Hey,
just wondering what clothes I should pack for my year in Munich? Well, summer clothes that is. Luckily my internship company doesn't require a suit but obviously can't wear trackies... hehe.
Um..., basically what's the weather like in Munich? I know I can look at average temperatures, but that doesn't give you a feel for what it's like to commute around the city and what not.
Thanks

I find it really humid here in the summers and air con is not everywhere, so wear clothes that breathe and you feel comfortable it.

hmm i don't find it humid there! but i agree air conditioning is hard to come by. Also though some days it'll be nice, warm, summerlike while others it's cold shilly (pants weather).

If you're planning to commute around the city in the middle of summer via public transport, you might want to invest in some of that balm coroners put under there noses to help you cope with the sometimes overwhelming stench of body odor. Other than that, ditto what Carm said.

Also, note that last August was colder than a witch's titty...so you gotta have more than just a t-shirt, shorts and sandals sometimes.
I freeze fairly easily, but don't expect it to be really warm every day. I also work outdoors (tour guide), so I guess I keep track of the weather more than most...temps can and do vary quite a bit over the summer. You WILL very likely need long pants, a sweatshirt, and a pair of decent walking shoes.

yep...summers are kinda unpredictable here... last July was like the hottest July with most days of sun in 100 yrs or something... and then as soon as August 1st came, I had to bust out the sweaters because it was so friggin cold

August 2005 was exactly the same, cold and wet.

still dont get the humid thing though...most of the time I feel completely dryed-out by the air here...suppose it's relative after moving inland from the seaside...

And 2004 or was it 2003?, was absolutely baking. You don't like the weather in Munich, wait till tomorrow!

It was the summer of 2003 that was a real scorcher throughout Europe. We (unwittingly) escaped the worst of it as we were on holiday in Sweden for most of August and the weather there was absolutely perfect, with temperatures around 30°-32°C. (Made me feel guilty, knowing how many people further south were dying because of the heatwave.)

shorts, t-shirts and flip-flops
Unless you want to drive.
T-shirts, tank tops, light skirts, bermudas.
AND
Long pants, socks, sweatshirts, raincoat.
Believe the weather forecast when it says it will get cooler, dress accordingly.

In comparison to how dry it is where Carm and I come from, Munich is quite humid. I'm used to it now but it used to really bother me. Now when I go back home my hair and skin dries up and I get nose bleeds all the time.

humidity is all relative. I don't think Munich is humid compared to where i'm from, but then again someone from Florida might not think where i'm from is humid.
my best friend stepped off the plane 2 weeks ago from Salt Lake City to Milwaukee and she said she felt it was super humid and i said hmm.. no, the humidity just went down because of the rain and that a few days before she got here it was worse.

It's warmer than England in summer and colder in winter. Since it's a year trip it's best to just pack general stuff to cover all eventualities (bearing in mind that you can buy more clothes in Munich if you need to). As an example of the variable weather we were told to expect freezing winters upon arrival however the 2006 / 2007 winter was pretty mild.

Cheers guys

That's a big help. I think I'll just bring summer clothes and one or two jumpers. Mum will be driving over on route to italy end of July so she can bring another suitcase full then

... also, I can buy when I get there (although I'm seriously concerned with some german fashion tastes, what's up with 5 colours at once?!)

You will need to prepare for winter a little I think. There are big department stores here to get normal / cheap clothes however the winters can be worse then England (consider as well that labled clothing such as north face fleeces or waterproofs are more expensive in Munich, at least from what I have seen, so it's worth bringing warm clothing from England). Whilst last winter was mild it still got down to sub freezing quite a few times during the winter months. Since it was a winter outside the norm it's possible you will see colder temps and more snow during the 2007 / 2008 winter. With extra clothing it's probably worth considering that at some point you will have to lug it home again (traipsing through Munich with more than a few bags isn't worth repeating more than once).
