New in Hannover (or new to this forum)

Newcomer self-introductions
Bulli
Morning,

I'm new around here... well, been living in Hannover for 4 years, but just found this forum.

I'm reasonably integrated, despite my very ugly German, but more and more I feel the need to speak to some 'normal' people once in a while. smile.gif

Well...er... 'Hello'

Anyone else into boats and sailing?
Marleynah
Hi folks

I hope it is ok if I just introduce myself here. I lived in the UK for the last 8 years and have come back to my home country last week Thursday. Hannover is still a long way from home which is Nuernberg. It seems that flying to London is faster than taking the train down there ...

I truly loved it in London and hope to be able to keep up the lingo, the fun, the humor, the laughter and the opportunity to continue to look at my own country through the eyes of someone on the outside and to continue to be exposed to "Anglo-Culture".

I am completely new to Hannover and it's bar/club/culture scene and hope that there are opportunities to meet people. I used to be in the German forum in London and it was a great way of meeting people and making friends. Hope I find something similar here. Looking forward to meeting English speakers here. Bye for now
Marcelle
Hi Marleynah,

Welcome to Hannover! I live in Osterwald, near to Hannover (accessed by public transport by a bus from Garbsen or Neustadt train station). I have a ten month old baby who keeps me pretty busy, but perhaps I could introduce you to some of my former students who are German who live in Hannover? (I used to teach English at Wall Street).

Hope you settle in and have fun.

Best,
Marcelle

Hi Marleynah,

there are at least three english speaking groups in Hannover - Hannover for English Speakers - meets in Henrys Griddle last Tuesday of the month 6pm I believe, Speakeasy - meets in the Paulaner on Thielenplatz, not sure when. And then there´s the Anglophiles who meet at KDW in Osterstr. on the second Wednesday in the month and again 15 days later.

Hi there ;-)

Welcome to Hannover, I will be moving here at the end of June to start a new life... I come from England but have been living the last years in Amsterdam. I have spent the last 2 years travelling back and forth from Amsterdam to Hannover. I fell in love with a german guy and as an English girl I am always on the look out for english speaking friends;-)) I know some nice places to hang where you can have a few drinks and there are certainly some nice places within the centre that I have fallen in love with... A lot of the places have been mentioned by someone else but if you like we can stay in touch and maybe go visit a couple when I have moved to Hannover ;-)

Don't worry I am not some weird women I just think its important to make friends and have a laugh and enjoy life :-)))

I my self will be needing to learn some German when I get there and I am really looking forward to the move...

Take care for now

Hello!

I also hope to be one of those fresh faces soon. I am an american transplanted here in germany almost 7 years, and over 6 of it in Munich. Will be leaving my beloved city, mountains and beer gardens, for a stint up "north" in Hannover.

Hope to attend events in July if they are not postponed due to school holidays.

One relievnig factor, I saw there are at least 3 quizzes in hannover (english), any feedback from others with english as a native tongue?
Thanks,
delhinian
Hi,

My name's Neha and I'm from New Delhi (hence delhinian). Anyway just moved here a week ago on work and I expect to be here for the next 6 months. Unfortunately I don't speak any German which hasn't been too much of a disadvantage thus far but I'm considering taking classes to learn at least business German. Any suggestions on where I could go? Actually I have a rather long list of places I want to find out about. Yoga lessons in English, an English movie theatre, bookshops, nice lounge bars, live music (especially good ole blues) and anything any of you might think might capture the attention of a 24 year old in this city. Now I'm aware that some of you may have some preconcieved notions about what Indian women are like but I don't think I adhere to the stereotype. In fact in my city, I don't know anyone who does. Nonetheless if you have a passing interest in the evolving uber-culture back in my country then I am the person to contact. smile.gif

By the way, I'm a BIG foodie, any suggestions on restaurants? I feel like a steak today.

Cheers! And have a great weekend.

