Morning,

I'm new around here... well, been living in Hannover for 4 years, but just found this forum.

I'm reasonably integrated, despite my very ugly German, but more and more I feel the need to speak to some 'normal' people once in a while.

Well...er... 'Hello'

Anyone else into boats and sailing?

Hi folks

I hope it is ok if I just introduce myself here. I lived in the UK for the last 8 years and have come back to my home country last week Thursday. Hannover is still a long way from home which is Nuernberg. It seems that flying to London is faster than taking the train down there ...

I truly loved it in London and hope to be able to keep up the lingo, the fun, the humor, the laughter and the opportunity to continue to look at my own country through the eyes of someone on the outside and to continue to be exposed to "Anglo-Culture".

I am completely new to Hannover and it's bar/club/culture scene and hope that there are opportunities to meet people. I used to be in the German forum in London and it was a great way of meeting people and making friends. Hope I find something similar here. Looking forward to meeting English speakers here. Bye for now

Hi Marleynah,

Welcome to Hannover! I live in Osterwald, near to Hannover (accessed by public transport by a bus from Garbsen or Neustadt train station). I have a ten month old baby who keeps me pretty busy, but perhaps I could introduce you to some of my former students who are German who live in Hannover? (I used to teach English at Wall Street).

Hope you settle in and have fun.

Best,
Marcelle

Hi Marleynah,

there are at least three english speaking groups in Hannover - Hannover4EnglishSpeakersmeets in Henrys Griddle third Wednesday of the month 6.30pm I believe, Speakeasy - meets in the Paulaner on Thielenplatz, not sure when. And then there“s the Anglophiles who meet at KDW in Osterstr. on the second Wednesday in the month and again 15 days later.

Hi there ;-)

Welcome to Hannover, I will be moving here at the end of June to start a new life... I come from England but have been living the last years in Amsterdam. I have spent the last 2 years travelling back and forth from Amsterdam to Hannover. I fell in love with a german guy and as an English girl I am always on the look out for english speaking friends;-)) I know some nice places to hang where you can have a few drinks and there are certainly some nice places within the centre that I have fallen in love with... A lot of the places have been mentioned by someone else but if you like we can stay in touch and maybe go visit a couple when I have moved to Hannover ;-)

Don't worry I am not some weird women I just think its important to make friends and have a laugh and enjoy life :-)))

I my self will be needing to learn some German when I get there and I am really looking forward to the move...

Take care for now

Hello!

I also hope to be one of those fresh faces soon. I am an american transplanted here in germany almost 7 years, and over 6 of it in Munich. Will be leaving my beloved city, mountains and beer gardens, for a stint up "north" in Hannover.

Hope to attend events in July if they are not postponed due to school holidays.

One relievnig factor, I saw there are at least 3 quizzes in hannover (english), any feedback from others with english as a native tongue?
Thanks,
TeeJay
Hey guys, I'll introduce myself now rather than later because i won't have the net for abit .

Currently i live in Aust/Perth -, but am getting a VISA for a 12mth working holiday to Braunschweig (my hometown where i was born :D).

My names Torsten and i'm 20 yrs old and always wanted to go back to Germany to experiance a nice full long year while working there. For me i count myself lucky because i will have reletives where i will be staying so i can practice my german alot more - even though its not bad i still have a long way to go :).

I will be around the Wolfsburg, Braunshweig (Where im staying) and of course Hannover.

I have been a viewer of these boards for the past year and of course been posting abit here and there.

Is there any english speaking group who get together in Wolfsburg/Braunshweig (there prob will be). Just thought you guys might have maybe they got a website or something like that :).

Anyway, i'll keep people posted on when i will actually be in germany ^_^.

Cyaz!

Regards,
TJ

Hi fellow Hannoverians

I first arrived here on the 18th of March, 1985. I have just been away a lot.

Stupid question - is there still that Irish Pub near the Opera and does it still smell from the toilets downstairs?

For some reason no-one wants to fly to Hannover from Heathrow any more.

I cannot remember - is there a Weihnachtsmarkt, or is it poor?

I apologise for the questions sounding so random. It was a place I called home for a long time.

I don't know of an Irish pub near the opera -- the closest one I can think of would be the Celtic Tiger, but that's some ways away in Berliner Allee (and relatively new IIRC), or the Dublin Inn, which is next to the Marktkirche (and is also fairly newish), or MacGowan's, which is by Steintor.

(FWIW I've lived in Hannover since 1998 and before that I lived in Hildesheim for four years, but in those days I didn't visit Hannover terribly often.)

AFAIK you can still fly in and out of Gatwick or Stansted, but Hannover's airport has declined quite a bit in terms of passenger service -- they seem to be moving to freight as their big source of income.

Yes, there is a Weihnachtsmarkt -- actually several, but the main one is in the Altstadt, and I would say it's a pretty nice one.

Irish Pub near the Opera...You probably mean Finnegans Wake on Theaterstrasse. They closed just after the expo in 2001 or so.

Thanks to everyone for replying. I wish there'd been resources like this when I was living there. Finnegan's Wake does ring a bell. I remember the 1999 cricket World Cup final there - me, two German friends (to whom I was trying to explain the rules) - and a bunch of very disappointed Pakistanis. Glory days.

The things I adored about Hannover were the Eilenriede (I lived in Waldhausen, quite close to it), and the cycling into, and out of, town. The Maschsee was great for a sail in summer.

Is there a TT pub of preference in Hannover?

I guess I need a big pat on my back, as I have achieved a significant breakthrough in my Googling abilities...

imagine this, a single guy, on a 6 month deputation in Germany (Hannover to be precise), alone, and all these months, I couldn't find out on the net that there exists an entire community of English speaking people in this city itself... and to add to that, people who actually have information about how and where is Diwali going to be celebrated... now that deserves an applause...

I came here some 2 and a half months back... and have been working with a certain company... telecom software stuff... if I wud dwell into much detail, I might just get killed for it... and have been looking for people who are looking for people to communicate... ! I shall definitely make it to one of these meets, provided there is no qualification criteria... or is it ?

Hi there

After searching the internet high and low for English-speaking forums in Hannover, I'm pleased I've finally found that platform.

Maybe I'm speaking too soon and I'm not really welcome here because unfortunately I'm not a native speaker. However, I lived in Ireland (Dublin, more specifically) and New Zealand (everywhere, basically) and after being home for only two and a half months, I miss the people and the language terribly. Sooooooooooo, what I'm looking for is people in Hannover who share some of my many interests, eg Irish pubs, Irish music, Irish dancing, Ireland itself, Irish Gaelic, New Zealand, Maori, the All Blacks' haka (not too much rugby lingo, please) etc. After years of travelling I'd say I'm open-minded enough and always up for a good old chat BUT the problem is that my German friends here are inhibited to practise their English with foreigners over a pint of whatever so I personally find it difficult to get in touch with all you Irish, Northern Irish, Kiwi etc. people.

I miss Eire and I miss Aotearoa...

Oh, btw, I'm female, 28 years of age and if YOU feel you want to talk with somebody who could shed some light on some things German or if you're just on the lookout for pub pals, drop me a line.

Bye now

Jessica

Hi

I've been here a year and a half, but my German is still awful! I'd love to meet any other English speakers in the area.

Hi
I am from Canada. I have been living in Germany for almost 10 years but would like to meet English people and be able to speak my own language. I live outside Hannover, closer to Hildesheim.
