, yes. And they are mostly without backstrap. Not only are they comfortable (I've become too German

), even orthopaedics recommend them so surely driving with one of these are acceptable and legal. I love driving in them too.

Personally, I either drive in "sicherheitsschuhe" or barefoot - having kicked off my Birkenstocks, but being sure that they can“t slip forwards under the pedals and prevent me from braking if necessary.
What I personally hate to see is a woman wearing high heels which she has obviously worn an awful lot to drive in, and where the colouring all the way up the back of the heel has been scratched away from sitting in the "driving position" - it just looks ugly to me!

I think you can just blow by german police checkpoints if you're wearing
these ... especially with a dark navy blue suit.
Birkenstocks used to make me angry, but not anymore now that all of my vitriol is directed at flesh-tone, shovel-tipped, babyshit brown and/or fleshtone "business" shoes.

Hasn't anyone been to a US beach town? The police think something is up if you ARE wearing shoes while driving.

I think driving barefoot you have absolute control of how much pressure you put on the pedals - when I wear my sicherheitsschuhe I have to try and remember not to push down too hard :-)