Hi,

I'm new to this forum, but have been in Hannover for a very long time, mainly Linden-, List- and Oststadt-based.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

they meet only once a month

If you're hungry to meet new people, you can always post up your own event. As the expression goes, "build it and they will come". For tips see: How to organise an event. You can then organise something to your taste, whether it's simply drinks at a pub, cinema outing, Indian restaraurant dinner, bowling, whatever.

Hey guys, I'll introduce myself now rather than later because i won't have the net for abit .

Currently i live in Aust/Perth -, but am getting a VISA for a 12mth working holiday to Braunschweig (my hometown where i was born :D).

My names Torsten and i'm 20 yrs old and always wanted to go back to Germany to experiance a nice full long year while working there. For me i count myself lucky because i will have reletives where i will be staying so i can practice my german alot more - even though its not bad i still have a long way to go :).

I will be around the Wolfsburg, Braunshweig (Where im staying) and of course Hannover.

I have been a viewer of these boards for the past year and of course been posting abit here and there.

Is there any english speaking group who get together in Wolfsburg/Braunshweig (there prob will be). Just thought you guys might have maybe they got a website or something like that :).

Anyway, i'll keep people posted on when i will actually be in germany ^_^.

Cyaz!

Regards,
TJ

Hi fellow Hannoverians

I first arrived here on the 18th of March, 1985. I have just been away a lot.

Stupid question - is there still that Irish Pub near the Opera and does it still smell from the toilets downstairs?

For some reason no-one wants to fly to Hannover from Heathrow any more.

I cannot remember - is there a Weihnachtsmarkt, or is it poor?

I apologise for the questions sounding so random. It was a place I called home for a long time.

I don't know of an Irish pub near the opera -- the closest one I can think of would be the Celtic Tiger, but that's some ways away in Berliner Allee (and relatively new IIRC), or the Dublin Inn, which is next to the Marktkirche (and is also fairly newish), or MacGowan's, which is by Steintor.

(FWIW I've lived in Hannover since 1998 and before that I lived in Hildesheim for four years, but in those days I didn't visit Hannover terribly often.)

AFAIK you can still fly in and out of Gatwick or Stansted, but Hannover's airport has declined quite a bit in terms of passenger service -- they seem to be moving to freight as their big source of income.

Yes, there is a Weihnachtsmarkt -- actually several, but the main one is in the Altstadt, and I would say it's a pretty nice one.

Irish Pub near the Opera...You probably mean Finnegans Wake on Theaterstrasse. They closed just after the expo in 2001 or so.
Ancient
Thanks to everyone for replying. I wish there'd been resources like this when I was living there. Finnegan's Wake does ring a bell. I remember the 1999 cricket World Cup final there - me, two German friends (to whom I was trying to explain the rules) - and a bunch of very disappointed Pakistanis. Glory days.

The things I adored about Hannover were the Eilenriede (I lived in Waldhausen, quite close to it), and the cycling into, and out of, town. The Maschsee was great for a sail in summer.

Is there a TT pub of preference in Hannover?

I guess I need a big pat on my back, as I have achieved a significant breakthrough in my Googling abilities...

imagine this, a single guy, on a 6 month deputation in Germany (Hannover to be precise), alone, and all these months, I couldn't find out on the net that there exists an entire community of English speaking people in this city itself... and to add to that, people who actually have information about how and where is Diwali going to be celebrated... now that deserves an applause... smile.gif

I came here some 2 and a half months back... and have been working with a certain company... telecom software stuff... if I wud dwell into much detail, I might just get killed for it... and have been looking for people who are looking for people to communicate... ! I shall definitely make it to one of these meets, provided there is no qualification criteria... or is it ?

Hi there

After searching the internet high and low for English-speaking forums in Hannover, I'm pleased I've finally found that platform.

Maybe I'm speaking too soon and I'm not really welcome here because unfortunately I'm not a native speaker. However, I lived in Ireland (Dublin, more specifically) and New Zealand (everywhere, basically) and after being home for only two and a half months, I miss the people and the language terribly. Sooooooooooo, what I'm looking for is people in Hannover who share some of my many interests, eg Irish pubs, Irish music, Irish dancing, Ireland itself, Irish Gaelic, New Zealand, Maori, the All Blacks' haka (not too much rugby lingo, please) etc. After years of travelling I'd say I'm open-minded enough and always up for a good old chat BUT the problem is that my German friends here are inhibited to practise their English with foreigners over a pint of whatever so I personally find it difficult to get in touch with all you Irish, Northern Irish, Kiwi etc. people.

I miss Eire and I miss Aotearoa...

Oh, btw, I'm female, 28 years of age and if YOU feel you want to talk with somebody who could shed some light on some things German or if you're just on the lookout for pub pals, drop me a line.

Bye now

Jessica

Hi

I've been here a year and a half, but my German is still awful! I'd love to meet any other English speakers in the area.

Hi
I am from Canada. I have been living in Germany for almost 10 years but would like to meet English people and be able to speak my own language. I live outside Hannover, closer to Hildesheim.
Fairfax71
Hi Dora,

The next Hannover4EnglishSpeakers meeting is this Wednesday, starting at 6:30 pm at Henry's Griddle (Georgstraße, near the opera). It's OK to be late, too. wink.gif

We have people showing up from Peine and Elze and whatnot, so if you're between Hannover and Hildesheim, you've even closer than some. biggrin.gif

Cheers,

Hello everyone on here

as I have been lurking around for a while now I thought I finally register.
Fair enough Im not a native speaker...well not english anyway...but Im married to a Brit ohmy.gif)
I would say my english is fluent enough to read and write and even speak...but its not as if you would hear me speak in this forum...lol

but let me tell u a bit about us
Im 27 and german my hubby is 32 and english. He is originally from London and used to be in the army. Thats how we met 10 years ago...

we have 3 daughters aged 4, 5 and 6...one of the reasons why I registered here as I would love to meet other families who speak english at home and maybe find some lil friends for our kids.

we live just outside from Hannover...a place called Isernhagen.
We got told in the Sparkasse sometime that there would be quite a few Brits in and around this area but we have never met any sad.gif
The main reason why I got registered on here really is for my hubby though as I think he would love to get in contact with some other native speakers. I can see his face lit up every time we are out and he hears his mothertongue spoken somewhere...but its not as if a grown man would just walk up to someone and just chats him up...would look kinda weird , dont u think.

Anyway, I have already seen that there is some anglican church group held somewhere...Im not religious but I think the hubby would like to go to his church again sometime.

So thats enough for now...I hope we can get to know some nice people here ...

if u have any questions just ask

Hello there!

Am not new to Hannover as have been living here since 99 but am brand-new to this forum. Currently living in the Oststadt at the foot of the Lister Meile. Am a new mummy with a baby boy who is now 2 months old and am happy to meet other english-speaking people in the area who want to speak gaga and have pram races. Couldn't quite decipher if the H4ES had organised some kind of group or not.

Well. here I am...

Caroline
Fairfax71
Hi Caroline,

Yes, H4ES is now having bimonthly children's and family meetings in addition to the regular meetings. Dates and times are on the website and calendar.

BTW the "regular meetings" aren't necessarily adults-only. A couple times people have brought along their kids, and they're perfectly welcome. (Thought about bringing ours a couple times.) The kids/family meetings are more focused on the kids themselves, meaning they'll enjoy themselves rather more...

Hope to see you there!

Cheers,

John

Hi to everyone in Niedersachsen,

Although this thread is for the Hannover area, I am new to this forum smile.gif

I've been living in Bad Gandersheim (about midway between Hildesheim and Northeim) for almost 8 months now, originally from Kent in England. Learning German (slowly!) since week 1 of my stay.

Don't know what the English speaking crowd is like here, although the local E-Centre did an "English Breakfast" a few months ago, and the city apparently has an Englishwoman on the council. smile.gif
